Ghost in the Shell

This is going to be a cult classic, isn't it?

>Amazing aesthetics and visuals
>Story is completely servicable; expected plotholes out the ass but found something that blended the best parts of past GiTS iterations
>Still has philosophical themes, just more subtle
>Don't send a rabbit to kill a fox
>Say something nice
>Snak- Saito vs a fucking Nip Mi-24
>Remix of the 1995 intro song at the end
>wtf I love softcore scarjo torture porn scenes now???

Why did Sup Forums and the rest of the world shit on this movie? It was a solid 7/10, and I'd personally give it an 8/10 just because I was so surprised that it didn't butcher things like Kuze or Motoko's past.

>Amazing aesthetics and visuals

Shot on digital, so no.

probably. The fucking sjw "white washing" controversy shrouded the entire release and people didn't go to see it. It was a lot better than I expected.

>cult classic
Literally not a thing anymore

It's actually funny, the "whitewashing" turns out to be caused by the ebil corporation which is in line with liberal views, but people with no real interest in the series still fucking screamed over it.

>Muh film

Regardless this movie will be remembered much more fondly than it was originally received

what is it about her skin in this film? it's too perfect.

The original, and good, movie still exists, so just watch that one

Scarjo is best major

>Amazing aesthetics and visuals
lol

>Implying I haven't watched the original movie multiple times
>Implying I haven't seen all of the past iterations
Maybe this is why it was received poorly. Maybe you need to have the background information to truly appreciate how well this movie blends and explains somethings in previous series' that were left open.

This movie was 15 lbs away from being decent.

The new movie stands in direct contrast to everything the original film represented re: transhumanism and the nature of the soul

You didn't understand 1995 GitS if you think they are in any way comparable

>is going to be a cult classic
the original franchise is already a cult classic, this was an average cash grab adaption with multiple rehashed stories meshed together to appeal to as many as possible whilst never actually trying to improve or respect the original or further the franchise

Cus it takes a couple of years.
modern movies like
>fantastic mr fox
>Frances ha
>short term 12
> in Bruges
>the raid
>snowpiercer

All have cult potential

How does it directly contrast transhumanism and the nature of the soul?

That was the funny thing about this entire thing, I liked it really much and it felt different/refreshing enough to be a decent to good movie. I actually hope they do a sequel and keep the story and some of the developments in check. I get that for the sake of film you need to cut some stuff or speed it up.

If you think this movie wasn't better than any of the previous iterations besides the original movie, you're delusional.

The anime films aready are.

This was a failure of a mainstream remake

in the original film the Major is a nobody; she's one of many of that model of shell, she even sees it used as a mannequin in the windows of general stores. She's not special, she's trying to find self-meaning and identity in a world where she is literally a formless ghost in a generic shell, and in joining with the Puppet Master the human soul and machine unite to become something greater than the sum of their parts, it's a very positive take on transhumanism

in the new one she's the SUPER DUPEREST SPECIAL PROTOTYPE and the only full-cyborg in the world, and that makes her important to Kuze who's the broken prototype and she rejects joining with him because I AM HUMAN MY SOUL IS SPECIAL I WILL NEVER GIVE UP MY HUMANITY

>amazing aesthetics and visuals
settle down
>story blended best parts of old GiTS
the best parts of the movie were the totally original ones. Everything recycled felt like a shittier version of what came before. The Puppetmaster was botched, the garbageman plot was botched, they fucked up all of the old iconic stuff
>philosophical
everyone's trying to be philosophical now, this movie said nothing worth remembering
>Scarjo
was a horrible miscast

5.5/10 movie. Also Mamoru Oshii's career peaked with The Red Spectacles.

Netflix or HBO should invest in a Darker than Black series if Hollywood wants to adapt anime.

CAST:
>Hei
Ludi Lin
>Huang
Chris Bauer
>Yin
Anya Taylor-Joy
>Kirihara
Karen Fukuhara
>November 11
Michael Fassbender

Scarjo killed the movie for me. She's so flat and boring and dull, and not in the cool, smooth, confident way the major is in everything else.

>story is completely serviceable

What a fucking joke

Watching this movie was physically painful

No Valerian might be not as much as Fifth Element but a bit

>Rejects joining with him
She rejects leaving with him to muh network. I thought some sort of merger was implied with the eyes and the whole "I'll be a part of your ghost" lines.

Why do you think you need to abandon humanity to "evolve"?

>Implying Scarjo doesn't give off the perfect weird autist vibes for the Major
Isn't she basically a loli killing machine? It's only been a year since she was arrested

Puppetmaster wasn't really a thing in this, why do you think the garbageman scene was botched?

