Hello, Sup Forums, Would anyone like to respectfully and politely discuss the forthcoming Wheel of Time television series, brought to you by Sony and Red Eagle Entertainment? If not, that's fine, too!
Now that Ed has proven he can act in a fantasy/period piece, I reckon he could pull off Rand.
After all he's got the hair colour, and with some careful forced perspective he could be toweringly tall!
Lincoln Rivera
>hums and smirks at camera >in the background, trees start growing
Charles Wood
I bet Ed is also musically gifted enough that he could learn to play the flute for real so that they could record all Rand's flute scenes on set for maximum authenticity.
John Russell
sure and just cut everything else in his storyline so we don't have to see him try to act
Levi Lewis
Well I mean they are going to have to make big story changes and some pretty savage cuts to plot lines anyway.
Bentley Kelly
Who is this guy?
Brayden Johnson
a soldier obviously can't you tell by looking at his face?
Carson Johnson
>brought to you by Sony
Lincoln Collins
Why is everyone posting about Ed Sheeran?
Asher Morgan
ed sheeran having a major role in a major WoT production is about as likely as a major WoT production actually getting off the ground
Brayden Murphy
FIRST FOR SKIPPING THE FIRST BOOK ENTIRELY AND STARTING AT THE SECOND
Isaiah Perez
they could just go "just watch the first LOTR movie" and leave it at that
Xavier Parker
>read New Spring first thinking it was the 'first' book
Jayden Roberts
Darkfriend social is better than all of the first book
Cameron Clark
Makes me hard thinking about Dumais Well shot in the style that Battle of the Bastards was done in. Aielmen exploding in a desaturated, manic shot.
Dunno, it could either be a really good or a really shit opener to the show as a whole because it involves a lot of little things that you don't know if you don't have the first book in front of it.
Matthew Perry
>a lot of little things that you don't know that describes the way the story goes for the first two books at the very least
Tyler Rogers
I know. I'm just concerned that the show will get 2 seasons and then the axe if not enough people watch it, and less people will watch it the harder it is to get into. Most fantasy books these days use the whole world-building-by-inference and that suits readers fine, but I don't know if TV audiences are willing to put that kind of brain power into their viewership.
Isaiah Hill
fucking idiot, new spring shouldn't be read until about book 6, infact reading it after finishing lord of chaos is perfect
Aaron Hernandez
What works for books doesn't work for TV shows. But it's not a big issue. You just need to have people explain shit up front instead of waiting forever to do so, or to keep pointless secrets within the group of friends. You can have a very early Moiraine noticing Rand can channel and telling him he might be the dragon, for instance. Hell, just eliminate Shaitan's fight at the end of book 1 and combine 1 and 2's story so the season ends with the world knowing Rand is the Dragon. Those books are just so full of padding it's no biggie if they brutally cut them up.
Adrian Peterson
>missing mat getting his dagger no thanks, id rather be bored for 4 episodes then miss shadar logoth
Gavin Powell
first 3 books need to be completely butchered for it to work, but you still need some things like the first attack on emonds field introducing Fain and the story of the fall of manetheren, all the various traveling that happens before they get to the borderlands can be massively reduced
Colton Cook
I'd rather miss Mat entirely.
Cooper Bell
Book one Mat is boring and easy to skip though. He gets the dagger than becomes more withdrawn and less quippy.
Michael Jackson
matt is the best part of the series, you have to see him in the beggining as the stupid idiot and watch how his character evolves. if we lose anyone it would be that boring as dirt perrin.
Lincoln Perez
>first attack on emonds field Duh, episode 1 end.
>introducing Fain Not really necessary. His former life is pointless to the role he takes. You can just make some shit up.
>and the story of the fall of manetheren Also pointless, but you could have the villagers aware of it instead of it being a surprise.
Logan Brooks
I think they'd be fine introducing the emonds field attack and fain as after the fact information, the fall of manetheren is cool and obviously comes around as a payoff about the old blood and all that but I don't think it's important enough to justify filming the first book in all its travelogue glory. If we're talking about book 2 then there's plenty of time to introduce Fain anyway since the whole thing is basically about him.
Dylan Bailey
Mat doesn't really make much progress in his character arc until book 4 or 5. There's plenty of time to establish him as a comic relief and reluctant sometimes-hero before it becomes obvious that he's actually a good person at heart.
Robert Russell
>the whole thing is basically about him Chasing him =/= about him. He gets zero concrete development about his identity or goals.
