No

I grew up during the 70s and 80s, when anything even slightly out of the ordinary made you a freak, and can't remember a single instance of anyone being bullied for being ginger.

Brits bulllying gingers are kind of masochists innit?

2) no almost not at all. I've found that in my childhoods colour books and tv shows that there was evidence that it used to be worse. But i have never experience that gingers, in my generation, suffers from more that other groups or targeted bullying. However, i have noticed that while the internet becomes more and more integrated, and cultural gaps been cut into non existence by social media and especially memes, especially American trends took off in Denmark. Ginger being one of them, "your mom" another. Five years ago, i remember reading an article in a major newspaper, that explained this behavior to the public, offending others mothers, and stated that it was a mainstream joke on the internet. The journalist had a surprisingly hard time finding ANY such humor in pre-internet danish culture.

They deserve to be smacked on the bottom, but not much more than that.
