Let's talk about the rumored back-to-basics relaunch of Marvel. Are you looking forward to the possibility? What are your hopes should the rumor be true?
In an era where Marvel is actively pursuing a very vocal base that doesn't really buy comics, is this going to hurt them from a publicity standpoint with these people? We've already got one of these freakouts from Marvel's new target audience in the vid below, where he's lamenting the return to more traditional storytelling because "the comics are just there for Disney to dry run movie ideas these days."
I'm pretty sure he meant conservative in the literal term, as in "not taking risks", not political.
Like I love Rebirth but at the end of the day it's nostalgia pandering and the fact that I like that scares me.
Owen Reed
Shill your video somewhere else, OP
William Powell
>pandering There's that word again. In any other business, it's called "customer service." It's listening to what your actual paying customers want in a product and providing it. It's good business and what every successful company does. But here it's clearly pandering because we're not allowing the company itself to tell us what we're supposed to think, like, and buy. Which is what Marvel has been trying to do for the past decade, what Apple was doing for a while while their shares started tanking, etc.
Oliver Phillips
So it scares you liking traditional comic book stories? Man, thats even scarier
Eli Ramirez
>yfw there are creators actually called Pander
Hunter Lee
I like things that are new while still paying respect to characters
Annihaltion, Planet Hulk, and Sinsestro Corps will always be God tier for that
Adam Evans
He didn't mean it politically user
John Edwards
OP here. Jesus, are you fuckers so caught up in all the Sup Forums bullshit it's immediately what comes to mind? Of course he's not talking politically. Spencer's been shitting on the back-to-basics approach DC did with Rebirth for months, which is why it's hilarious Marvel is rumored to be doing the same soon.
Joseph Cruz
Sorry I'm fucking paranoid these days, /lol/ gets triggered so fucking easily and way too many threads get derailed
Carson Harris
>Like I love Rebirth but at the end of the day it's nostalgia pandering and the fact that I like that scares me. They did a bunch of novel stuff that didn't work and took the appropriate step back to bring everyone back on board, get the time to reassess things and then move forward with something that'll hopefully be more well received.
Taking a step back to a solid foundation isn't a bad thing if you were on shaky ground before - or in Marvel's case already plummeting at terminal velocity towards the ground.
Ethan Sanchez
>mobileposter Wew
Noah Thompson
I'm sorta hoping for a comics crash at this point
I dunno why, would just be funny
Christian Lee
It's the audience Marvel has targetted these days. Everything has to be Sup Forums related in some way even though your post says nothing about it and talks about just returning to traditional storytelling.
Mason Sullivan
>In any other business, it's called "customer service." No, I'm pretty sure it's called pandering in film, television, literature, etc. Don't confuse media with your part time job.
Jacob Young
this. I want to see comic book industry burn The comics the comics are on fire We don't need the water So let the motherfucker BURN BURN MOTHERFUCKER
Lucas Nguyen
I've been saying this would happen. It's like what Pepsi did in the 90s when they fucked up their formula and then brought back the old Pepsi.
I think it will work as a business strategy for them. They've alienated so many people they now have a chance to get customers back by simply reverting their stupid changes. It could be a win if Marvel plays it cards rights... usually it doesn't though.
We'll see.
Noah Phillips
>of course he's not talking politically
back when he said it Sup Forums was filled with triggered spergs that thought he was talking politically
Bentley Peterson
Whoever made that picture must have serious mental issues. How is a made up rumour taken this seriously? In any case, Spencer is right that a constant going back to the status quo is shit and the cancer of comics. Not saying i like his writing, btw.
Jaxon Garcia
Does marvel have a basics to go back to?
What would be the basics we are talking about? 80s avengers and claremont x-men? silver surfer & captain marvel? Bendis Avengers? There was nothing basic in the last 20 years of x-men, their status quo changed every 2 years.
I don't think they have a solid formula to return to that isn't obscure as hell or spider man
marvel needs to completely revamp their contracts. nobody wants to work at them because indies are giving them way more money and the marvel work enviroment seems to be completely toxic. there wasn't a big name at marvel that didn't half ass their work just to get a quick buck
William Hill
Nice fanfiction. If nobody wants to work for them its weird that they have all those writers and artists. Almost as if you were making shit up.
