Disney is trying to appeal to "the fans" and make them "tough like the terminator". They try to avoid anything silly like the plague and that leads to soul less movies. The prequels were serious but silly at the same time. This made them look like they were unintentionally funny and that's what leads to humor and memes.

What quips? I only remember the "Don't choke on your popcorn" Vader one. Either way I think the prequels had a better balance of serious but silly and outright stupid. The new ones are very carefully planned about what HAS to be funny and what hasn't. They tell you "laugh now" and "not now, this is serious".

Marvel quipping is a way to wink at the audience, showing us this is all for fun. For all his goofy antics, Lucas' movies have a campy straightforwardness about them. This is the crucial ingredient which is missing from nu-starwars
