Yeh he's retreating from the hands-off Dengist policies of his two predecessors and instead beating the drum of aggression in the South China Sea, also censorship and attempts to exclude Western media from China have gotten tighter.

Xi recognizes that China is on the cusp of becoming a second global superpower, and must project a stronger presence in the world by undermining American policies and beachheads. They're doing this both militaristically, by exploiting weaknesses of global governance systems and diplomacy (ex. South China Sea issue & Taiwan's independence issue), and also economically, by providing financial incentives for foreign nations to trade, if not rely on Chinese economic entrenchment (ex. One Belt One Road & ongoing Chinese colonization of Africa).

All the while he pays lip service to free trade and anti-protectionism, knowing that China's current dictatorial model can work well in that system while still protecting its own interests and a desirable exchange rate pegged to the US dollar to keep their exports high. Whereas, America only stands to lose with the current economic order and momentum. And so China stays in favour with the powerful economic interests of the world (ex. IMF, World Bank, major investing organizations, whomever you believe runs the world).

China is already unparalleled in manufacturing and in real estate and construction, and it is starting to move into IP and global consumer brands, along with the visual arts and architecture (ex. MAD architects). They're also buying out large chunks of american, anglo, and european companies.

I think he's a capable leader who wants the best for his country. We could use someone like him here.
