>Netflix users who already pay to access the service could be about to see their monthly price plans rise, as some US states consider a tax on streaming content online. >The levy is being considered in states across the US, which could see taxes on subscription fees for the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu of around $1 per month each. >The tax, which would allow local governments to tap into another revenue stream, is already due to come into effect in Chicago, Pennsylvania and Florida, but now it is reported that California, Alabama, Louisiana and West Virginia are also considering the added fee. >Municipal governments that are pushing for the tax defend the initiative by claiming that online streaming is essentially the same as video rental from bygone brick and mortar stores such as Blockbuster Video, which were taxed at the time.
Thoughts on this? They're not wrong, streaming services don't charge taxes which makes them unfairly cheaper to Redbox and movie theaters which isn't fair to those businesses.
you're already paying a tax by exorbitant prices paid to cable companies to get access to a big enough pipe.
Wyatt Wilson
I wonder how many people will suddenly become libertarian once they hear this
Jackson Roberts
This is entirely because of ISP's lobbying congressmen. They raise charges to consumers, pocket a hefty profit, and refuse to upgrade their infrastructure.

Estate tax although it doesn't really impact you at all unless you die with $12 million or more in assets
Jackson Moore
So maybe Netflix can go to a "download the movie/show fully before watching so that it's not technically streaming for less money"-option then. Or are they going to tax any kind of downloading?
Christian Butler
*death
net neutrality is what caused the ISP oligopoly in the first place, retard.
Aaron Carter
>and refuse to upgrade their infrastructure.
I don't get this, because it's usually the tax payers that pay for upgrading the infrastructure anyway. All the ISP have to do is pester the local government like they usually do.
Asher Jones
wtf I love corporate cock raping my public developed technologies now

The streaming dream is dead anyway, with every publisher starting their own service (HBO, soon Disney and surely WB to follow) it's becoming so inconvenient to stream again that it's both easier and far cheaper to pirate. There was a short time where the convenience of Netflix made up for the price but thanks to jewish publishers and Netflix wanting to spend billions on their mostly garbage original programming we've come back to the problem Netflix was originally supposed to solve anyway. I'm sure there'll still be profits to be made but I also think a lot of people are going to go back to piracy again if they haven't already as the Netflix library gets shittier and shittier.
Juan Diaz
how so?
Thomas Rodriguez
The internet's back bone is public. Kys.

Yes, let's give ISPs an option to block entire sites and make the internet second television shitfest, which is a big part of television decline in the first place.
Can't wait to pay more for something I am already paying for.

They did this in my country.
There is no way to justify the sales tax here - they just did it because the government are Jews.
But I'm going to drop Netflix for unrelated reasons anyway.
Xavier Walker
I never understood why slippery slope is a fallacy.

>tfw you make an obvious joke
Isaiah Allen
I'm not so sure about that anymore.
It seems a lot of corporations are benefitting from the monopoly provided by net-neutrality, while at the same excusing their behavior with "muh free market".
Then again, it's not like google would be threatened by net-neutrality, they'd just buy up all the bandwidth from the ISP.
There's like 4 screens or something allowed. So I pay for Netflix, my roommate pays for another service, and we all just share them.
Jace Garcia
Not the guy you are talking to, but this sort of missed the point of this There is going to be a day when you realize you are responsible for the things you guy and not corporations. No one is forcing you to pay for netflix if find it expensive.
Eli Morris
There are only two certainties in life: death and taxes. Oh, just wait until every network starts their own streaming service, and you end up paying just as much, if not more, than you currently do for cable.
Caleb Harris
I know you're joking but god damn I fucking hate libertarians more than communists

It's technically not a fallacy, but it's used in a lot of fallacious arguments.
