Trades Thread

Are trades some of the few remaining redpilled careers? Everywhere I look, I just see SJW influence. I've been in college for 2 years now as a CS major and have been getting fed up. I thought once I got past school it would be fine, but even at my internship now (with a very large company), I get pestered with "diversity and tolerance" training. I really don't give a shit about money.

To all tradesmen out there, should I make the switch? I'm thinking about becoming an electrician.

An electrician who can program?
Hot damn what a fucking combination.
God of electronics.

Yeah, like thats Ever going to go obsolete

(emperor sidious voiceover)
DO IT

If you can write code, then look at a career in HVAC controls. If you can get on with Trane, Johnson controls, etc. you may have a decent life.

Literal oxymoron and you're a moron.

Electricians can make bank, especially after you get your journeymans license. Plus, you can always make money on the side helping friends and aquantences install various shit even after you retire. Plus, there is an abundance of jobs and you can relocate anywhere and still have job security. Definitely a great trade.

As far as diversity training goes, you're always going to see that in large companies now. You can't escape it no matter what your position within that company.

I'm going to college for chemical process technology and even the Intro to Process Tech book had a chapter dedicated to diversity in the workplace and the tolerance aspect associated. I worked for Dow Chemical and we had several diversity meetings. Maybe once every 2 years or so.

Fortunately, with my degree plan I can get a double associates degree; Instrumentation and Electrical degree right along with the PTAC. It's only a few more credits. So yea, I'm definitely doing that.

>tl;dr: Electrical trade is a great choice

>Maybe once every 2 years or so.

Forgot to add this was after the first 2 years. That first 2 years was action packed with diversity and tolerance training.

Can confirm electrical is top tier.
The trades are filled with idiots to put it bluntly. Even showing up on time and a willingness to learn will put you miles above other tradesmen. Put good work in and you will be rewarded.

I don't really want to influence your life too much, but my father is an electrician. He doesn't even have a degree and makes about $24/hr take home, for a rural area that's alot. We live middle to upper middle class. He's as redpilled as most of us and takes a lot of pride in his life earnings. Good luck OP!

good luck getting a union apprenticeship without knowing somebody.

Shits all mobbed up

What other trades are good?

Oh, and once you get your masters, go and start your own company. My grandfather bills $100 an hour and the people I've talked to say he's on the cheaper side.

>inb4 welder shitposting

give it a shot. starting out you'll be doing all the shit work no one else wants to do and work your way up eventually. but goddamn does it feel good to do physical labor and see what you made with your own hands everday. i feel sorry for the faggots that sit in cubicles all day. so fucking depressing that must be

Plumbing, HVAC, rare chance you can find elevator mechanic, and welding.

Dildo repair.

>with a very large company

Fuck off neet

trades are ok for money but they tend to destroy your body and turn you into a fat raging alcoholic

Power lineman, wireman, and power control dispatch pay really well

Its too late for me, im dead

Otherwise id be making a giant list of Trades to get into, researching how to get into them, and would be doing that.

But im dead, not long to live.

And yes HVAC has a giant vacuum in it, those people are bargained over to hire them. National relocation is a thing with that.

It does take awhile to get certified for it though I think.

carpet installer

Isn't sitting on your ass 8 hours a day also bad for you?

I would really like to get into trade but I'm colorblind. Does that limit my options at all? Also how long does it take to start making decent pay as a welder or something in a similar field?

Trade is indeed great as plumbers, electricians, specialized mechanicians and etc... will always be needed. Can't outsource the jobs, can't replace with robots, everybody needs plumbing, electricity and etc...

I'm a cable guy, which is not really a trade, yet I make 30$/h just for driving around town replacing modems and whatnot

>66
I should have gone electrician in stead of red seal carpentry.

Let that sink in.

>Electrician
>God of Electronics
you know electricians only handle high voltage circuits right?

Taking a one yr part time carpentry course starting september only because my dads in the industry and im tired of working shit ass minimum wage jobs now that im almost 21

and that doesnt happen to white collar workers?

now thats a shitty trade to get into
pretty labor intensive

and you have to deal with those chemical smells that come off the carpet and adhesives

will always be work in it, but its the kind of job that will destroy you eventually

Union Ironworker 2bh

You can't make money doing anything honorable, the Jews have made sure of that. Play their Jew game or live in a small home and retire poor.

