Just a reminder that:
A. The average person doesn't actually care about human rights or freedom. They might care about being nice and reasonable, and being able to live a good life, and those might manifest in caring about human rights and freedom, but these concepts are not guaranteed to have massive support.
B. Most people can absolutely be chanced and molded into something different, and even the most docile people can be pushed into committing human rights violations.
C. Also the average person probably doesn't even have the brain power, or more likely knowledge and time to navigate our media and form informed and nuanced opinions. Everyone falls for some brand of bias, I certainly do.
D. Even if literacy rates are high on the West, high comprehension of what is being read and actual reading is probably not as much.
E. The average person doesn't care about facts when forming their opinions. They make nearly all decisions based on feelings and then only bring in facts to justify their believes afterwards. I think everyone does this at least a little though, I certainly do.
F. The good don't always win, and the best ideas don't always rise to the top. If you think propaganda has a lot of power, chances are it still has even more power than you think it does.
G. There are no easy solutions to the problems that the West has.
H. Totalitarianism can creep its head anywhere.