There was no real reason to give the garbageman a fake background since he was just a trigger-finger bio-drone. Oshii's take was more interesting, the guy still functioned like a sane human being, only with a fake backstory he was convinced that he was doing something innocuous when he was actually fucking with the police. That's much more interesting than a guy being brainjacked and made to fire a machine-gun. In Oshii's one it seems to be suggested that some of the original guy was still there despite the fake memories since he couldn't be compelled to do something totally nuts like start shooting at cops, in the new movie hackers can just turn anybody they want into a puppet and start playing GTA with them.

best kerberos film by FAR

>>Amazing aesthetics and visuals
Are you fucking blind?

Easily, all of the movies are GOAT though.

Kerberos channeling Suzuki > Kerberos channeling Kitano > Kerberos preemptively channeling Refn

This is perhaps the most waifu-worthy Scarjo has ever been.

>mishmash of SAC and the first movie to appeal to the normies
>still bombs
#notmyGITS

Tried to watch this the other day after watching BR2049 and wanting more sci-fi; couldn't make it past 5 minutes. Can't imagine being stupid enough to actually enjoy this generic, trope-filled, soulless garbage.

>Can't imagine being stupid enough to actually enjoy this generic, trope-filled, soulless garbage.
How did you make it past 5 minutes of 2049 then?

why did they fuck up the minimalist visor design and end up with this arts & crafts scopedog mask

>Still has philosophical themes, just more subtle
Surely you jest.

>scopedog mask
I'm glad so many people have pointed this out. First time I saw it I thought I was going nuts. It really does look exactly like a Scopedog on her head. They must have wanted to avoid doing the exact same thing as Oshii. A noble goal, but they fucked it up.

Your wrong the basically just to the big set pieces from the two movies and smashed them together. It wasn't that good but that's what a cult classics is a movie that's not that good that only a couple of people like.

maybe if they tried to do their own thing in more than halting half-steps while falling back on images from his film at the same time. seriously, they did their own designs for a bunch of shit they should've just aped directly from oshii and shirow, and almost every one turned out looking cheap as fuck and thrown together like just this.

> In Bruges
>The Raid
>Snowpiercer
None of these are cult. They were successful, well received, and The Raid in particular got a sequel and potentially a third movie coming in future.
GiTS was poorly received by critics, divisive among audiences, already forgotten by consumers, and there's already the original, superior, anime movie alternative.

Considering the similar adaptation Speed Racer hasn't received cult status in close to a decade, despite being a greater film, GiTS won't be anything more than a footnote along with Fist of The North Star and The Guyver.

How exactly are you qualifying 'cult'? If I remember right Speed Racer was voted the most underrated movie of the decade by /r/movies or some other mainstream craphole. I think that any movie which fails upon release but picks up later qualifies for cult but I don't know if that really counts.

>Expect a total shitshow
>End up having really good time with this movie, a couple of beers and a bag of chips.

I'll probably give it another watch due to the fact there were no subtitles so i missed all Kitano dialogues.

I probably have thinner waist than her and i am a man.

Apologize

>tfw giant waist and am a man
is the only cure a bullet?

Your average cosplayer would play Toko better than Scarjo.

Watch this movie instead. It has nothing at all to do with Ghost in the Shell though, but unlike GiTS it's good.

...

A cult movie is a VHS shared among friends and eventually online forums.
Modern "cult" movies are watched by everyone at the same time, get a rottentomatoes score that fluctuates with its popularity which feeds into its perceived popularity.
You can have under-rated movies, but a "cult classic" isn't a thing with digital media.

>implying you wouldnt

>Could've had a young perky asian in skimpy clothes
>Got an aging jewess with almost zero "star power"
Get outta town

shame the movie didn't come out 10 years ago

If she hadn't gotten the breast reduction her body there would be perfect mommykino

Just like the Robocop remake, right?

I'm responding to your b8 with my favorite tortoise gif.

>Robocop remake
That's actually a better film than Gits, though still entirely forgettable

Or Total Recall, or Ghost Busters, or Conan...

Major is not an autist you faggot fuckface. She's an intelligent cop who was good enough to be assigned to a special operations task force. She's accomplished, wise, and strong, she wouldn't be where she is otherwise.
The only reason the original GiTS philosophy works is because the major is intelligent enough to grapple with her own humanity (or perceived lack of). Another layer is added when you realize that all of her accomplishments and skill mean potentially nothing in the face of her lack of personhood. If she's a machine, if she's not human, the fact that she's incredible and whether any of that matters comes into question. Her reality comes into question.
You throwing around the word autist because you think its relatable around here is laughable. That's just not her character. You'd know that if you weren't retarded though.
Fuck this shitty remake, fuck scarjo, and fuck you.