My mom is a dog groomer. Gonna get into that.

Union carpenter or welder and get as many certifications as possible.

Train driver and go on strike. Never work a day and get payed, thats what the fuckers do here at least.

Going on strike is awesome

Become a welder, if you're good you'll be paid very well. Here in Canada rig welders make 110/hr. You can work for 6 months and take the rest of the year off to browse pol and complain about the jews

>What is self control

This is an unfair generalization. Usually the fat worn out alcoholics are the ones that eat McDonalds every day for lunch, are in debt because they buy the newest ruck every tax return, and have aa shit marriage or are divorced because of the other two. At least, that's the trend I've noticed in my years.

There are plenty of tradesmen that have their head screwed on right and come out quite well.

Bong here....my dad's been a electrician (sparks as they are called) for 27 years. Guys one of the best and works for a major company in London.

After I moved to the states I find out that he recently just brought a second house, renovated his kitchen and built a home gym in his garden.

So yeah....it's legit.

Just wish I didn't choose the IT path.

>
>>Electrician
>>God of Electronics
>you know electricians only handle high voltage circuits right?
Here in the U.S. high voltage is typically considered anything over 480VAC. Low voltage is anything under 480VAC. There are high voltage and low voltage electricians.

I've worked in a trade or managed tradesmen since 1996. While you can certainly make good money as an electrician, they are not in as high demand as some other trades. Pipefitting, Millwrights, Instrument Tech with PLC experience, and Power Plant Techs are in very high demand. Commercial HVAC is in high demand too, residential seems to pay less unless you work for yourself.

I work in a power plant and have had operator jobs open and go infilled for over two years because we can't find qualified people.

Most of the tradesmen I work with are redpilled and hate all the political correct, SJW bullshit. If you work for a large company you will have to deal with it whether your a desk jockey or wrench turner.

If you want to become an Electrician, before becoming an apprentice, look into College programs that focus on electrical technologies. IBEW will often times count hours of school as hours of apprenticeship.

Find a program in a field that interests you and LEARN CAD AND TO FUCKING WRITE CODE. Knowing CAD and how to code in certain languages will make you a fucking GOD in the trade.

Do your own research constantly, buy text books etc. Don't be afraid to get apprenticeship hours in different outfits, working in different environments/jobs. The experience is invaluable and will put you head and shoulders above everyone else.

Consider starting your own contracting business after you learn the ins and outs. I know guys you get paid $500-1000 just to show up and look at something like induction welders, transformers, automated systems, PLC, etc. Then they charge the company $300 for a $50 part.

You can make A LOT of money in the trade (100k+, double/triple that if you have a successful contracting business), but you need skills, experience, and a strong work ethic.

Or just your 9-5 average journey man for 80k a year.

Good luck.

>tradie
>Not being the bottom feeder of society

Become cable puller. Become Installer. Become ICT Technician. Profit. It's hard work, but it's honest work, combine that with some Wifi certs and some network admin certs, you are hard body IT God. Me tell you.

thats true. i just always liked the idea of the less stressful trades like painting/drywalling/carpeting. less shit to worry about. yeah the labors hard and money might not be as good as mechanical trades but less shit to worry about/kill you

Is this true?

tradies get ladies

I literally called the union HQ and asked about apprenticeship openings. I had a job a week later as an apprentice. I had absolutely zero experience in the electrical field.

Louisville, KY if it makes a difference.

Painters = Drunks
Drywall/Carpet = Trabajo Amigo!

My local is based out of Trenton and have a test and board interview for apprenticeships. If you don't know somebody, the chances of scoring high enough are slim to none.

Living in the Philly area sucks, so much nepotism and mob shit.

I worked as a painted a while ago. Painting untold square kilometers of walls got to me because the pay wasn' t that good and everyone can do it so competition is fierce.

I make 60 an hr.

T. Electrical foreman in commiefornia

I've been electrician for years, it's dangerous but if your not a fuckboii you won't get hurt. Don't do residential that's for Mexicans, get into industrial power.

Electrical is a huge trade, and you cant get outsourced. If your smart, learn some coding, and get a bit lucky you can get into automation and be that asshole replacing workers with machines.

>your not a fuckboii
>your not
>your

It's "you're" you illiterate fuck. I doubt you even have that job.

