> My country
New Zealand

> My Homeland

"This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England."

Easy for a WASP like Roosevelt to talk about simply being Americans when he had his own kind in mind.

Now with a thousand other hyphenations all beneath the stars and stripes it's much harder to see any sort of cohesiveness today.

There is no cohesiveness at all. Everybody is a hyphenated American. The hierarchy is; what 'race' you are, then 'what' you are.
That's just human nature to have the need to belong to a tribe.