Caleb Walker
how many big names do they have left?
Mason Taylor
>e end of the day it's nostalgia pandering
People keep saying this but nothing has really changed from the New 52. Superman is arguably less nostalgic now because he isn't in Metropolis and his family dynamics are completely different
Brody Diaz
Behold! Marvel's masterpiece of art and storytelling
Julian Gray
That A listers headline is about Creators
Nathan Lopez
>/lol/ gets triggered so fucking easily
Is this what you have to tell yourself these days?
Alexander Bell
You don't need big names when you're putting out Eisner award winning material like Squirrel Girl and instant classics that touch the hearts of modern audiences like Hellcat, Mockingbird, Mosaic and Moon Girl.
Cameron Clark
It won't work. The "Pandering" is just one of the many problems that fans have with Marvel. If they bring back all the A listers and charge $4.99 for issue 1 then expect the exact same sales collapse as the last few relaunches
Angel Murphy
...
Evan Foster
You know what would be nice?
Acknowledgement of things other than a handful of characters. Like, why are there so many X-Men missing? Why do we need to have every new legacy character guest star in every other book? Just make the universe feel big again.
Jaxson Jenkins
Fuck off
Samuel Powell
AHHH NON HOUSE STYLE ART
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Hunter Moore
>Click video. >Talking about the comics but using the movie studio logo, movie stills and movie fan art the entire vid. >It's important for Marvel to continue what they're doing and pushing the messages they're pushing because Based Disney just needs the comics for movie ideas. Truly the audience nuMarvel deserves.
Noah Smith
Nothing wrong with moon girl.
Jose Gray
So what if they're going less political, if they have the same writers quality isn't gonna improve at all. They need to let go of Benis.
Michael Ward
You cleary don't read marvel if you think all their comics look like that. 4 bad books doesnt mean that their other 30 books look bad. And if you dont read marvel why do you think your uninformed opiniĆ³n matters?
Christian Rodriguez
It's not like DC fired all the DCYou writers.
Jacob Roberts
Except the way she dresses...
Isaac Garcia
I swear, I don't get why Bendis still has such good standing. I don't know whether I'm more disappointed in Marvel giving him so much top billing or his fans that who never point their fingers at him.
Adrian Williams
You clearly are a faggot marvel shill underpaid intern. Otherwise HOW cucked can you be?
Daniel Cox
>Butthurt marveldrone detected HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Hunter Miller
>instant classics that touch the hearts of modern audiences like Hellcat, Mockingbird, Mosaic and Moon Girl.
Doesn't a toyline comic outsell those?
Liam Carter
Her costume isnt good but her comic actually is. Pretty good character, shes actually pretty flawed and suffers a lot because she has trouble communicating with others
Isaac Green
>Unironically says HUURR DURRR
What a fucking idiot.
Jaxson Walker
Didn't he blame Mockingbird backlash on Rebirths empowered conservative readers?
Brandon Collins
I don't know why Slott is still on Spider-Man. His time is clearly up and they need an A list writer to bring some dignity back to the title
Caleb Watson
>Pretty good character Your standards of a good character must be very low
Gabriel Taylor
Cucked? Butthurt? Why? I was making a logical point. Why do you people insist that all marvel books look like hellcat when it isn't true? Or more important why are you people so interested in discussing a company you know nothing about and dont read? I dont think all marvel books are great, they have plenty of shit, i just dont think its all of it.
James Roberts
As long as he keeps selling, they have little reason to pull him off.
Jaxson Foster
Why Shes a defined kid character that is developing and is not constantly going in circles like kamala or Damian. Its weird seeing a female supeheroe that young acting like a bitch. Shes fun and original, everything that riri williams isn't.
Dominic Rivera
He was pretty upset those damn MRAs didn't buy Mockingbird, yes.
Samuel Anderson
As sales show, no one actually reads Moon Girl. People are just mad at how Marvel markets her ("Smartest character ever, smarter than all those smart white males you love")
Caleb Brown
Forgot pic.