Fuccboi confirmed.

Do I need to go to trade school to be competitive for a union electrician apprentice position? How much will my 2 years of college as a CS major count for?

Framers= guys that drink and drug it up until 2 am on work nights and then work 12 hour days like its nothing

Without fucking fail. I don't get it

Ya it's easier to find a job with a trade then a worthless degree I'm a welder for a construction company don't weld all the time but that skill got me the job

Yu don't leik how I speel jewboii?

>nitpicking grammar on a site famous for degeneracy, neets, and transsexual desires

Fort McMurray alberta tradesman here. 2nd year Heavy equipment technician at one of the top oil sands companies, pays 45$ an hour. Fix forklifts, gen sets, compressors, various support equipment. Life is good.

School? Not necessary but can help you get a foot In the door, depends on the area you're in I guess.

>tfw just got into local IBEW apprenticeship 2 months ago
feels good

ICT Technician again OP,

>Best bud works in coding
>Company is almost exclusively women, bronies and literal faggots
>be me
>Company 95% Alpha redpilled veterans who got into communications/ electrical work in the military

Learn to work with your hands, you'll probably hate it for years but eventually it will fulfill you.

i'm in a major metro area. Lots and lots of construction going on, so I'd assume they're hiring a lot. how long would you say it usually takes from your time of application to your first day on the job? college starts back up in 2 months, i'd love to have something else nailed down by then.

>CS major
>electrician

NO. Get into the manufacturing/machining industry. The current talent pool is ankle deep, and the job is safe and at worst the physical requirements are some standing and light lifting.

I'm a CMM programmer for a medium sized job shop. i basically sit in an air conditioned room by myself playing with a kawaii robot. i make 60$ an hour and can pretty much hold my shop hostage because nobody else can do it.

see

Chef

haha yeah i already knew that a lot of house painters were drunks/spics but always had a deep respect for some reason

I'm not jewish.

However, this guy is:

Learn to weld pipe, you will never be out of work and if you're willing to travel you will make a ton of money.

>i basically sit in an air conditioned room by myself

I also do that now with my internship and am making >$30/hr. I just don't want to be sitting down and don't give a shit about money.

Good job young user. You're doing the right thing. Don't be a slacker.

>tfw surgery on hip and knee because arthritis
>tfw can't stand for too long
>too dumb for school
>26

what trade?

ITS Technician Again, This dude is right.

Buddy is a steamfitter, makes retarded money.

>I buy bass boat
>he buy cigarette boat
>I buy remington 700
>he buy .338 lapua

Fucking Nursaltan tuyakby

kys

trade your car for a motorized wheelchair

tfw I scored well, but didn't get in, much to the surprise of every electrician I know.

For me a lot of talk about jobs sounds like fantasy land. I'm not saying you're giving bad advice but it's not something I can understand. Like
>Get into the manufacturing/machining industry
What does this even mean? Where do I start? I feel like there's so little information available about jobs.
Not OP but I'm a programmer with an unfinished degree.

Shitposting 4 cash
It's your only hope

Gave it to a nigger

Just pick a trade you actually enjoy and you'll be fine mate.
Electrician makes a shit load of money but a lot of the boys I know don't really enjoy it.
Personally I done my apprenticeship as an aircraft technician and loving it but jobs are scarce as Fuck.
I'm on 87k and don't really have any expenses but it's not a trade where I can open my own business like a sparky or plumber could.

Maybe decide what your after, and look into marine tech if you're after some travel and don't mind shit conditions in exchange for a massive payday.

I don't know about being redpilled though. Most tradies just want money and if given the choice would be doing coke in a business suit off a hookers ass. But it's definitely better having a job where you know something actually useful in life rather than just pushing papers for no rhyme or reason.

Commercial HVAC is where it's at.

My buddy had a lot of shit jobs until he got a good job at an industrial site. Paid 65k.

A year later he got an offer from another industrial site for 100k.

He's 28. Trained in automation and HVAC repair.

This is by far the truth. CNC machinist and programmer. Stress can be a bitch at times.

I'm 22, and wish I had started an electrical trade when I was 18 instead of dicking around at uni and such.
Its good, honest, skilled work.
My dad has been one his entire life and is an absolute master. He is one of those guys who if he does a job, he does it to 110% perfection. Too bad he was fairly incapable as a father and gave me no guidance.

