Eternia

With the 3rd issue of He-Man/Thundercats #3 coming out in 10 days, let's visit one of the most weird and amazing fictional worlds ever created, the center of the MOTU Universe, i.e. Eternia. In this thread we deal less with the main characters, and more about the incredible variety of the populations, races, species, creatures and locations of this fascinating world, where Fantasy and Sci/Fi meet and clash!

Couple of villains aside, villains look like shit.

Let's start with the location.
Eternia is located at the center of the MOTU Universe. A Universe different from our one, but connected with it, by a wormhole. In fact Marlena Glenn, He-Man's mother is came to Eternia from DC Earth through this way.

Eternia is the most ancient planet ever created. It's where the Starseed, a fragment of the original creation has been hidden inside the planet's core. It's the magical center of the MOTU Universe, and the source of Grayskull's power .

The planet it's outside the immense intergalactic Horde Empire. It had 5 moons.

...

So let's start with the various races:

First of all the gods of Eternia, and among them most important the Goddess.

In the first mini comics, before Prince Adam's introduction the Goddess was the person that chose brave young barbarian tribesman named He-Man as her champion, giving him the weapons to fight the forces of darkness.

Later in the Filmation cartoon and the 200X reboot, the Goddess has been lef out. Only to return in the DC comics. In these the Goddess, has been revealed to have a triad nature, represented by Serpos with the snake as totem, and worshiped by the First Ones a.k.a the Snake Men, Zoar with the falcon as totem, worshiped by the later Eternians, and Horokoth the destroyer of the Universe who has the bat as totem, and being worshiped by the Horde.

When Teela took the place of her mother as the High Priestess of the Goddess, she transformed to the Sorceress of Serpos with her look resembling obviously the original Goddess from the mini comics.

The next Eternian divinity is Moss Man. The nature god of Eternia, protector of the plant life.

Moss Man is one of the most powerful entities in the MOTU universe and an ally to He-Man.

Next is Evilseed.

This is the other Eternian nature god. But unlike Moss Man who is about the balance in the nature, Evil Seed wants the dominion of the plant life upon any other on Eternia.

Evilseed is extremely powerful, to the point that it was needed an alliance between He-Man and Skeletor to defeat him.

Another Eternian god is Procrustus.

When Hordak tried with the spell of Seperation, to split Eternia in half in order to reach the Starseed at the planet's core, Procrustus with his four arms hold the planet together, saving it from total devastation. Since then he remains at planet's inner world, guarding it to avoid that such destruction being repeated.

Now they are coming the various creatures and species, mythological, prehistoric, alien or so, that live on Eternia.

First of all the Dragons.

There are various species of Eternian dragons. Regular dragons, Serpinataurs, sea dragons, sand dragons etc. Most of them don't have particular intelligence...

But there is a particular race that are intelligent, they can speak, and are also magic users as well. The Dragons of Darksmoke, which reign is deep in the Ice Mountains. Their leader Granamyr the wisest and oldest of all dragons, is one of the most powerful beings on Eternia, with a magic that rival Grayskull's power. Originally Granamyr despised the human race. But when he met He-Man, he started to change his mind.

His favourite quote:
"Granamyr doesn't fight humans. Granamyr wins."

And let's not forget Skeletor's pet dragon!

whats the deal with turbodactyl?

is there a readable version of that?

Ok.

Here coming the (Pr)eternian dinosaurs!

The dinosaurs have been part of the Eternian animal life for millions of years. They were still present during King Grayskull's time. The Snake Men captured some of them and turned them to their battle steeds. But when Hordak invaded Eternia, he unleashed a technorganic virus in order to infect the animals. Dinos had the worse, and many of them transformed to bionic creatures. So we had Bionatops..

Tyrantisaurus. The tyrantosaurs have been the steeds of Hsss, King of the Snake Men and his generals.

