Red vs. Blue

I just binged through eight seasons of this, and while I know there's plenty more, I really feel like talking about it.

Goddamn what a fucking ride. I started watching because I remember finding the early seasons really funny as a kid, and I wanted to see how well that stacked up, and surprisingly they did. There is some genuinely clever writing and use of timing for jokes; all framed around the limitation of 'animating' things in a fucking Halo 1 multiplayer map.

Exiting season five though I have some mixed feelings- but not in a particularly bad way. The shift to a dramedy format was kind of weird, and I felt that some of the retcons were a little ham-fisted. Plus I'm sure if I thought hard enough, I could pick out plenty of plot holes that don't line up well with the new 'revelations', but I won't get into that because there's still more for me to watch, and frankly I understand that the Blood Gulch Chronicles were a goddamn comedy, and wasn't meant to be taken too seriously.

Still, taken at face value, I found the new attempts at a more focused story to be interesting unto itself, and maybe it was because I'd ran through so many episodes in such a short amount of time, but it was a huge 'Jesus Christ' moment when this happened.

The shift to full blown animation was both jarring and impressive. Season eight had some really eye catching visual moments, and the entire finale was surprisingly dramatic and heartfelt.

Anyway, I've never really seen Sup Forums talk about this series too much, and I was just wondering what your thoughts were.

Yes it is. It's a cartoon.

It's a video game machinima.

is this a meme? where do i sign up to post this thread next time

If you read my post, you'd note that it had a very jarring transition to in-house animation.

Brother when I want to fucking meme on someone I'll fucking meme on someone. I just spent the last several days watching this, and I was just sort of hoping to talk about it.

If you read the title of this board you'd note that it's cartoons and comics. This is neither. There's a video game board, champ.

I didn't know video games could be watched on Netflix.

First five seasons are great
6-8 are okay
9 and 10 are absolute garbage
11-13 start strong, but gradually settle back into just being okay
Haven't tried 14 yet

How is this video games, especially when the later seasons were animated on their own?

They're making new streaming stuff available these days.

Sup Forums actually had a RT thread going for a while despite what are thinking, but it usually got eaten up by another RT show general containment and got moved to /trash/ until that starts up again in a couple months.

I'm not sure where they mean to take it atm. Season 14 (currently weekly episodes) has gone to a completely episodic bit of a filler season, telling stories elsewhere in the RvB setting. Loved the one for Locust and Felix's origins, but you'll meet them in later seasons.

ITS A LEGITIMATE STRATEGY.

>Do we have a crock pot?

>No, Caboose made a trade with that annoying guy from Blue Command. He swapped it for a mystery box.

>What was in the mystery box?

>A hundred and forty jars of mayonnaise.

>...

>Well that's a good trade.

The moment of silence right before the last line was impeccable.

GRIFFFFBALLLLL

If you've liked it up to this point I feel like you'll like the rest. Come back when we're done with 9 and 10, those are my favorites.

Just like John Wayne woulda done.

Just had the same ride, user.

I remember way back in high school I dropped it because it started getting so plot heavy into what I saw as a dumbass story-line.

Looking at it now, I'm glad I watched it again. It'd not a great story for the years, but it's got awesome moments and it speaks to me now more than it ever would have when I was in high school.

solid 7/10 overall; has some weak parts in the middle where it tries to figure out what it's trying to do, but has some truly good parts after a while and ends on a really fucking strong note.

I sincerely hope they don't continue the story; expand the universe, but keep the RvB wrapped up.

They lost me when they decided they were going to try and edge out the absurd comedy with mildly serious sci-fi military drama and ridiculously choreographed action scenes that lasted forever. I didn't care one bit about Project Freelancer other than Agent Washington. And the ending with the director was some melodrama horse shit.

They almost won me back with the last story arc (Chorus planet or something?).

When I watched it as a teenager, I thought the Blood Gulch stuff was boring and that Freelancer stuff was cool as fuck.

I binge watched it like a year ago, and I found it the opposite. The Blood Gulch stuff was based as fuck, and the Freelancer stuff was deviantart tier anime fanfiction shit. It literally made me cringe.

Season 11 was aight, but 12 and 13 slipped back into the cringey Halo fanfiction. Season 14 has been pretty great so far.

The only thing, looking back on the Blood Gulch stuff, is that I get GIR vibes from Caboose a little.

Other than though, a lot of the jokes were pretty timeless.

Holy crap, WHO IS RUNNING THIS ARMY!?

Settle a bet, will ya?

Does that thing look like a big cat?

What are they talking about?

You know what? I fuckin' hate you.

If people like this shit so much why don't Microsoft (fucking Microsoft) get a good budget to put some actual production values into this show?

Well the charm was that it was a machinima at the start. Working within a set of limitations to try and stage a story.

But they did kind of get a budget later on.

>Not a cartoon
Literally kill yourself

Leet World and Arby n the Chief were better

I've only watched 1-5, and that was ages ago. Where do you watch the rest of them without paying for them?

