Alright Sup Forums, first time poster here, I love creature features and lately my collection has been hungering for more. Could someone tell me some recommendations for creature focused movies. I watch them for the creature design, effects and to a lesser point, story. I don't turn my head at the usual escaped lab experiment on killing spree plot, as long as the creature is unique and interesting. Also has anybody seen the new movie "The Monster? How was it? Do you think it would satisfy my thirst? Movies I have seen that are related (no specific order)
>arachnid >tremors franchise >Spiders & spiders 2: Breeding Ground (2000-2001) >The Thing and The Thing prequel >Deep Star Six >Leviathan >Alien franchise >Monsters and Monsters 2:Dark Continent >The Relic > Eight Legged freaks > Deep Blue sea >Jaws >Peter Benchleys Creature >Peter Benchleys The Beast >Octopus & Octopus 2 >Deep Rising >Harbinger Down >Europa Report >Cell Count (disappointing) > Mimic franchise >Cloverfield
Tvs: >Alien Planet >The Future is wild >"Walking with" series >Surface
Any recs for things of this nature would be appreciated. Also I've seen so much more than this list, this is just a general of seen/own.
I love those movies and have seen hundreds myself, but there's nothing I would recommend, really
a bit off-tangent, how about Jeepers Creepers? not a creature feature per se, but the design was somewhat unique and definitely cool
William Thomas
Stranger Things, definitely
Hudson Stewart
Also subtitles are not necessarily a turn-off as I loved the Korean monster mover "The Host". What is a turn off is if the creature is too humanoid, aliens gets a pass on this, that is why I didn't include the Predators.
Sebastian Butler
Jeepers 1 falls under "too humanoid" but Jeepers 2 edged more into creature "territory".
Ayden Allen
Some more to the list:
>Feast (alright) >Feast 2 (strayed into silly) >Feast 3 (full pant-on-head retarded, I ended up trading it the day I bought it.)
Jaxson Rodriguez
As you can tell Marine creatures are a favorite so anything under water is a plus.
Henry Barnes
I won't let this get pushed down by allthe capeshit discussions. BUMP
Pic source: Harbinger Down
Noah Barnes
Judas breed from Mimic 1 bump.
Colton Gutierrez
Creature from Deep Rising bump, seeing as nobody seems interested I'm probably going to just let the thread sink and die.
Grayson Roberts
Alien spider from "Arachnid", kind of cheesy but awesome if you like animatronics/practical effects.
This is Last bump of the Creature feature fetish, signing off.
Jose Sullivan
Feast 1 is god-tier horror movie. 2 and 3 are meh.
In regards to OP's question, though, I don't think the designs were any good/standout
John King
I'm sorry your thread died user, i looked at your list and you've seen eerything that jumps to mind to recommend you :/
if it makes you feel any better i love this kind of shit too so your list at least gave me some recommendations
Ryder Nguyen
My nigga, an actual horror thread. You've probably seen most of these already but just in case:
More character driven but I'd recommend anyway: >The Host 2006 >Super 8 >Spring 2014
Jordan Brown
Kind of cheesy, it's definitely sci-fi channel tier but check out abominable if you want a comfy creature flick plus a great ending
Jack Gonzalez
Am I the only one who thought The Monster was kind of boring? Maybe it's because I've watched too many monster movies, but I was not feeling the suspense at all. Also, the frequent flashbacks felt contrived and were therefore not effective at establishing the two main characters. We already know their relationship is strained and that the mother is irresponsible from the opening scene.
Charles Edwards
I have similar taste to you user! 'The Monster' is okay, but if the creature itself is your focus you might be disappointed. It mainly exists in shadow, which is fortunate because it is used skilfully but is not itself visually appealing and it does not interact believably with the environment IMO.
Can I ask what Leviathan is like?
Nicholas Perez
This.
Ian Adams
Leviathan is a movie about a drill team underwater that finds a sunken USSR sub that contained a safe with vodka in it, they brink it unknowing it contained a mutagenic compound that horribly disfigured and mutates the into what is essentially a large body jhortor angler fish.
I've got to go but if this is still up in a few hours i'll post more, in the meantime a mural of the creatures from "monsters". You do see them in the movie but it's always dark to showcase their beautiful bio-lumonecents.
Benjamin White
>Am I the only one who thought The Monster was kind of boring? No you're not. The forced drama was really annoying.
I was on LSD when I watched it but it made me extremely sad and I thought the acting was fantastic. The drama didn't feel forced because the relationship seemed to be the central idea of the movie, not the threat of the monster. If it was a simple "monster stalks and kills a group of people" movie with a dysfunctional mother/daughter relationship thrown in for sympathetic effect then it would have come off as cliche and forced but it felt much more personal than that to me.
Either way the answer is no, OP. The Monster has a pretty weak monster and you barely see any of it.
Mason Gutierrez
You would probably like Troll Hunter
Anthony Wilson
Pumpkinhead is a cool one. Little Shop of Horrors is fun, although it is a musical/comedy. The Fly remake if that counts since its a slow transformation.
Godzilla franchise Animal The Angry Red Planet The Giant Claw Attack the Block CHUD Ginger Snaps (great movies but monster effects aren't that great) Dog Soldiers The Host
Joshua Lee
The giant claw is one of the biggest pieces of shit i have ever seen.
