Generally speaking they only do that if:
They have a relative who went there/works there
They grew up in the city/town
They visited the school/was accepted to the school and was given a free hoodie
They like their sports teams

Well, I wear an LSE hoodie my brother gave me (he graduated from there) and he wears a Cornell t-shirts I bought from uni bookstore.

No, why would anybody give a fuck what somebody else is wearing? Maybe they just like the school or they're wearing it for some family tradition. Not a big deal.