Ian Murphy
>someone defending numarvel Because it is true, you cuckmongling dickfaggot It must be some elaborate trolling. Nobody could be dumb this much.
Jose Hernandez
Should Spider-Man really be selling so low? Flash is more popular right now
Easton Gomez
She's not fun, she's literally a replacement of legacy character, and she's boring
Evan White
Riri really is the worst character I've ever seen. Does she have any flaws at all yet?
Justin Brown
Her sales and marketing matter little to me, i like her book. I started reading before they marketed her as the smartest one there is (she didn't start like that) and shes a fine character. Who is she replacing? Kirby's moon boy wasn't a legacy character.
Gavin Rogers
>That video.
I'll save you all 13 minuets.
>REEEEE! STOP HATING THE NEW COMICS BECAUSE THEY ARE HELPING THE MUH MOVIES!
Aiden Brown
It's been lower.
Ryder Morris
God knows, why would anyone read bendis?
Eli Ross
she replaces moon boy. she is called moon girl, in case you didn't notice. it's funny that marvel replaced a monkey with a black girl. congrats!
David Parker
Well, you're probably going to be happy to know that the book is cancelled around issue 16.
Luis Taylor
Its not true, ultimates2, Daredevil, avengers or uncanny xmen are all different than hellcat to give an example. You seem mad, how am i trolling? Im trying to generate discussion and you insist on talking shit about stuff you don't read.
Jonathan Hall
They're different. But they're still all bad. Well Daredevil isn't "bad" but it sure as shit isn't good either
Jaxon Wood
are all also crap, which you forgot to mention. Ewing, Waid, Soule and Bunn are meh writers. And only Avengers have good art.
You must be really dumb then. I mean, defending current marvel is really retarded
Angel Perez
Moon boy hasnt been in comics for years. I loved kirbys book (i actually read it) but it had nothing to do with lunella. They just share names, she's not her legacy. Sauce? Lastest solicits still had her book and there was no anouncement.
Christian Kelly
>she's not her legacy. really? I mean, she's a chimp
the latest solicits give a "final issue" vibe.
Ethan Wood
user had said that all marvel books had shit art like hellcat, i just pointed out that it wasn't true. Writing is another matter. I like those books, but tastes are different.
Samuel Foster
Ill ignore that racist commentary. Its the end of the arc, don't make shit up.
Christian Price
They are trolls that only shit on certain books to spread their autism.
Or the just don't read a lot of books.
Take Moon Knight, for example: some pretty neat art in there, putting the writing aside. Ans it's not even a house style.
Nova is pretty good to, even for a simple drawn art.
Occupy Avengers has some solid more in house art, but lol crappy tittle. So noone reads it.
My point is, even if you don't like less traditional looking comics, there are comics with nice art. And of course, you can also reado books with pretty good non house styled art. And they're usually fitting the tittle mood.
But trolls are going to troll.
Thomas Martinez
>user had said that all marvel books had shit art like hellcat
>Behold! Marvel's masterpiece of art and storytelling
Stop embarrassing yourself further
Henry Roberts
Gonna deport your ass, Juanita.
ICE rolling down the street.
Henry Sanchez
I always knew that marvelfags were humorless cunts, but it's nice to know how fragile they are
Someone makes fun, and the defense mode is instantly activated
Parker Reed
You seem so sad
Zachary White
Exactly, thanks. I guess expecting serious discussion outside of storytimes is stupid, nobody reads comics
Carson Gomez
Funny, that's exactly what I think about you.
Leo Taylor
The only stupid thing is you thinking that someone would treat you seriously, after defending current state of marvel. People who are not shills know that marvel is doing bad, REAL bad. Some of them want marvel to be good again, others enjoy taking shots at marvel. But neither of them would go to great lengths defending their company, they way you did, over funny picture
Ian Thompson
Why are you still talking about things you dont know Look how you talk about "marvel" in general, you can't say anything particular because all you see are outrage pages posted on Sup Forums. You are so filled with hate its getting boring. I dont care about your general feelings about the company, i don't say its perfect, i just enjoy some books, like a lot of other people do. Get off Sup Forums for a while, read a little, calm yourself down.