Turbodactyl was a tecnorganic virus infected pterosaur. It was also used as a steed by the Snake Men, but one turbodactyl, became He-Man's ancestor, He-Ro (son and heir of King Grayskull) fellow companion. When Adam's son Dare also visited Eternia's past like hie father did, few decades earlier, he met He-Ro and his Turbodactyl.

The Eternian dinosaurs eventually died out, because of the technorganic virus. There have been several other species like gigantisaur or battle bones.

Thouh some of them followed the Snake Men's fate and imprisonment at Subternia's ice tomb, after King Hsss's sacrilege towards the Goddess. When the Snake Men eventually returned, and later allied with He-Man, the preternian dinos that have been with them, they also returned. So Eternia has been repopulated with dinos once more!

I'm enjoying this thread OP, keep posting

For conclude with the Eternian prehistoric creatures, a mention to Elodons, the Eternian mastodons with the strange twisted tusks and the sabertooth cats (one of them tried to eat little Cringer before Adam saved hiim).

And we continue with Eternian's mythological and exotic/alien species.

Starting with the Ice Hacker. A savage beast that lives in Ice Mountains, and which He-Man encounter during his quest to the Dragon's Realm at Darksmoke.

Another very common beast on Eternia is the Manticore. It appeared in the first mini comics, but also in the Filmation cartoon and the Uk MOTU books.

Bump, best thread in the sea of shit every weekend brings in.

This
Interesting thread'

Next entrance. The Griffins. The Griffins are the creatures that Beatman uses for Skeletor's air support, sneak attacks, and escaping when necessary.

Remaining to Bestman's enslaved creatures, we have the Gargoyles. Beastman can controll them mentally and use them as spies.

Then we have the Glorm.

Glorm is a four armed Wendigo-like creature that prefers to feed on human flesh. One of them was slained by He-Man during his first adventures.

Enter the Shadow Beasts.

The Shadow Beasts live deep in Eternia's Dark Hemisphere, at Crystal Sea.

Their savegery has been such a legend, that Skeletor ordered Beastman to capture and mind controll an army of them, against Eternos and Castle Grayskull. But his plan was ruined by the only weakness that these beasts have...their fear for the light.

Continue our journey on Eternia, we meet the giant bugs and arthropods. A Fantasy world like Eternia couldn't do without them, no?

He-Man fought against giant centipedes...

...but the most dangerous of all is the giant bionic spider called Spydor. He-Man killed it after an epic fight, during the Eternity War.

Then we have the Furlongs, Eternia's gigantic wild dogs.

The Furlongs originally were depicted as giant wild dogs. In the Filmation cartoon though they changed their look to some kind of horned and crested hyaena like creatures

And following the Unicorns. Among them, the most memorable is Teela's golden unicorn, named Charger. Charger has been Teela's faithful companion in the mini comics, but he was never made an appearance in the cartoons, probably for avoid confusion with the later She-Ra's alicorn Swiftwind.

...

But Charger returned briefly, in the pages of the DC MOTU comic few years ago, leading Teela in battle once more.

So this is Teela's almost forgotten steed, Charger.

Then they are the flying horses. Eternia's flying horses have breed with unicorns. Adora's alicorn Swiftwind seems to be such a hybrid.

This is a tactril. It's a strange combination between a dragon and a horse. Apparently they can be used as flying steeds like He-Man did.

The most interesting thing though is that they are identical to Blackstar's Warlock! And the question remains, did John Blackstar ended on Eternia, but during a different time period from He-Man's time?

And ending our tour to Eternia's creatures and with a bit of marine life. First of all the Kraken.

Then the eternian giant octopus.

>tfw own majority of those figures despite being non-subbed cherry picker
/toy/ represent. It's my favorite line. Got the Power Con Granamyr coming and it will be the center of my collection.

I had this toy, I may be misremembering but wasn't it also mountable for the toy version?

Of course the Eternian waters are pretty hostile, because of Mer-Man.

Who has his own monstrous pet fish.

Indeed the Spydor toy was used as mount by Skeletor.

...

...

