Even a brainlet like you should now that there was a period in human history when artists were at the mercy of either powerful rulers or religious organizations due to their privileged position in society that used them as tools to support their respective narratives.
Why do you think that pretty much all paintings from the middle ages are either portraits or depicting biblical stories?
When things changed with the Renaissance artists were trying to depict other things, first is was classical sciences than landscapes and common scenes, same developed in modern music which later culminated in stuff like Rock and later even techno.
