These are a few examples of Mikkelson houses. They are absolutely everywhere in my city; I swear I've seen entire blocks of these things.
Simple enough in design that they can be "riced" a million different ways; the ones in the rich neighborhoods are often clad in a Colonial-esque trim and have had additions put on, but their humble roots are still visible.

Every house like these in Portugal has a 1-2m brick and cement wall for privacy between everyone's yards.
Our houses are also much closer to the street so that the backyard is bigger than the frontyard, although that might be because your frontyards are huge on account of the space you all have.

Many houses in America were built immediately after WWII. They were designed to be built up cheaply and quickly, to accommodate the influx of returning soldiers looking to start families (the baby boomers). Mikkelsons are small, but livable.