And so that's it for the Eternia's creatures and animals. Then we procee withe the various Eternian populations, races, tribes and kingdoms.

Yes.

And before we proceed a bit of Eternia's geography would be needed.

Map of Eternia.

And the map of Eternia's Inner World, the so called Subternia.

How much of this was Scott Neitlich's fanfic turning canon?

I forgot two other extremely important Eternian species: The Green Tigors and the Dylinxes, the cat species of whicn Battle Cat and Panthor belong to respectively.

So let's begin now with the various Eternian races.

First of all the Avions. They are avian humanoids the "bird people" of Eternia. Stratos, one of the oldest members of the Masters, is their King.

The female Avions are much as warriors as the male ones. Like Stratos's sister, Hawke.

...is that a Zelda version of Skeletor?

Stratos's people lives at the Kingdom of Avion, ine the Mystic Mountains. Thi city almost built among the clouds, is one of the many wonders of Eternia. Avion has been under siege by Skeletor's forces many times, because of the mysticla powerful artifacts that are hidden there.

Stratos has a human wife though named Delora. As human Delora didn't have flying powers, but the Avionian scientists invented a way that allowed her to fly. So she became the Queen of Avion.

> The Power of Grayskull never becomes mine.

Um..... He's lying right? Duping the poor sap he's telling this too cause he so did get it in one universe.

Next we have the Adreenids, one of the insectoid races of Eternia. They live in Adreenos an impenetrable fortress deep in the Mystic Mountains. They are ruled by a Queen. Buzz-Off one of the Masters, is an Adreenid general. Adreenids and Avionians are not going always very well between them. Thay have a competition, and once they arrived close to war. But they eventually become allies when they realized that both have been manipulated by Skeletor.

Skeletor many times got the power of Grayskull. The problem is that he never was able to hold it long enough. Most recently in the He-Man?Thundercats crossover. Skelly kicked Mumm-Ra's ass, he stole the Power of Adam letting him seriously wounded. Too close to the total victory. Then Lion-O came in...

Another insectoid races are the Tycons. Unlike Adreenids, Tycons are dangerous and attack in groups other Eternian populations, stealing their resources and murdering them. Stratos and Hawke's parents killed during a Tycons's raid.

The last insectoid people are the Arachnars. These spider looking terryfing creatures, built the first empire on Eternia, millions of years before the Snake Men have their own. They almost extinct, except one. Webstor, one of Skeletor's Evil Warriors, that lived on Snake Mountain, long before Skeletor made it his home.

And bit of fun for MOTU's original "Spider-Man", lol.

The Giants.

Eternia's most powerful Giants lived in prehistoric times. The most fierce was Megator. He-Man faced him, when he went back in time using the Cosmic Key, and he kicked Megator's ass.

>no live action Skeletor from the movie

Megator's sworn enemy was another Giant, Tytus. Tytus was King Grayskull's ally and it was this Giant that helped him to built Castle Grayskull. He died trying to stop Megator, during the Battle of the Three Towers.

Mattel doesn't have the copyrights from the film, so they couldn't use movie Skeletor. Actually they can't even do an action figure of him.

It's pretty interesting how much they kept messing around with Stratos.

First off he was originally going to be an Evil Warrior, being listed as such in pre-production material and even pictured among the evil warriors in some early licensed art (probably licensed from early drafts).

Once they had him firmly in the good guy camp he was included in the Michael Halperin story bible which was commissioned to set the lore of the setting straight for future adaptions. In that one it is stated he has a human wife called Delora, a kind of across the boundries romance. Based on this, someone (I think it may have been halperin himself) wrote the minicomic "Siege of Avion" which showcases both Delora (as a human) and the staff of Avion which grants the bird people their powers.

Now the MOTU cartoon produced by Filmation generally followed the Halperin story, but had some weird deviations. One of those differences was that when they did an episode with Delora, she was first off portrayed as a bird-woman, not a human, and second she was Stratos' sister instead of his wife. I'm not sure it was ever explained why this happened, but I guess either crossed wires or Filmation was trying to hide a potential romantic relationship in their constant zeal for wholesome entertainment.

