I recall it made us a "real" country.

The birth of the devil

Canada burnt down the white house because you tried to annex them or tried to pull some evil shit you guys always do, dunno, don't care.
Breddy based

anglos vs anglos

>because you tried to annex them or tried to pull some evil shit you guys always do, dunno, don't care.
We burned their capital first and it was a British squadron from Bermuda that burned the White House (Canada's units had basically collapsed at that point). We got pissed that the Brits kept kidnapping our sailors and violating our sovereignty (they basically kidnapped some of their deserters from U.S. soil.) The result was basically that our Northern border was set.

That Canada lost

>Canada burnt down the white house because you tried to annex them

It was British regulars brought over from Europe during the Hundred Days when Napoleon was exiled on Elba.

Didn't even know it was a thing until like a month ago

Napoleon got kicked out.

Absolutely fucking nothing was learned about it as school since other important stuff was happening in Europe at the same time

more like we were confident that the British were too busy with the continent and wouldn't care enough about Canada to try and annex it

Basically pointless
the only people who won were the Canadians
Injuns lost

>kidnapping our sailors and forcing them at gunpoint into the Royal Navy

Basically nothing, besides Canadians and Americans ranting about it whenever it's mentioned (and I still don't get who "won" or who burned what down), since the rest of the world was busy with more important matters ATT

Lemme summarize it for you.

>Perfidious Albion are seizing our ships and forcing the crew members into the Royal Navy
>they're also preventing us from trading with France although we're neutral in the war and should be allowed to trade with anyone we want
>eventually Parliament decides to stop impressment of sailors
>however, James Madison declares war on Britain before the news can cross the Atlantic
>a bunch of battles happen
>we slap around the Royal Navy, handing them their only defeats between the War of the Spanish Succession and WWI (that's 200 years, folks)
>the Bongs invade the US and get halted
>but we also get halted invading Canada
>the fighting on land becomes a stalemate, meanwhile the Royal Navy blockades the US and bottles up our navy
>while Napoleon is on Elba, they use the downtime to invade the Chesapeake area and burn Washington DC
>another British force lands at New Orleans, but Andrew Jackson stuffs their shit
>peace is worked out whereby the Canadian border is demilitarized and Britain gives up the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, which turns out to be full of iron ore deposits

As a result of the war, the US began to develop a more distinct cultural identity and move away from British cultural influences. US and Canadian nationalism were pretty much also birthed by the war. The European states at last accepted the US as a legitimate power instead of a bunch of renegade colonies.

That's pretty much everything. :^)

Well that's interesting, thanks for explaining. I guess it was fairly important.

>more like we were confident that the British were too busy with the continent and wouldn't care enough about Canada to try and annex it
That's a minority view. The reality is we weren't that prepared for it. Also, I forgot but their blockade was fucking our trade with France which hurt our economy.

>The reality is we weren't that prepared for it
Definitely not. The US had almost 4 million men of military age in 1812 but somehow it was never possible to get more than 7000 of them onto the field of battle. Volunteer troops and militia fought terribly and often deserted when a battle started, although the small US regular army performed well.

Although a lot has been made out of the poor performance of the US war effort (on land at least), the war did produce a number of military heroes including three future presidents.

LOL is this what they actually teach Yanks at school? Fuck me

What's wrong with it?

We wuz gud boys we dindonuffin das all fake Murrifat propaganda.