Just imagine what Villeneuve would've done with this film had he been in charge.
Sylvia Hoeks as Major
Rated R (so she would've been naked throughout half of her action sequences..
Minimum 2h30 minutes...If not 3hours
Actually focused on some of Mamoru Oshii's themes from the 1995 anime. aesthetically as beautiful as "Innocence".

As a matter of fact, it's striking how some scenes from Blade Runner 2049 had a simililar visual tone as GITS Innocence.

Arrival was garbage and 2049 was okay because The Goose and Paul Allen carried every scene they were in. Villeneuve isn't a good science-fiction guy.

those couple shots while theyre coming into land is the only time the two films look anything alike design-wise, and the way oshii and villeneuve shoot setpieces couldn't be further apart

>Dude randomly diving alone at night
>Can't be autist and good at your job
Calm down

I never said you couldn't be an autist and good at your job. I said Major isn't an autist. She's almost blow for blow a hardboiled detective stereotype with enough unique character traits to not be a cliche.
She's seasoned, not autistic. Faggot.

In all seriousness, GITS wasn't horrible. It was "meh". Had great visuals, could've been way better though. Had a lot of potential. I will say this, it's at least one of the better anime/manga adaptations out there. Maybe one of the best ever.

(unless we also count "Old Boy" which originally was a Japanese Manga, then adapted by korean director Park Chan-wook)..

Anyway, GITS wasn't as bad as let's say...Netflix's Death Note that's for damn sure.
Very frustrating though because some scenes clearly paid a greta homage to the Mamoru's anime.

The director clearly knew, watched the animes...and yet, kinda ruined some of the anime's best scenes and story elements.

He's very talented though. He also has a good eye, i remember, he's the guy who directed this brilliant music video

>Arrival was garbage
Pleb
youtube.com/watch?v=IWvybX6g0Wg

It was an excellent sci-fi

I would rather watch a bad movie than a "meh", because if a movie fails spectacular at least it's memorable in a way. The only thing I remember about the GiTS movie is that they hired the guy from Takeshi's Castle to play the squad chief.

kitano wasn't even pretending to care about anything other than his check

>copy a scene shot for shot
>"Look guys I'm paying homage! I swear I'm not a hack!"
The movie was shit. Kill yourself.

I agree with op,this movie took a lot of undeserved shit,its a solid 7/10

frances ha is fucking shit lol

I fucking loved this movie. Haven't seen the original so that probably helped.

>they hired the guy from Takeshi's Castle to play the squad chief.

>dude its going to be a cult movie
>literally a remake of a cult movie

What are you talking about? Liberals suck corporate dick

It's definitely conservatives that suck corporate dick

A corporate CEO is their party's choice for a leader

both of the major parties slob on corporate interest's knob, but over different issues

>Liberals suck corporate dick
>the conservative president is currently cutting taxes for corporations
HUH

SO
FUCKING
THICC

>STICC
Fixed for you.

Look at the brightside, with how bad Death Note and this went, American anime remakes won't ever be a thing.

>those couple shots while theyre coming into land is the only time the two films look anything alike design-wise

That's not true. And i'd even add that some of GITs Innocence's scenes had similar noirish sci-fi tone than the original Blade runner.

Not the entire film, but some scenes.

>Still has philosophical themes, just more subtle
>1 minute in the movie
>Your body is gone but your soul still remains. Your --ghost-- if you will.

JFS

Would cum inside.

>I actually hope they do a sequel
unlikely considering how much money they lost on this but more importantly, where would they take the story? they literally already cannibalized the 1995 film, innocence and SAC to frankenstein this thing together.

yeah case in point dude, warm tones over a deliberately retro art design. just because something has neon in it doesn't mean it looks like blade runner in a meaningful sense

Arrival and 2049 were respectively the first and second best films of the last decade

>As a matter of fact, it's striking how some scenes from Blade Runner 2049 had a simililar visual tone as GITS Innocence.
that's because both Blade Runner 2049 and GITS Innocence take visual inspiration from Scott's original Blade Runner

this it was awful like watching a cliff notes based on GITS in movie form but it was even more dumbed down

how does it feel to have a double digit IQ

>t. didn't understand arrival and liked 2049 for the "cute waifu"

erase yourself

Arrival was ass. They took a not particularly interesting story and made it extremely boring and also more confusing, stupid and ugly.

YOUR BASELINE IS WAY OFF user.

Wrong. You're thinking of Love Exposure and Drive.

But I'm not a SJW and I'd like to see a manga adaptation with actual Japanese, instead of a rom-com star and literal nobodies.

FATTY

nope, people who like these kinds of films don't like fatties.

This.

Anime neckbeards are like leftists, they live by massive double standards.

>that ending trying to become capeshit
A movie from cucks for cucks

>Good visuals
Fucking get out

>this movie will be remembered
It really wont.

>implying there is sunny and bright blue sky in any Asian metropolis ever
