Anyone on here watch this? Just finished season 2 and I'm mostly enjoying it but I can't get over how unbelievable it is that the main characters would stay loyal to Russia after living such a better life in America.
When they tried to act like the fake submarine plans was some kind of shockingly inhumane act by the US I couldn't believe they were serious. The wife especially is so senselessly fanatical that I can't get invested in her character at all. If I was the husband I would have knocked her out, tied her up, taken the kids and gone straight to the FBI.
Does the series ever fix this?
Jason Campbell
Woman or numale?
Cooper Kelly
my dad is watching it. I remember seeing the first episode and hating it.
Isaac Clark
>Does the series ever fix this? That's the whole point of the series, they make it pretty clear from the start! Maybe it becomes more obvious from season 3 onwards, but it always slowly moved in that direction.
Camden Jones
martha did literally nothing wrong
Luke Nguyen
Checked it out on a recommendation but tuned out around the time the dindu was cucking. Does it ever get better? I was just hoping for a decent period piece set in the 80s after the initial thrill and then subsequent disappointment of Halt and Catch Fire.
Logan Butler
i fuckin love this show. I just finished season 4. Stan is my man
Andrew Reed
>That's the whole point of the series That the characters, who are brilliant spies who devise genius schemes to get what they want, are simultaneously somehow too stupid to see the obvious truth that the Soviet Union is a pure evil shit-hole?
Xavier Sullivan
dude it's their home country, the goddamn motherland during the cold war. it's not that their stupid. that's the internal conflict of the show, ya tard.
Noah Wilson
There are even people now who believe in Communism, imagine being brought up in the Soviet Union being told how perfect it is and how evil the US is, plus being the type of people who would join the military/secret service - we're watching how long it takes to deprogram all that
Noah Mitchell
they kill off the black dude by the second season. the show gets better
Daniel Rogers
No, they grow more disillusioned each episode... Philip quicker than Elizabeth
Matthew Perry
It's a standard soap opera drama with a thin cold war setting painted on.
Aiden Morales
>dude it's their home country And? They talk many times about how terrible their lives in Russia were. Considering that, the fact that they blindly support it to the level where they are willing to murder many innocent people in America makes them seem completely disconnected from reality and insane.
Dylan Howard
you should read more history, buddy. some things might surprise you.
Evan Thomas
Tuan makes the russians look like tiny babies
Anthony Turner
this
Lucas Peterson
>No, they grow more disillusioned each episode... Philip quicker than Elizabeth Phillip is disillusioned in season 1 but just keeps doing his job. At the end of season 2, Elizabeth is willing to have her daughter turned into a murderous KGB agent, even after she criticized the church for "getting them while they're young" and seeing for herself how almost everyone who gets involved with "the cause" dies horribly. How is the viewer supposed to find this understandable on any level?
Caleb Bailey

Blake Sanders
this is bait
Luke Foster
elizabeth is a qt you will refrain from insulting her immediately
Luke Price
Nice might pick back up again. I kind of dug how they were tying the panthers and associated groups to the subversion but Im sick of interracial cucking on TV.
Tyler Collins
it was good for the first 3 seasons. s4 was dogshit and trying to force paige as a character is killing the show
Caleb King
paige is a cutey. how dare you
Jonathan Miller
leave paige alone
Jace Rodriguez
I mean, the two of them were indoctrinated for years since they were kids over how wonderful the glorious socialist revolution was and how it needs to be spread
And keep in mind, they spent most their life in America during the late 70s, this was a really fucking bad time for America on the world stage, and it seemed like the USSR was winning the Cold War since Afghanistan wasn't a disaster yet
Owen Walker
cute doesn't mean a good character or actor
Angel Sanders
LEAVE PAIGE ALONE
Christian Garcia
...
Jayden Hill
any kimmy fans?
Ryan Price
You're pretty materialistic. Some people pursue higher goals, like the liberation of mankind or the spiritual salvation of Christians. You've got your nose in the mud while others are building a better world.
Liam Myers
i can see her not being the greatest actress, but what is wrong with her character?
Connor Wilson
giv bully soviet gf
Nathan Gonzalez
OP you're not looking well throughout this thread here man, grow up
Christopher Nguyen
every scene with her is the exact same
>reading a book >parent comes in >le sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhh >paige honey whats wrong? >blahblahblahblah the same shit she whined about 20 minutes ago
Liam Bailey
The Americans is one of the very few shows that actually gets better and better as it progresses.
Benjamin Williams
>Some people pursue higher goals By murdering people, most of whom are non-combatants >while others are building a better world Where young children have to be carers for their parents who are dying of diphtheria, as Elizabeth did.
Are you some kind of antifa retard who actually thinks communism has merit?
Jack Morales
Best show on TV
Charles Watson
I think it's amping up like Breaking Bad did, and I personally like it more. Im almost caught up on season 5. Season Six will be the last :(
OP is a little bitch
Angel Roberts
The fuck are you talking about?
