Atheist about to watch Silence

What am I in for?
I don't know if I'm gonna like it or not. Is it too much "oh muh Christianity" for me?

PS: I hated Hacksaw Ridge for the same reason

no, it fairly represents what it shows, and it's not preachy at all. you'll sympathize with the Christians, but you'll also understand the reasoning of the Japanese inquisitors.

A good film.

It's all about struggling with faith. I've never seen a Mel Gibson movie but I'm assuming he has a huge hardon for jesus. This movie repeats the word apostate 500 times.
Though the pacing might be hard to deal with. Watch it

It's not preachy like Mel, it's about Christians but it's not trying to convert you or anything.

i didnt liked hacksaw ridge that much but i didnt saw it as being preachy. The character believed in it but the movie itself never sold it as the truth, it simply justified his actions and made you understand why he would do the things he did.

This movie is probably the same on that regard.

I read that Scorsese originally wanted to cast Benecio Del Toro and Daniel Day Lewis. Instead we got the teenage heartthrobs.

Its very atmospheric and with beautiful visuals. Even cosy if you ignore the torture porn. It can almost trick you into thinking its a good movie. But no: pure christian propaganda.

I can't think of any way to ruin a movie more than to come on here and have a discussion about it right before watching it. People on this board have shitty opinions that aren't worth listening to, you should never care what they think.

im agnostic and i liked the movie. i think even christians find the main character to be a fucking retard. its like a comedy about a moron who tries to do the same shit over and over again, except its not funny at all

That would have been better but the end film was also good.

silently cried one tear at the ending and didn't realize it until i looked at myself in the bathroom mirror afterward. first time that's ever happened.

im sure the movie is inspiring for religious people somehow, but i definitively feel like it doesnt have a "pro religion" message or anything. its more universal

all the christians in the movie (except kylo ren) are dumbass hacks. even liam neesons is just another dumbass idiot. i feel like the movie is just about how its nice to have something to hold onto. or something. its not religion-preachy at all

Daniel day lewis would have been fantastic as always but instead we get this fucking andrew garfield mongloid

day lewis in the role liam neeson played, you retard

also, andrew garfield is a pretty decent actor desu

you won't be able to understand it, might as well just go watch rick and morty

Two hipster faggots. Could be a good movie if it were cast with some normal looking people.

A WELL MADE "MOVIE", AND A GOOD STORY REGARDING FAITHFUL STRUGGLE, BUT IT IS NOT HISTORICALLY ACCURATE; IT IS HISTORICAL FANTASY.

ACTUALLY, JESUITS ARE AN ANTICHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION AT THE SERVICE OF ZIONISM; JESUITS WENT TO JAPAN ON A SUBVERSIVE SOCIOPOLITICAL EXPEDITION, NOT ON A SPIRITUAL MISSION TO TEACH JESUS' DOCTRINE, WHICH IS WHY THE JAPANESE STATE REACTED BY EXPELLING THEM, AND BY CLOSING ITS BORDERS TO THE WORLD —THE ENTIRETY OF JUDEOCHRISTIAN NATIONSTATES AT THE TIME WERE WORKING TOGETHER.

how do you sympathize with the inquisitors? they chose the most sleazy looking actors, they wrote the most denigrating dialog for them, they even turned their argument into an obtuse marsh metaphor.

Adam Driver isn't really a "heartthrobe", he's pretty ugly. And he's a good actor when not doing meme movies like Star Wars.

is that metal fetishist on the right

Is it possible to truly appreciate and understand film without ever having faith?

when so much of cinema (particularly art cinema) revolves around human spirituality and the abstract and unknown, how can you really claim to understand it when you have no frame of reference or experience yourself?

I'm pretty atheist and thoroughly enjoyed Silence, myself.
On the other hand, there's an exotic feeling to watching faith movies as an atheist, faith is a enviable thing.

corny as fuck
might as well watch a saturday morning cartoon

theres a reason this thing went str8 to redbox

honestly best show of 2016 along with the neon demon

It's a overall good movie, but some parts dragged on too long.

it was going to be Gael Garcia Bernal
There are four sides in Silence: Christian fathers, Japanese Krishtians, Japanese Inquisitors and [spoilers]God's silence[/spoilers]

Silence was an incredible film, visually as stunning and emotionally as compelling as anything he's ever done, and pic related was fucking flawlessly done.

Silence is 10/10, top shelf kino.

They really ought to bang his name on the posters, especially since it's a Japanese novel. He had a deceptively difficult role, I doubt you'd see many western actors pull it off.

Just go in knowing that the repetitiveness is part of the point. It's key to the feeling of exhaustion.

Looks great for the most part.

The voiceovers are fucking stupid though and should've been left out. It's not that having a voiceover is inherently unacceptable or anything. Goodfellas voiceovers work well. In Silence though, you'll be rolling your eyes at the content of the voiceovers. Even if you decide it makes sense it might take you out of it. I know it took me out because of how much of them sounded like "trailer quotes".

It doesn't fucking matter what religion / spiritual belief / atheism you follow / believe in / doubt, Silence is a perfect fucking film.

>I hated Hacksaw Ridge for the same reason

your heart isn't in the right place user if you didn't like Mel's heartfelt kinotribution

Same thing I felt, although I'm a doubter ("I don't know"). I felt the incredible power of having faith (belief, persistence, tenacity, call it whatever) in something that in reality will never have feedback / assurance about.
It was an incredible viewing experience.

I think you probably misunderstood the film in that case, which was more psychological than spiritual, and it certainly didn't suggest that faith was powerful or transcendent. It constantly brought it up against realities like pain, lifestyle, love, pity, compassion and belittled it.

t. I have no idea what true devotion is about

FUCKING APOSTASIZE

I marked in the back of an envelope every time the Inquisitor Inoe said "apostate", I only stopped once i've marked it several times.

Also, I noticed every time the characters stood in silence, the narrator said instead they "contemplated God".

Yeah, and Tadanobu Asano is brilliant in it as well. My two favourite people in modern Japanese cinema.

Hacksaw ridge wasn't religious though, really. Faith was an important part of the character's motivation, but it was not pushed at the audience. If you're the type of atheist that can't tolerate seeing even that, then steer clear of this movie. And maybe even don't go outside anymore.

Otherwise it's good.

It had a very clear "If you're not religious (a good Christian*wink wink*), you're a bad human being who wants war and chaos." message. the old "non-believers don't have morals because they don't follow a religion" argument. I didn't like it for that reason.

I'm currently holding back watching Bergman's Faith Trilogy for that reason. I want to watch it and I really want to like it, but I'm afraid I'm going to hate it for being stupid.

Atheist here. Loved this and The Young Pope. 2016 a year of christkino.

>they
The dialogue and and the marsh metaphor are straight out of the book.
