What happened?

What happened?

The wind blew

Nothing. Nothing at all. Move on.

modernity, business, and improvements in communications

You could say that it's all Anglo oppression but this distribution and time frame are very similar to Pennsylvania German in the US

Wouldn't have even thought there were that many in 1900

>europe comes into contact with traditional soyfoods of east asia around 1800

they collectively decided to become jolly good chaps, what what

Finally, a quality thread.

Nothing. Move along.

Britain being tolerant

All the REAL Irish moved to America, only the Anglocucks stayed behind.

Obviously great hunger like the pic says

Because a majority of Celts moved elsewhere, either to British colonies, England, or the USA. Modern Irishmen are a significant portion British, if Irish at all.

>Because a majority of Celts moved elsewhere, either to British colonies, England, or the USA. Modern Irishmen are a significant portion British, if Irish at all.

At least people still speak it, unlike Cornish which has less than a thousand speakers

cornish died out in like the 18th century, those are just larpers

LARPING hard enough will revive a tongue. Check the Jews and the Manx.

Linguistic persecution and genocide by anglos. Not just in the british isles, but by anglos everywhere. That's why there's no irish spoken anywhere outside of ireland. Anglos are sadistic fuckers and will do whatever they can to destroy any language they come across.

english is a better langauge.

>That's why there's no irish spoken anywhere outside of ireland
just like any other small nation with its own language...

Famine

So do plenty of nations. Look at France for example. How many people speak Breton these days?

famine pretty much destroyed any last vestiges of irish culture. The poor were virtually wiped out and a trend of emigrating started which is still around today (kind of)

They all died because the Irish couldn't fish despite living on a fucking island, kek

Why is Welsh still alive then? It is as unholy a Celtic lingo as any other.

because they force children to learn it, they dont force children in ireland to learn irish, dont fall for the memes the irish say.

the perfidious...

because they weren't actively persecuted for speaking it
the english even changed all the place names of Ireland anglicised versions of their original names

...

rekt xD

That's really a crying shame. Irish should be at least a mandatory 2nd language course in schools and whatnot.

it is

Then why does no one speak it? If OP's map is correct. It sounds cool as fuck

the map says Native speakers, how many parents who know Irish as a second language are going to exclusively speak that around their kids?

There is literally no reason to speak it outside of school. It's just so inoconvenient that anyone who has been out of school for more than 2 years will have forgotten basically everything so they won't understand you. Some of your friends might be decent speakers but most won't so why not just speak english instead?

It would require such a massive national effort to make it worth speaking above English that it's just not gonna happen.

As you see in pic 2, 3 and 4, any non-irish speaker were smart enought to find food and survive.

A few muh heritage fags, that's about it

only the ones in the green areas on the map

more people speak than the map shows to be fair
every town will have irish speaking clubs you just have to look for it

The jews managed to turn a literal dead language into the daily language of 7 million people, script and all.

No excuses.

who cares anymore? Irish culture is dead

>Why is Welsh still alive then?
They didn't have a famine that killed most Welsh speakers

...

Is it really an inconvenient language or is fluency/literacy just low?

wew lad

both
most people are far from fluent by the end of secondary school (14 years of mandatory learning)

ANGLO'D

Even if you grant that speaking loads of languages in one country is a desirable thing (deeply questionable), I don't know why people act like it only ever happened in the UK. France was far more ruthless than we were and no one seems to rag them for it.

To be fair, jews had to do it because they had no lingua franca that united all of them at the time, as opposed to the Irish who have English.

That is exactly the same with French in Canada. We have mandatory french up to grade 9, but very few continue with the classes after that. Thing is we only learn French to appease Quebecers, whereas with the Irish language it's part of your own heritage so you'd think there would be a greater impetus to learn it.