Jason Wright
Why does Fain have to even occur?
Jack Turner
i havent read in a long time, but dosent he start as soon as hes cured of the dagger? i dont recall what book that is, and then after that part where they live a million lives, and he obviously betrayed rand in some of them and started swearing he would never betray him. i just love mat, so thats why i want to see all of it
John Ward
are you serious? did you even read the books? fain hounded rand, caused events to happen, interrupted the forsakens plans etc. that would be like not having the dark one in the show
Luke Ward
He is an anomaly in the cycle and the fact that he exists is what raises Rand's philosophical questions over whether or not he can break the wheel instead of just sealing the dark one away.
Except this is true of his involvement in most of the books. The only development we get out of him apart from what Moiraine tells after interrogating him is during his own POV in the later books.
Jeremiah Anderson
>the fall of manetheren >pointless no
Henry Ramirez
Wow. Never thought of Fain this way. Guess I should actually read the books.
Lincoln Evans
He lives a million lives and blows the horn in book 2, gets healed in book 3, but even at that point he is being very careful about letting everyone know he's just going to go home to herd sheep. He makes a start in book 3 by going out of his way to help the girls when he finds out that they're in danger, but he only really comes into his own once the Band begins to form.
Kayden Garcia
No naked ample breasts every episode, no watch.
Aiden Lopez
Not that guy but I feel like the story of Manetheren and the important parts like Mordeth could be introduced to the boys by Ingtar or someone while on the hunt for the horn. Perrin would then be able to carry that tale back to the Two Rivers and use it to motivate the villagers to defend themselves and raise the red eagle standard.
Nolan Martinez
There's an awful lot of nudity going on at the White Tower. Berelain also comes to Rand in nothing but a sheer gown. Min and Rand start fucking in, what, book 6 or 7? Then they don't stop. The Aiel and the Sea Folk are not shy about getting naked constantly.
There's plenty of nudity available.
Liam Mitchell
Not nearly enough strong women in it. Sure, there are a couple sprinkled throughout the series but not enough.
Kayden Baker
you almost had me
Kevin Davis
yea I guess, its simply introducing that the people of two rivers are special basically, I guess it doesn't matter how they do it, I just really want to see moraine tell that story, don't need to see flashbacks or anything just a good actress with gravitas telling the sotry
Cooper Wright
That doesn't mean it'll make it to air, or that the women will be anywhere near busty enough. Like the queen Mat bags, or Berelain, or basically any woman, especially Graendal, or Cyndane.
The Aiel are basically naked all the time, and I kind of like the clad in the light shit, but you know that'll all get cut out.
Benjamin Sanders
90% of the women aren't truly strong, just fake 90s "strong"
Justin King
if their going for a game of thrones audience they'll use every excuse possible to show nudity, until we know what the rating is this is all speculation, i'll admit they will most likely go down the shitty sword of shannara road and make it tween shit
Colton Peterson
>reminder that men are inherently strong in the One Power than women are, the same way that men are usually more physically powerful than women, and in about the same proportions >reminder that this will get cut to avoid butthurt and twitter boycotts even though it's an important piece of information
Connor Gonzalez
Not in wind and water
Grayson Morris
In overall brute strength.
Hunter Wilson
>water will erode any stone eventually but yea they'll probably avoid that whole thing
Robert Bailey
>a woman can hold any forsaken in a shield indefiently with no problem >women hunt down all the dragons >it takes a womans help to cleanse the male half of the source >aes sedai get their dicks sucked in any nation they go to, even the whitecloak one if they did. (although theyd get in arrow in the back on the way out) im not sure what you are getting at
Nathan Martin
It's just such a different world. WoT is cleaner, more sanitized, more women in power and basically no whoring or tarts, but still lots of boobs everywhere. Also no cursing, but tons of super violence.
Carter Butler
the first book is the best though
Parker Butler
yea, I liked how even the strongest female forsaken were only about level with a good asha-man, except for experience and knowledge which counted for a lot, they'll probably avoid the whole subject, its stupid to tho even from a sjw perspective, the idea the women are weaker but can still win by being smarter and more knowledgeable seems like something they'd like
Joseph Collins
GoT knockoff
sage
Josiah Lee
>>a woman can hold any forsaken in a shield indefiently with no problem
Definitely not true.
The joke is that women hold a lot of power in the WoT universe for obvious and logical reasons but men's superior strength in magic will be omitted because it will cause butthurt amongst modern audiences who do things like try and organise twitter boycotts if you kill off a gay or lesbian character from a show and get people fired for saying things that might be construed as racist or insensitive.