I could still go do a trade now, but it means I'd have to give up my good job currently that pays well, in order to earn less than a pizza boy for 4 or so years..I wish someone had told me how important the decisions you make right out of school are.

>Most tradies just want money and if given the choice would be doing coke in a business suit off a hookers ass.

>Implying a tradie cant do this on the weekends

then just be a machinist and drive a 5 axis. all this stuff is ran with computer code and ladder logic, or better yet, get into service.

the opportunities to apply your CS skills are better in the machining industry than they are as an electrician. i'm assuming computers is your jam still, you just want to get away from office bullshit.

Ah we do. Just sucks working Saturday's most of the time

I'm just saying suities make money an easy way for a useless job. Most tradies are just in it for cash and because of necessity and would rather a suitie life. That's why I'm saying pick a trade you actually enjoy doing.

dude find any local machine shop. most are willing to train.

Trades are becoming a fucking meme, they have many good aspects and it's nice to see that more people are wising up to the college industry but people need to tone down the hype.

Everyone here also needs to distinguish between residential and commercial/industrial tradesmen. You're going to get a different experience and pay. I know carpenters that don't do anything but commercial now, they don't touch residential even though they have people calling them because it's such a pain in the ass. If you work a residential trade then you won't be doing what you love most of the time, you will be doing sales. You are constantly selling yourself and your company and you sink or swim on your ability to create a network of customers, sort of like a car salesman.

Any company that says "We can't find anyone to hire" is in that position because they don't want to train anyone and they want a fully qualified worker to plug right in. Usually they're paying the industry standard when the only way they're getting a proper hire is if one that's already making the industry standard relocates from another place and another company, so no kidding they can't find anyone. I know companies that have complained about shortages for 5+ years. They have openings for a reason.

And for all the US veterans here the GI Bill fucks you if you go for a trade instead of college regarding your stipend.

>less stressful trades like painting/drywalling/carpeting

that sucks man.
I assume you're talking about the aptitude test that you scored well on?

>are trades blah blah

Yeah if you literally have nothing else going for you

90% of the people in this thread are pseudo-reactionary SJW-contrarians who read TheArtOfManliness and think being a welder is le manliest thing evarr XDD

Don't EVER bother with construction unless you're Union. "My grandpa makes 4000$/hour electrican hurr durrr prrpr" yeah anyone who owns their own fucking business/company is going to be raking in dough you don't have to become an electrician for that.

Electricians are all fat fucking slobs too, anyways so you'd probably fit in.

You're such a fucking negative nancy.

Well, they don't tell you what you score on the aptitude test, but the also score you on the interview with the JATC/IBEW board.

I would assume I did well on the aptitude test, because you have to pass it to even get to the interview stage. It's just a real downer, because I'm already 30, and have been doing industrial maintenance for a while, but don't have any certifications, so this would have been a really good opportunity for me to do well for myself.

Nice field, it would be a good alternative to college if it wasn't going to be completely automated in 5 years

This guy knows. Don't fall for that Dirty Jobs SWEAT bullshit or that ArtofLemanlineessECttt faggotry

>"dude be a carpenter work with your hands create lmao xDDD"
yeah that's not how it works. in real trades you have to WORK, because it's a JOB.

>ur such a negative nancy ;pppp

See, you wouldn't last 5 minutes in a trade you big pussy

I feel for you user. I said that because 90% of the time I only have to work 5 days a week

Do you have to do a lot of geometry math? What kind of skills does the job use?

It's funny because I didn't know what a machine shop is until I googled it just now. I'm pretty sure they would expect me to have more than 0 experience, but I might check it out after more research.

first year electrical apprentice

pro tip for anyone who wants to join, dont talk about voting for trump.

can someone answer this?

Sparky here.
It has been the best thing I've ever done to get a trade. Electricity is not for every one. Colorblind people especially.
Ibew is the way to go.
Ironworkers are badass bros. Steamfitters are also. The thing with trades really in my experience is that you need to be in it for the long haul. You can't approach a trade like a retail job and expect your skills to evolve the way they need to in order for you to become a badass at your trade. You must possess the constitution to work hard and rise early every fucking day.

ah gotcha. IIRC I think they sent a letter with my aptitude test scores to my house, but I could be wrong. Hope it works out for you in the future though man

this lmao.
