Pop Science

Is there a more hateable class of human being than the smug, under-achieving, condescending pop scientist (and those who idolise them)?

this is actually something i really bloody hate and has turned me towards young earth creationism

We have this faggot.
He does a series of "documentaries" which are basically lefty talking points on the social issue du jour in NZ, and he somehow gets away with screening them right before an election when normally there are broadcast restrictions on material that encourage you to vote in a certain way.

nearly threw my tv out the window last night watching this fuckwit act like he knows anything about science on q&a

He had the bloody nerve to make a show called "The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show" and it was fucking left wing

I look like a friendly science man, but I'm not.

I'm an entitled eco-activist who demands Canadian taxpayers pay for my "bodyguards" (escorts).

If you don't think I'm a good man, go to jail. My friends Wynne and Trudeau will call you a racist homophobe.

His books are fun to read...

I'm pretty sure that guy is a closet homosexual.

His science is good for tv though.

Not great, but watchable.

you are looking at it too narrowly

>1. if you already understand what he talks/writes about then why the fuck would you be watching it. Do I still read picture books? Fuck no.

>2.if you don't understand him, then pay attention you unknowledgeable cunt, you may learn some bullshit that you will never be able to apply to your real life.

>3.kids, look how cool all this science stuff is! Be inspired and shit!

In short, Pop Science has a positive net effect on your stupid ass.

How does Sup Forums feel about Dr. Franklin Ruehl?

youtube.com/watch?v=srpqCKQ7gM0

I fucking hate that guy. Was about to close Sup Forums and go to bed but sticking around long enough to post this. Fuck Nigel Latta.

But pop-sci has pretty much crowded out all the good documentaries that used to be made before they decided to market to people with the intelligence of a 6 year old.

>you may learn some bullshit that you will never be able to apply to your real life.

Ha. Wrong! Never been to a pub quiz before?

That Q&A was hard to stomach yes, but Malcolm Roberts really did not understand why he was wrong right about Climate Change. This is the first I've ever seen or heard of him but he seemed entirely reasonable.

And citing the UN's IPCC as evidence against climate science was just ripe.

At least Cox and Dawkins are real scientists.
Unlike Nye the engineer guy and Neil "dindu science" Tyson

You're retarded, go away Ken Hamm

God this guy was a smug fuckwit on QandA last night.

>but m-muh graphs

when they speak in their fields they're okay but as soon as the go out of their field of expertise they become insufferable cunts

>Neil "dindu science" Tyson
ahahaaha

The only other time I'd seen him was on an episode of QI and he wasn't much better there either.

Brian Cox is an actual scientist though, same for Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

Brian Cox is cute, though.

>watching (((documentaries))) and not analyzing research papers and media releases

Can you even colour in between the lines?

Their job is to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
You are not their target audience

sounds like /x/'s wet dream

fair call

"I'm not an expert on this, but let me tell you about it anyway. Also, governments aren't doing enough!"

Nigel Latta is fuckwit, and I'm left wing

I can't stand the BBC but they do science and nature very well, although I've started to notice SJW lies in their science coverage. Brian Cox is 1% annoying smug I’ll admit, but he is a real deal scientist. He isn't a passenger.

Bill Nye the Bachelor of Engineering guy.

Fuck off you shit-eating Aus moron. Brian Cox btfo that stupid cunt last night and everyone knows it.

I hate those Youtube backyard scientists that do hundreds of videos about dry ice and liquid nitrogen.

That rig looks a little weird compared to the usual burger ones I see but goddamn how aesthetic, he looks like one of those WW2 british desert rats brought back to life

ABC claps were objectively worse than Brian Cox

And also that woman said "Oh shut up" towards the end when Roberts told a joke

>Not a passanger.

Oh, so all the student loans that his students pay him aren't funded by the government, grants, and then not often not payed back because of inflated university costs and no competition between them? Or like how universities aren't funded at all by grants from the governments, where departments compete for grants and often get them depending upon how 'useful' their research is to the government?

He's a welfare queen. Total passenger.

I find it funnier that a Brit is carrying around not one but two tubes of toothpaste. Talk about staged.

>Let me pretend to be an expert in things I have little to no knowledge about because I'm a scientist, 'n sheit. You must respect my authority.

great politics thread
enjoy your ban

They are fucking clowns and it disgust me that i somethime watch them instead of reading a good article from arxiv instead of looking at their over simplified crap

If you thought he came across as reasonable then no offence but you're pretty fucking dumb. If it was actually a proper debate program and they had someone up there who wasn't just a token shill or meme then he would have been torn apart.

It's scary to think people can watch a program like that and still hold positive views of someone that stupid.

I say this as someone right wing too, not some lefty cuck offended by his views on Nauru

What, do you think he and his fellow CERN physicists should sell lottery tickets to fund "their little experiment"? Grow up, tough guy. This is one of the fields that actually does real research. If you want to point fingers at waste in that system almost anything else will be worse after scrutiny.

yu rang?

Funding should be voluntary. Universities are not welfare schemes.

If you think that physics is immune to politicizing, then you're naive.

What was the actual topic last night? Uni finishes late now so I don't get to join in the threads anymore.

