Yeah. I don't get why the American meme is so widespread. Aside from making him fat it makes no sense. In Chile we probably has the oldest traditions related to that character in Latin America. It's the main reason we don't call him Papa noel or San Nicolas and instead his name comes from Weihnachtsmann.