Landon Hughes
>implying the Soviet Union fought for anything remotely similar to those things
Jaxson Rivera
The ideal has obvious merit, even uber libertarian retards who spout the gibberish like "Communism is great in theory, but IRL DURR. What you're trying to say is that Russia's poverty and backwardness is due to Communism. The current regression under capitalism and Putin shows that maybe Russia has other problems.
Or perhaps you like that other argument that communism kills too many people. Don't compare death counts, because I think the genocide of native americans and enslavement of blacks are just as bad as the holodomor and great leap forward. Also, what's the point of comparing such obviously horrible atrocities? No ideaology has a monopoly on atrocities. I think capitalism exploits and kills far more people over time, but it doesn't matter, because Communists believe that capitalism will eventually give way to communism.
So basically, you're a bad troll and/or a Sup Forumstard. Get better ideals. And get better at trolling. Heh. Get gud kid.
Cooper Hughes
he's saying you look like an idiot. Personally I think you're baiting
William Roberts
The specific idealogy is irrelevant you bloody tampon. It's the dedication to a set of beliefs and values. Also communists aren't people.
Asher Hall
>The ideal has obvious merit lol, here's your dose of attention, you can leave now
Austin Gutierrez
In what way am I baiting? Please point out what I've said to make you think that.
Dominic Rivera
So you don't like the ideal of a perfect society where everyone gets everything they need and is free to pursue their labor for the advancement of themselves and their society?
I guess you hate heaven. And freedom. And every other ideal. Because there's nothing to take issue with the ideal. If you don't like the method, see my other arguments.
I'm guessing you did, and you felt own'd. Which is why you ad a butthurt meltdown
Eli Kelly
That you don't understand how they can't see that russia is shit and they should just fuck the kgb and live in America happily ever after
Adrian Martin
I agree OP. It's an excellent tv show but the basic premise is very flawed. It's pretty unrealistic to think there wouldn't be mass defections from an army of spies whose goal is to destroy the system that gave their children grew up in and gave them an objectively better life than they had.
Brody Butler
there were another couple of spies in the show that were gonna defect and got killed
Jayden Allen
jesus christ read some history books. This is also the entire fucking POINT of the show, they are becoming more and more disillusioned
Brayden Collins
>That you don't understand how they can't see that russia is shit and they should just fuck the kgb and live in America happily ever after How is it unreasonable to take issue with that? The show clearly states that both characters had horrible lives in Russia. They clearly have a much more comfortable life in America. The Russian government is ordering them to murder many people, the majority of whom are not military personnel. How is it reasonable that they continue to work for the KGB? The show itself presents almost no tangible justification, besides Elizabeth occasionally ranting vague nonsense about "the cause" and "consumerism".
Thomas Bennett
>Soviet Union >socialist ALT RIGHT faggots actually believe this...
Carson Bailey
There is a reason why agents are watched extremely closely for signs of disloyalty.
Jason Adams
see this
Blake Foster
>fake submarine plans was some kind of shockingly inhumane act by the US In Russia people think of Putin as an American puppet who kept silence about the true cause of the Kursk submarine tragedy on orders from the CIA.
Camden Butler
The overwhelming majority of Soviet spies were Westerners who were turned you retard. There are practically no spies who came to the West as adults. Read a history book yourself.
Christopher Phillips
so why the fuck would a westerner be turned? Using your own logic that's even less likely than sleeper KGB agents
Michael Brooks
They've been living in the US for 20 years when the show starts. more than enough time for any intelligent person to apply the preschool level of reasoning required to see what the right course of action to take is, both on a moral and practical level.
Human beings, especially ones with children to raise, don't go from a living hell to a comparative utopia and then choose to fight for the former.
Liam Clark
>move to Russia as a spy >have a pretty good life doing rad spy shit you're saying you would defect to Russia. You're saying the only thing keeping you loyal to your country is complacency.
You're not an actual patriot you're just a pussy.
Dominic Cooper
>so why the fuck would a westerner be turned? They lead an unhappy life and are tempted with the promise of utopian communism that they have never seen the nightmarish reality of first-hand.
Cameron Hughes
Money or
Asher Wood
>rad spy shit Have you actually watched the show? Their spy activities are fucking grim and soul-crushing.
Josiah Young
uuuu
Aiden Young
More like >move to Russia as a spy >witness first hand the dehumanizing power of the all encompassing Soviet regime >see the Russian middle class living in 3rd world squalor compared to the average American suburb >become more convinced than ever that communism must be defeated
Cooper Cruz

i dunno man if my home country gave me a wife like that and told me I had to fuck her i'd probably stay pretty loyal to it
Jonathan Miller
She's 19 though
Nathan Mitchell
>a wife like that A complete psycho with a plank body? No thanks. Phillip pulls all kind of pussy on his own, he can do better.
