It's a hamfisted attempt at mocking the audience, something that would have never occurred in the original series, which is why it was so jarring. The film was through the looking glass of fan reaction and that is why it doesn't feel "right". The creator, consciously or not, is irrevocably influenced by the reception of his original work and thusly, the lightning in the bottle he captured with the original series could never be replicated.

Funnily enough I already knew that user
The thing about the original PCD was that Nicole was a total cunt who saw it as "her" band and was intensely jealous of the other girls because they were better dancers/singers than her. So she knocked out Carmit first (better dancer), then Jessica and Kimblerly (also better dancers), then Melody (by far the best singer), and lastly Ashley just because she was the only one left.