Ryan Taylor
Yeah, yeah. Whatever.
I wonder wheb are you trolls going to throw Image into your annoying pointless wars.
Still waiting.
Matthew Green
Marvel in general is very decompressed 20 pages of adverts for movies or tv shows. The books are boring real boring. I'm not sorry that I triggered you, and I don't have to prove anything.
I used to be a massive X-fags, now I can't stand looking at the X-Men, after what marvel did to them with sterilization and Land's porn tracing art. Power Man & Iron Fist was a massive disappointment, and Kamala became stale and boring.
Again, I don't need to prove any cred. Maybe it's you who need to get off my lawn with your shitty attempt at defending this garbage
Joseph Hernandez
Occupy is getting Gabriel Hernandez Walta and it'll suck if he actually only gets to draw like 2 issues.
also Mike del Mundo is on the damn Avengers book if you want wild art
Carter Lee
So much rage
Caleb Miller
She's a nigger
David Rivera
So much shitpost I'm done, you can keep moving the goalposts. I'd rather be in a different thread
Caleb Nguyen
Spencer is a hypocritical little bitch.
Dylan Gomez
>Amazon Best Sellers >Publishers >DC
Of course you'll have only DC there.
Jace Jackson
>Planet Hulk respecting the character in anyway shape or form
Ryder Hall
I know, and I'm actually looking forward Walta's art. But current artist is crazy good and prety standard looking, which was why I mentioned him.
I like Del Mundo too, but for some reasin I have some issues with his work in Avengers. Didn't have a problem withhis busy art in Weirdword, but I do now, sonehow. Maybe it's a bit too. But damn those colors... I could paint a wall in my house with those colors and shapes.
Jose Wood
We're TOLD she's unsociable and severely introverted but she has no problem at all making friends with other superheroes, if CWII and cross-overs are any indication.
Horrible comics are almost cathartic. I'm really enjoying Champions because it's so mind-numbingly fucking retarded.
Christian Price
>Are you looking forward to the possibility? I am looking forward to hearing about the details before I can get excited or not. If it's going to be the same writers and editors making movie pitches and driving books towards the next even or movie-related tie in but with Steve and Tony then it won't be much of difference
>In an era where Marvel is actively pursuing a very vocal base that doesn't really buy comics
But they are buying comics, just not physically at comic book stores or physical single issues.
Noah Thompson
So you guys always post the same 5 twitter stuff from this guy. Now that he's been proven wring by he's own bosses, where are the twitts from him deluding himself about this decision?
Ayden Campbell
If you want to talk just about comics we have
1) Walking Dead 2) Siege 3) Complete Peanuts 4) Saga 5) 5 Minute Marvel Stories 6) Wonder Woman 7) Walking Dead 9) Batman Detective Comics 10) Nightwing
Don't try to defend Marvel or anything, just be correct about it
Jason Morris
suuuuuuuuuuuuure they do
Ryder Allen
>Nightwing Everything's coming up Dick!
Henry Campbell
>nostalgia pandering better than tumblr pandering
Brayden Carter
solid characterization? Going through my old X-Men digests the best period (John Byrne?) was when they dedicated a some space to just showing the characters interacting as people. Going shopping, hanging out, etc. Gives the stories room to breathe and helps to establish characters as likable.
Colton Hall
From a business stand-point, in this age of super heroes becoming increasingly popular and making tons of cash in theaters it's pretty stupid to try and get experimental with the comic books and not take advantage of the mainstream knowledge of the average person to further up your sales.
I'd like to make it clear I'm not saying full-MCU shilling is what they should do, nor to sacrifice writing and stories in order to keep synergy intact, but having familiar faces starring the main books should be a given. Like having Steve Rogers in Captain America, not Falcon, having Peter Parker in Spider-Man being Spider-Man not discount Tony Stark, give it solid creative teams and consistent writing and if there is change then do it in a form that feels organic within the story context, not just throw a literally who nigress and call her Iron Man for the sake of it.
Sebastian Foster
>having Peter Parker in Spider-Man being Spider-Man not discount Tony Stark