Delora's character model was then reused in a different episode for an unrelated female Avionian called Hawk, who betrayed Stratos but made amends. So there's two Avion ladies in Filmation with the exact same character model.

MYP for some reason picked Hawk (now called Hawke) for their cartoon revamp of MOTU in 2002, and didn't mention or feature Delora at all.

As a side note, in the UK storybooks Delora appears as a female human who has been given special equipment by Stratos so she can soar the skies with him, an interesting compromise.

The most well known Giants from He-Man's Era are Azdar, Belzar, and Chadzar. They first appeared in the MYP cartoon as independent villains against Buzz-Off. Later they become members of Skeletor's Council of Evil.

The Goblins.

The Goblins are not originated from Eternia. They are coming from planet Venatar. Unlike the goblins we know from other Fantasy franchises, the Goblins of Eternia are using a big variety of high tech weapons, alongside the traditional swords and axes. MOTU is the perfect mix of Fantasy and Sci/Fi after all.

The Goblins are leaded by General Tataran. Tataran is an excellent tactician, and he managed to turn the Goblins to one of the most formidable fighting forces on Eternia. Tataran and his Goblins on Eternia have been mercenaries, and their army hired by Skeletor in one of his many attempts of siege of the city of Eternos. Tataran has proven to be one of the most dangerous adversaries that the Eternians have ever faced.

can anyone who has the 2 CBR files for the Minicomics collection do me a huge favor and upload them to MEGA or something, as the only download links in the archives I can find are on really crappy sites that would take 5-6 hours to download each part, which is unacceptable(seriously why do people even use half the file upload sites they use, most of them are just plain awful compared to MEGA in all respects)

Among the other Eternian inhabitants we have:

Orcs.

Trolls.

Dwarves. And Gnolls

Elves (or Tree People as the Eternians call them).

The feline Quadians with their King Carnivus.

The Bat-like Speleans and their Lord Dactys. Guardians of the Gates to Subternia.

am i blind or am i not seeing Etheria? This map shows different dimensions, so why not Etheria?

Give a better look far right. You will see Eternia as connected with various wormholes to the other parts of the MOTU Universe. Also you can notice the dimensional gates towards Despondos, the dimension that Etheria is located, and towards Infinita, the dimension from where the people of Gar (with whom Keldor/Skeletor is related from his mother Saryn's part) came from, to Eternia, after their world wa s destroyed.

I'm not sure what the current adaptations of MotU are with Etheria, but in the original cartoons, Etheria is in another dimension from Eternia.

>did John Blackstar ended on Eternia, but during a different time period from He-Man's time?

never thought of that but its a cooler explanation than cheap ass animation!

Etheria is still in another dimension called Despondos, which is the dimension that Hordak was banished after his defeat from King Grayskull on Eternia. Hordak conquered Etheria after his arrival at Despondos.

According to a fan theory, that the Earth astronaut John Blackstar has been sent to find Marlena Glenn after she vanished. Like her, he ended on Eternia, but a thousand years before Marlena's arrival on the planet.

We continue the Eternian folk. Next one: the Calligars. One of the 3 reptilian races of Eternia. They are leaded by Ceratus who is the older brother of Whiplash, one of Skeletor's Evil Warriors.

Since there is not much time left, i will end this small tour on Eternia with the map of the important fortress of Eternia and of the entire MOTU franchise. I' m speaking of course of Castle Grayskull.

There are too many species, races, locations etc on Eternia, and we would need 10 threads to cover them all. So better stop here. I hope that you enjoyed this.

And don't forget to pick up the third issue of He-Man/Thundercats crossover in 10 days from now.

At Subternia's map are left out the Six Circles of Subternia, from the DC's MOTU comic "What lies within" story arc the interdimensional crossroads that lead on the Star Seed, which is visible at the center of the map. But Procrustus is there with his 4 arms holding the planet together.
