Grammar, syntax, semantic word choice are almost identical. However, in terms of vocabulary Ukrainian is massively different from Russian. Because much of the vocabulary of Ukrainian consists of either words not attested in the Old Russian / Church Slavonic canon or corruptions thereof, Russians feel that Ukrainian is a made up language assembled from nonsense words for the sake of being different from Russian.

russians do differ from each other ethnically, Ivan. anyone who travelled to different parts of russia knows that. that type of russians you described (baltoslavic, finnic etc) are no more than 40% of the whole russian population (maybe even less than that) and they (we) are almost exclusively living in the north-west of this country. majority of ukrainians are literally the same as russians from the southern russia (and they too are about 30-40% of russia's population). so on average we are not that different

No, they didn't. Cuban crisis showed that at least at some point we were almost equally powerful with the Americans. And stuff like invasion of czechoslovakia also proved that we could easily get away with invading a country that is almost in the centre of europe. Everything went to shit during the afghan war.