Asher Foster
Seth McFarlane in drag
Carter Price
>the only thing that matters is your quality of life Spotted the sub 90iq retard that can't see the bigger picture.
Dominic Reyes
>the bigger picture Dragging the rest of the world down into the poverty and misery of the Soviet Union? What a great, inspiring cause.
Kayden Lewis
Thats the point. How disillusioned we become in order to stay loyal to our country despite anything. True patriots
Caleb Rodriguez
I'm caught up with the show, and I like it overall, it's relatively consistent throughout. I thought the S2 finale was absolutely terrible though.
Carson Smith
>the bigger picture Dragging the whole middle east into chaos? What a great, inspiring cause. Dragging 2/3rds of the Gaullic population into slavery? What a great, inspiring cause. Dragging all of China into drug addiction and ruining the Indian economy? What a great, inspiring cause. etc. People prioritized the interests of their own countries/people over everyone else since forever and will probably continue to do so. The bigger picture is what's beneficial for your country, not the rest of the world.
Isaac Ross
For the longest time I thought Pastor Tim was going to be revealed to be KGB and that the whole thing with Paige was just a secret KGB operation to turn her into an agent
Jordan Barnes
Difference is that the US is a good place to live so people don't give a fuck if the government does bad stuff, whereas Soviet Russia was horrendous.
Ryan Gray
Yes and Russia after the collapse of the soviet union is such a better place to live. And again if you look at historical examples Rome for example was a better place to live than "Germany" when they sacked it, the UK was poorer than India/China when they conquered them, the Mongols burned down advanced cities while being nomads. What's your point?
Ryder Campbell
>Yes and Russia after the collapse of the soviet union is such a better place to live. How is that relevant to The Americans? The point is that Russia never offered the characters anything besides a hard, miserable life. They have no reason to be loyal to it, especially after they see for themselves how much better life is in the US.
Jordan Ortiz
Not the guy you're replying to but equating warriors conquering nations to the dynamic of the americans is a big stretch.
William Kelly
>none of the spies look Slavic you reminded me of this soviet joke about babushka asking just parachuted americin spy how are things in America. How do you know, granny? I'm not blind son, i can tell you are a negro! Soviet spies in nazi Germany were not slavic too for some reason. They were only hiring baltic/nordic types. Must be racism.
Matthew Clark
>How is that relevant to The Americans? It's relevant in the sense that losing the cold war was against Russian interests, the characters are working to prevent that. The point is that people will often choose to follow their own culture/nation/etc even if it does not offer them any tangible benefits. This is one of the things that makes us human, the ability to believe in abstract ideas. Would you betray your country if someone offered you a million dollars without anyone ever finding out?
Caleb Sullivan
Can someone explain to me what the point of the Nina arc was? Why did she decide to risk her life for such a stupid reason? Why did she give up? Had she lost all hope in the Soviet project? Did they just need to get rid of her character?
Luke Thompson
>losing the cold war was against Russian interests Irrelevant to Elizabeth and Phillip as they have lived in America all their adult lives and are raising their children there.
Logan Reed
>Would you betray your country if someone offered you a million dollars without anyone ever finding out? depends on what the betrayal was, if it was something small then yeah probably
Anthony Lopez
ITT: people who don't have ideals or any higher values
Kevin Richardson
t. easily indoctrinated retard
Christian Cruz
naah, I'm a conformist really, but I'm not that autistic to not be able to comprehend that someone cares about more things than their well-fed butt.
Alexander Green
"Muh country" is not "ideals or higher values". First you have to actually take a critical look at your country, and evaluate if it acts in the best interests of its citizens. Genuine values are derived from individual thought and reflection, not from propaganda and indoctrination.
Anthony Hughes
>When they tried to act like the fake submarine plans was some kind of shockingly inhumane act by the US I couldn't believe they were serious.
Kek that part was pretty hilarious to me as well. I only started watching the show within the last 6 months or so and am already caught up. I don't really have an issue with how much they are for the cause, since that is their job after all, and I don't think they really know what Russia is actually like when this is going on.
I know it's tv so it has to have tons of action to keep the drooling masses entertained, but I more have a problem with how many super important assassin type missions they have to go on. I'm no expert on espionage but I can guarantee you even high end spies like this in real life weren't involved in 1/100th of the shit this couple gets into.
Nathaniel Diaz
fuck off. Paige is such a fucking qt. I felt like a pedo during the earlier seasons but now that she's older I don't feel as bad. I would marry her at the drop of a hat.
Joseph Martin
>Some people pursue higher goals, like the liberation of mankind or the spiritual salvation of Christians
I thought the soviet union hated religion. Hell even in the show they hate all the christians. It's very clear.
Nathan Martin
This show has a habit of killing off anyone in a mixed raced relationship.
Jacob Green
I love the show but season 5 was literally nothing happens: the season.