Joshua Wood
yea I know, but a large part of that is the way its written, gurm loves to be gritty and vulgar, just because Robert didn't doesn't mean the actual content is any less brutal, fucked up shit happens
Kevin Rodriguez
>game of thrones book 1, published 1996 >wheel of time book 1, published 1990 hmmm really makes you think
Julian Bailey
It was dumb then, it is dumb now. It's literal magic represented by two equal halves of one whole Power. Why the FUCK would the strength be different by gender?
Nathan White
I know its b8 but you probably don't realize how stupid you are, the first asoiaf book only did well because of Jordans endorsement
David Bennett
im sorry, i didnt mean all women, but there was 1 woman, i believe she was one of the girls from two rivers that was recruited, and she had a talent where she could hold any channler in a shield and they couldnt get out no matter how strong.
Nathan Cox
GRRM stole the whole Game of Thrones concept from book 2, too.
James Nguyen
because men are stronger, they can hold more of the power, even the way they access it is completely different, also stone and fire is stronger then wind and water, their are lots of reason and they make sense, regardless the males channelers are nerfed from the start
Jonathan Hernandez
>implying a show where its absolutely integral how theres only 2 genders can ever be made >the only 2 trans people are satans lieutenants
Brody Torres
The Game of the Houses? That shit's all about subtlety and petty moves to try and gain infinitesimal amounts of privilege from every little soiree, and then assassinating someone so your wife's cousin's younger sister can move up a rank.
In any case, I'd much rather attend orgies in WoT than GoT.
Jordan Cook
that was cool, although iirc she never tried it on an asha-man so who knows what would have happened, still one of the most useful talents in the whole series until the gateway autist shows up
Benjamin Thompson
none the less if you were around at the time the influence Wot had on asoiaf was obvious, and the authors acknowledged it and took subtle digs at each other occasionally
Austin Johnson
Because there's a balance, which is a recurring theme.
The One Power is split into two halves, Saidar, the female half, and Saidin, the male half. The two halves work together but also oppose one another and exhibit very different characteristics when accessed and used.
In terms of brute strength men are stronger than women, the same way men usually have more muscle than women. The trade off is that they can't work together. Women can link and add their power to a pool which maybe used collectively to perform greater feats than any one could perform alone. They are similar but different and if you consider it all they are equal, but if you pitted the average male against the average female in a 1 on 1 fight he would be stronger than her. Doesn't mean he'd win, but he'd be stronger.
Dominic Williams
post >yfw they somehow work into Sea Folk culture the idea that gender is fluid like the ocean and no one cares about being men or women they simply exist and that's why they all get naked as soon as there are no gaijins on their boats
Adam Ross
>Billy Zane of the acclaimed Phantom movie
K I N O I N O
Sebastian Rogers
Rand is literally like 6 foot 6 in the books and darker than the average white person. I get it's bait but NO.
Imagine trying to incorporate the idea of weaves into a TV show, let alone an audience actually understanding what's happening on screen. WoT will never work on TV, sadly.
Christian Gomez
yeah like the action in the books alternates between 2 magic users staring at each other intensely while invisible magic shit happens around them
and then theres shit like dumais wells where it would cost a bajillion dollars to film
Easton Morales
id imagine they would have to show it through the casters eyes at first, so they know that only they see whtas going on
Dominic Nelson
Weaves can be done with a lot of intricate CGI.
Jordan Phillips
Eh, weaves are important to the world but they will get skipped. At one point one of the Aes Sedai mentions that most, if not all, of the channelers in the tower usually end up acquiring hand movements that go with certain weaves such as a throwing action for lightning bolts and shit. They will just do this instead. Channeling will be associated with shouting and hand having and Nynaeve's fight with Moghedien will be changed to involve no shielding or some shit even though shielding is important to the series as a whole.
Logan Morgan
The cost to do it would be tremendous, to be honest. A scene like Falme would be as large and grandiose in anything in GoT and it's the climax of book 2. Then there's Dumai's Wells. the clash at the Eye of the World, battles where Rand solo-kills 100,000 Trollocs from his cabin in the woods, etc.
Colton Nelson
you could show the weaves which is the only way it would work, but that would cost a buttload too, idk I just can't see this working at all, one of the reasons got did is because all the magic is fairly subtle, this is balls out destroying cities and shit, it just won't work
Gabriel Williams
i could honestly see the show doing very well among sjw crowds. They are probably too stupid to realise that the entire series is an argument for why women should never be given any power, whether RJ admits that or not.
