Irish people were called "micks" back in the day in US and they were hardline catholics.
When more and more hispanics started coming the one thing common with Irish was catholicism so they were called "spanish micks" that was then shorten to spic.
...
But "mick" itself just comes from the common "Mc--" Irish surname prefix. What's that got to do with Catholicism?

I think slur is all about the intention to insult, not the actual word being used.
It is funny arguing with latinos particularly argentines who claim that "negro de mierda" is a common insult and therefore is not considered racist there. Then they usually be like "but try that in america and call a black person a nigger". But nigger is specifically an insult, it is not used for any other purpose. So when people say, go to a ghetto and call them hey niggers, I reply that I cant even call them "hey blacks" because obviously that is a provocation and would be considered an insult. But one can argue that "black" is a normal word.
