I'm really sad I didn't care to study/know how to effectively study Mandarin when I was in a great situation to do so. I spent 5 years in a workforce comprised about 50% of Mandarin speakers and they were happy to help any of us Americans who wanted to learn. Some of us (myself included) grasped the language better than others.
I think I may have had a working vocabulary of about 400-500 words relevant to my job, but I could have done so much better if I'd actually focused and tried hard to learn. Truly a wasted opportunity.

Yes, but only because an independent Tibet would be a third world theocracy which could fall under India's sphere of influence (not good for China), and an independent Xinjiang might lead to Saudi money and mosques pumping into the country (not good for anyone).
Taiwan, on the other hand, is just a shitty island but is thriving on its own already, so in contrast, I would support a de jure independent Taiwan.
