I never understood why Frida Kahlo was so acclaimed despite being Diego Rivera's lover. Like if she was a literally who that would be one thing but she was literally getting fucked by the cock of genius and the best she could turn out was DUDE I'M A DEAR LMAO

There are definitely better painters in Mexico. Better women painting who have not been belatedly re-discovered as "feminist" icons (the main reason she is popular) by people who actually knew nothing about her or about Mexican art history (most notably Madonna, that tower of contemporary intellect who believes that counting words in the Bible tells you the future, among other cooky superstitions). I'll mention, as contemporaries to Kahlo, María Izquierdo, Nahui Ollin (Carmen Mondragón), Aurora Reyes and Elena Huerta.
She was absolutely dominated by Rivera, who was unfaithful, who frequently humiliated and beat her. She was a victim who hid all her suffering in order to aggrandize the man she loved (a great painter, a committed political activist, a terrible human being). And, at the same time, as soon as she had a chance to be unfaithful, she was, especially after finding Rivera in bed with her younger sister, Cristina.
Kahlo is much less than what foreigners have made of her.
And Mexicans aren't usually that proud of Frida, she is mainly bigger outside of Mexico; here, people are far more proud of Diego Rivera, which in turn isn't that well know outside of Mexico.