Bill Nye the bachelor degree guy

I used to like it a little until I realized it was nerds trying to convey depth and coolness and I just want them to actually make a show where half the shit is pseudo science tier.

kek

>pop scientist

>Advanced Fellow of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester

I tend to look at them as "they used their full mental capacity and this is what they achieved" then I'm ok with that because they and their followers can't really comprehend science to the point they have to make it 'fun' and import sensationalism in it to be appealing to them. And I'm ok with that because I remember the time when science was not popular at all and was considered dull, for only one type of people (nerds, betas) even pop science contributes to society in the means of informing it a bit.

More hateable class are the religious people that disregard any form of scientific achievements and, even more, are against it because in their view it's 'playing God'

I fucking hate that guy. There are lots of stories of him being a huge asshole. His only claim to fame is being the host of a 90s kid's show.

That is PRINCE HARRY fuckhead

Carl Sagan was king!

So are there actually good shows out there for introducing science to children?

Do you know anything about brian cox at all? I'm going to assume your knowledge of him extends to the extent of you verbally mastubating in the /qanda/ general monday night after pulling 3 or 4 cones and downing have a case of vb before running off to the bathroom to pour half a litre of aloe vera down your rectum to stop the arsepain because of "muh one nation". If you actually were familar with his work you would know his primary occupation is that of a physicist and he does some science documentaries on the side, he is not just a broadcaster who knows a rudimentary level of physics.

Yes.

The subversive and manipulative pop-scientist who use their position to promote globalism and other marxist ideas.

This kike right here.

>So that must mean he's a climate expert, right?

He's hating on the appeal to authority he's invoking.

They are useful in order to get funding into certain areas. The downside is that it's sort of unbalanced at times, for example astronomy gets a SHIT-TON of money when other areas really struggle because they're not as 'popular' + do not know how to sell themselves.

But science documentary are just utterly boring. It's always the same sensationalist claims repeated over and over again.

Also why is there so much bullshit told about quantum physics ? You'd understand a lot more if you were shown the math side of it but it of course cannot be done on TV. There are many more things you could present on TV that are cool and could be explained in great detail without invoking the 'muh universe', 'muh beautiful science', 'muh black matter', 'muh quantum physics is so hard you can't understand it' memes so damn much.

He's an actual scientist.
More so than any other "scientist" in this thread.

Fuck you Brian Cox is fucking brilliant!

...

Supply citations of his papers

Brian Cox really is a pop musician.
He was in the bands Dare and D:Ream

I love watching documentaries and I find that to be a bit of an issue as well. You kind of have to find ones that have a very specific topic but even that doesn't work sometimes.

For instance I watched one about the development and history of the telescope and it did what it said on the box, told the history of the telescope.

I then watched another one about a very specific telescope, I forget which one, and it basically glossed over how and why it was built and just went straight in to all this theoretical stuff about what's out there in the universe.

We dont give a shit about your monarchy

Just because Clarke wouldn't fuck you in the arse

>is there more a hateable class of human being

Yes there is..

>Bill Nye the Goyim Guy
I love it when (((intellectuals))) think him, Steven "im to gay to walk" hawking and le black science man are some sort of holy trinity.
>let me interject on subjects because I'm smarter then you
>you should blindly follow my leftist talking points because I know better

>not taking the piss when with your boys

I think you've just proved OP's point.

...

I thought that's exactly what I was doing

Scientists often lack humility because they are these days mostly hard materialists and atheists, so they see no problem in milking their fame for power.

the kang will eradicate all science cept gunz

Fuck you

Time had been around since before time began, and time will be around long after time ends

>one has a Bachelor's in Engineering
>talks about Carl Sagan like they sat behind telescopes together for years

>Hawking was literally wrong about everything in the only book that mattered: A brief history of time

>Negro fraud hype guy isn't worth a full explanation

"Hawking, one of the smartest people on Earth, says that AI could overrun humanity!"

His role is to inspire.

He does that well.

Infact I only consider sagan better.

>I don't like how some scientists try to educate teh stupid masses by being "hip"
>Therefore I will be contrarian common sense

Another post?

Go outside user.

>also you sold your soul
>inb4 doxx

I like you.

That would be good if most of the population weren't essentially large children.

I'm a scientist and while I don't watch scientific outreach programs belonging my field, they are usually rigurous and at the same time easy to understand, which is no easy feat. In OPs case, I watched a documentary series about the solar system and I thoroughly enjoyed it, because it did not focus too much in the anecdotal and was not condescending to the audience, I cannot speak for its rigor since it's not my field though.

What I despise is the modern, shallow way of conveying science especially to young people as something cool and random, with slogans like "Why? Because science! LOL xD" which drowns any semblance of curiosity and inquisivity and remains in the shallow, flashy side which is an infinitesimal part of it. This is part of a general trend that I think applies to politics and economics as far as I'm concerned they do more harm than good and will probably result in a poorly educated youth that are 100% convinced they are highly educated.

>Getting kids hyped for science is bad.

Fuck off. They're doing their part.

#IFuckingLoveScience in a nutshell. When I see people reading that shit I cringe.

He used to be better but SJW have thrown numerous tantrums whenever he's said anything that even remotely contradicts their worldview, Jared Diamond went from being loved by leftists to being hated and ignored by them for the same reason.

This prick has the kind of head I could joyfully kick for hours.

Orville Reddenbacher was a scientist?

kek, I had that particular one in mind when I was writing my post. """scientific""" clickbait.

>There are lots of stories of him being a huge asshole.

Name some?

We've already had a generation of poorly educated youth that are 100% convinced they are highly educated, they're called Baby Boomers

More parentheses are required than there are electrons in the universe to adequately convey the purely nominal nature of "science" in that shitshow.
