Is there a better way to learn massive amounts of vocab without using Anki?
I've been using Memrise as a supplementary tool, and I've had great success remembering words from that program, but Anki feels so obtuse, it's almost impossible for me to learn anything with.

2bh I procrastinated for a long time, because I thought the words would stick eventually if I just repeat them often enough (not even an ankidrone) read, read and then read some more

Why don't you try on Senryu(川柳: short poetry) as your facile exercise of Japanese?
It is a sentence which consist of 3 phrases and each phrase (upper, middle, lower) shall be in 5,7,5 letters. (The number of letters could be fractured such as 5,8,5 or 5,7,6 but not recommended)
Themes are totally arbitrary so that you can admire the beauty of nature or reminisce your past love affair.
The pic was this year's awarded masterpieces of silver Senryu(シルバー川柳:Senryu by aged people.)
Just try it.

Is the text on the right 冒険の旅 or is the last kanji something else? I think it should be, but not quite sure.

could be seen as "長", "秋", "秘", "髪" also.. while left is definitely "ダンゴムシ魔人".
Did you draw it by yourself? Nice.

Dudes, just started 10 days ago and mostly wondering if my stats look alright or if I should decrease from 20 new cards a day? Mostly having trouble with recalling the pronounciation.
Lincoln Sullivan
>20 new cards a day sounds little too much.
Jace Roberts
Thanks, and nope, that's from a manga, I wish I could draw. The left one I kinda figured, although was slightly unsure, so thanks for confirming.

"Facile" normally means superficial and has negative connotations. I wasn't even aware of the non-negative sense until looking it up now.

Anyone here using the kanjidamage deck? Only the 6k deck seems to be mentioned here
Hunter Murphy
>superficial and has negative connotations Thanks anyway. Therefore it should be "easy exercise" or something.
But Weblio present it as the translation of "手軽な" so what is the proper translation for "facile"? "お気楽", "簡便", "安易"... And finally I could come up with "チープな(chiipu-na)" for that meaning.Thanks.
Ryan Barnes
浅はか The 手軽 meaning exists according to dictionaries, but I have never heard it.
"Although facile means easy and without effort, it always carries with it the negative meaning of superficial ... facile should never be used in a complimentary sense" worldwidewords.org/topicalwords/tw-fac1.htm

I would just say "easy". Also don't fret it, "facile" absolutely does mean "easy", but in French. English probably adopted it as an obscure word 800 years ago or something.

Despite the flag I'm Russian and I have no idea how to do that myself, I'm too weeb for most Japanese people, it seems. Although I did find a guy on twitter who likes Russia so we reply to each other sometimes in moon (he doesn't speak Russian or English anyway). Considering just setting up a goddamn VPN to shitpost on 2ch (or is it 5ch now for some reason?)
If you're fine with normal people, you can google some websites for language exchange, there are a couple of them. Italki and others. There is also one pretty obscure but strangely functional Japanese-Russian one that I forgot, but maybe you'll stumble upon it.

I wanted to read and translate the Sora no Woto PSP VN, that got translated without me, but I ended up translating the Geijutsuka PSP VN instead to more or less fulfill the original purpose.
Other than that, basically just to play games with cute girls (preferably doing cute girls) when they don't have a translation.

I'm confused on what the alphabetical order equivalent of the kana is. Any helpful links?
I'm thankful for DJT and the people in it, and for the invaluable support I've received from this thread as a whole. Thank you all for posting here and learning with me, I doubt I could have stuck with it if I didn't have people to talk about it with.

ah thanks

I'm going to say stay at 20 new cards a day. I also had lie 70% retention when I started, and probably even after I finished core 2k, but nowadays I usually get 85-90%. I think it's better just to push yourself with a steady 20 cards a day than to decrease the amount of new cards and regret it later. The main goal should be to build up a foundation of vocabulary, so you can start reading, and from there, remembering words and learning new words should be easier when you see them in actual contexts.

It's doable. Hard (I do 2 repetitions a day, takes me an hour each), but doable.
I was greatly impressed with what I have seen of Japanese civility, humility, hygiene, and sense of beauty.

More practice is never a bad thing. Might cause a problem with the scheduling algorithm though - obviously I'm far more successful in the (evening) rep than in the morning, but I consider the morning rep 'canonical' and re-import it to my evening-reps device every so often.
Matthew Reed
>hygiene I think this is a total meme though what's so hygienic about the japanese, because they take off their shoes in the house? every other civilized conuntry does this as well and finns for example are famous for saunas etc., I don't see how japanese are special in this regard

playing vidya instead of learning is the path to dekinai
Juan Jenkins
The idea isn't so much as to actually play the game, but really attempt to read the text. I keep being told "do what you like," and vidya is one of my motivating reasons for wanting to learn the language. So I wouldn't really know a better way to try and push myself to read better.

I've studied 200+ words on anki and 家 is the one I struggle on the most. It's such an easy one as well. like for whatever reason my brain just doesn't want to remember it I probably had to press again when the card popped up like 10 times today.

Camden Long
I can understand OoT fine. I think the grammar is easy, text2capture identifies it pretty well, since you already know the plot you should already have an idea of what the charcters are saying and if you don't understand something all you have to do is look up Ocarina of Time Longplay on Youtube and search the textbox you're having trouble reading. The translation is VERY accurate, what you read in Japanese matches very closely in English.

> kanji is so fucked up you can read 子子子子子子 as a full sentence
Kanji is unironically much easier to understand than Kana only text. But every time we try to explain this you think we're joking or something.
Eli Evans
Is this ok? Or shall I write them in a different way? ね、れ、わ。
Logan Hill
When you start studying Japanese, you first say "Hey, I can write anything with Hiragana and Katakana, why should I use Kanji?".
After you memorize Hiragana and Katakana, you realize Kanji is necessary. It seems like a lot of work but it makes wonders to your memory after a while and is aesthetic.
Isaiah Watson
Looks fine to me, but your English is wrong. You want to say "Or should I write them in a different way?"
Asher Rodriguez
Kana only is easier
Jose Gutierrez
I only just got back into studying Japanese about a month or so ago, so I'm not really qualified to speak on it's merits, but I did use it because I already owned it from a previous abortive attempt when I was younger. I didn't do any of the exercises or anything, I basically just read the grammar explanations and copied the example sentences into Anki, and it seems like it covers reasonable enough ground for that method of learning from it. If I didn't already own Genki, and was starting from scratch I'd likely just do what I did with Genki using Tae Kim or something instead which seems more suited to doing this kind of thing anyway.
Landon Wood