James Carter
I want to see Shadar Logoth represented. Massive desolate cities are always cool.
Colton Harris
everything once they get to cairhien onwards is unfilmable it would just cost way to fucking much
Elijah James
I also want shadar logoth, its something that could be done on a tv budget with all the mist darkness, same for the pathways for that matter, some stuff could be done and done well but over all, nah no way its impossible, the very first trolloc we ever see on screen will confirm this plus red eagle is still involved, the cheeky fucks its doa
Evan Hughes
Falme would be expensive but doesn't have to be that incredible since it's mostly told from the POV of the boys in the city, and then the heroes of the horn being thick fog with them.
End of book 3 wouldn't need to be too expensive since it's corridor fighting for the most part so no big sets or casts of thousands necessary. Book 4 also doesn't have an ending that needs to be expensive. The battle for Cairhien could get pricey, Dumais Well will be expensive. The attack on Illian could be filmed creatively I suppose, likewise Rand's fuck up in Altara wouldn't need to be amazingly expensive. Perrin's whole fucking ragtag army vs the Shaido will be expensive. The cleansing might be expensive but the cast isn't huge, and then after that the battles only get bigger.
I hope Sony has money to throw away.
Sebastian Green
Trollocs need to be nailed as the vile man-creatures they are, some being birds, other more like pigs. Also need to show them eating and cooking people.
The problem is, beyond fantasy nerds, plebs will just see WoT for all its copying or LotR: idyllic countryside, hooded riders, journeys in the dark, etc.
Josiah Sanchez
That's just a strong argument for skipping book 1. It diverts from LotR ripoff quickly and if you skip the first book then barely any of it makes it into the show.
Joseph Green
>Red Eagle Entertainment
Your supposed to leave them out.
Juan Foster
I like book 1 for being camp-tastic, as in, a lot of wilderness camping.
Chase Torres
this desu. book 1 is by far the comfiest with all the taverns and camping.
Nicholas Diaz
the trolloc look is impossible to get right for a tv budget heres a shitty version that would be easier then some, these ones look way to human, but even this is still not doable
Easton Kelly
>try reading the first book >read all day long >realize the story is going nowhere >finally get to a point where the main character leaves town with some magical chick and some warrior guy >look at how much of the book I've read >literally about a tenth of the book I had to give it up. I don't know why Robert Jordan decided to make his books so tediously long.
Thomas Butler
It's not going to change your mind, but once you're finished the series as a whole you can really appreciate the point of the scale. It's one of the things that will be lost in translation to any adaptation.
Joseph Foster
I like the aesthetic of wooden and stone towns with lots of fires and lanterns and tavern music and what not.
I know the one thing they WILL fuck up, WoT is clearly more 1500s-1600s than it is medieval like GoT. That'll never make it through.
Thomas Allen
>5 hours in make up for every single actor playing a trolloc
;_;
Alexander Martinez
How do you just "skip" book one though? It establishes literally everything.
Sebastian Wright
LOTR ripoff. Mat and Perrin are like Sam and Pippin.
Cameron Lopez
>literally about a tenth of the book
Eye of the World is like 650 pages, so it took you all day to read 65 pages. C'mon mate.
Aaron Howard
>Rand 6'2"+ >Matt 5'11" (Manlet to Aiel) >Perin 6'6"+
>All the non-aiel women are fucking tiny
Height difference porn when.
Andrew Rivera
I agree its a great aesthetic but i think most of the sets are gunna be cgi
Dominic Myers
It's all world building though and its actual plot is not important to the story at large except as a vehicle for delivering information.
Have you read a fantasy book that has come out in the last 10 years? They don't deliver information on the world the way they used to, it gets doled out in small amounts as and where necessary and the rest is left up to the reader to infer. The system works perfectly well and is much better suited to a post-GoT world where adapting the first book will just lead to a tedious first season.
Camden Davis
So let's say 11 episodes for S1?
I think we can agree
>Edmund fields, ends with the attack (possible cold open with the Darkfriend social)
>They leave and general world building, arrive at Shiadar Logoth at end
>SL and everyone getting seperated
I think that's a solid first 3 to get people interested.
Michael Stewart
>reading book 8 >260 pages deep >still haven't gotten to Rand the book is 660 pages
