This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
How much of a difference is it, between Japanese literature (intellectual stuff, or even, bureaucratic media) as opposed to more vulgar/common expressions perhaps found in mass media and in maybe most verbal conversations between regular people?
What I have learned in life, is that, it is important to make a distinction between "making a point" and "explaining something", because it allows me to make a conscious effort in soliciting some other party, for providing to me a more sincere statement after they initially expressed something that I thought sounded vague, or sounded meaningless. Making a point about something is a good way to express yourself with a brief statement, and such brief statements will typically be held against you because of that, and such brief statements tend to be spoken verbally because of how much more easier it is to create an argument that way. However, in order to try convey a meaning of something to other people, or to convey the meaning around the context for various ideas you want to convey to other people, you will want to work hard to try clarify, but also maintain a sense of complexity when you talk/write. How do people clarify and specify delicate problems in Japanese, while trying to be as specific as they can be?
This third paragraph here just above, is an example of me having to taking the time to carefully write down (and re-write) a set of clear and meaningful sentences in English. I would probably not have ended up writing that third paragraph that way, had I been limited to having to speak in front of an audience without a script.
I am now reminded of how one best is to be both direct and specific when writing/talking, which should make it more interesting to read something written in English (and probably other languages as well).