Never watched Leet World, but I do remember Arby and the Chief. I remember anxiously waiting for each episode in the final season.

For such a limited budget, there were some incredibly bleak scenes in the final season. Particularly when they the leader of those guys kills himself.

I'm still pissed at the ending though. Not for the fact they're both dead, but because during the entire season, it was becoming more and more apparent they wanted to kill themselves. Then, there was a little turn-around moment where Arby talks to that girl online, and agrees to play with her at least once a week. Immediately after that though, he just goes along with Chief's suicide plan.

That irked the shit out of me. If you're going to have them commit suicide, don't have a scene right before that where all of a sudden the tone shifts dramatically to "Oh, maybe everything isn't shit".

All of the back episodes are on the Red vs Blue youtube channel and on their website.

There's a season 8 that's currently running, first bit is a 2001 parody that leads into the toys coming back to life.

Pretty fucking good IMO.

Season 13 finale was a fucking gut punch and is one of the few pieces of entertainment that got a legitimate emotional response out of me.

I never really got too into it, myself. I watch it only because I don't have anything better to do, but frankly, watching a troop of complete idiots bumble their way to victory after victory through sheer dumb luck lost its charm super-quickly.

At some point in the show, Sarge mentions that they beat Freelance-trained operatives every single time they encountered them. He fails to mention that they got those victories because every single time- without exception- there was a goal that the Freelancers or whoever were trying to accomplish besides just "defeat the enemy," a barrier the reds and blues never had.

I know a lot of people prefer the old seasons, but I felt the last few finally had a good balance between the comedy and the story.

...Seriously, dude? The S13 finale just re-used the whole "Church is super-dead forever" ending they did with the end of Tex's storyline. How the hell does that get you emotional?

...

I couldn't get into it once Monty started working on it. Lost all of its charm.

Fire Team Charlie made me laugh more, but RvB was way more consistent

this

once it went away from strict machinama, i just dropped it. i mean. fuck, you work with that format for 5 fucking seasons and then decide its good to add in cheesy PS1 tier fight cutscenes?

I spent most of 9th grade quoting Red vs Blue with my friends. I can still recite most of the dialogue from season 1 from memory. Season 2 never grabbed me, though, and I think I stopped midway through season 3.

Is it worth going back and revisiting?

I liked Montys work when it added to the comedy rather then the action, like in the episode OP posted and the one after that.

The first 5 seasons are great. They have a real Adult Swim/ classic Adam Reed vibe.

Been watching since season 2. Bit disappointed with anything past season 5, but I really enjoyed 7. Had that classic feel to it.

Yeah the retcons were weird at times. Like, how did they never notice that Church was a robot? He never took off his helmet. How did HE not realize he was a robot?
>Some user saved the shitty image I posted in a Halo thread months ago
Noice

He wasn't a robot up until he was killed by Caboose in season 1. The latest season retconned the retcon so that he was possessing a body the whole time up until then. So Church (and everyone esle), must've thought that was his own body.

Seasons 9 and 10 are major downhill slides, but they bounce back big time in season 11.

youtu.be/e9g1h4nwTcE?t=388

i still really like the end twist of Reconstruction

The Funhaus episodes were the best thing to happen in the last 9 or so series.

Shame we'll never get a sequel to them.

Ok, I haven't watched the newer stuff for at least 2 years.
So was he an Ai chip that took over a host? Creepy.

So Church's time line is
>gets made by director
>gets formed into psuedo-director
>gets implanted in Jimmy
>gets killed as Jimmy
>gets a robot body
>gets killed a lot in robot body
>emps self
>gets new church'd by epsilon
>rips self apart

Being church is suffering

It was good as a comedy.

The Freelancer Saga was just utter fucking shit. The all CGI part of the story was just amazingly shit.

I never liked Red vs Blue but I loved Arby n the Chief

For what it was, I really liked Arby n the Chief. I thought the puppeteering for the figures was amazing and the humour to be hilarious(debatable). I thought Chief and Arbiter had great contrast as characters as well as having great chemistry together. I don't like Cortana too much because of her incessant preaching, but i did like Greg the spider. The voice acting can be pretty terrible and Jon has no change of tone to voice both of the main antagonists of later seasons. Six episodes of Season 8 are out now and I'm still a fan.

Consistently funny for six or seven seasons, which not many series can claim.

Who is the best character?

The scene earlier in the season where Eugene released that kids horse porn on his social media accounts made my blood run cold.

Not because I fap to horses, but because if my /d/ material ever got leaked, I'd seriously consider offing myself instead of dealing with the social ramifications.

>Being church is suffering

Probably could understand that as early as season 1.

Sarge covers all angles. He fits into the comedy of S1-5 perfectly for all those who prefer the more comedic tones there, and for those who love the Freelancers shit, just know Sarge shits all over it by besting Tex, Wash and the Meta in combat over his career.

Plus he also did technically wipe out the Blue team. Suck it blue

Tucker blowing Felix the fuck out is so fucking satisfying
