Stinz Storytime

Stinz is an old Fantagraphics title about Steinheld "Stinz" Löwhard, a half-horse drafted into the military on the eve of a Great War.

At this point, Stinz is still in basic training, and is driving Sergeant Kirschen half mad with all the various special needs and exceptions that come with Stinz being what he is.

Previous storytime:

...

>How come you're holding it like [something about an elephant's anatomy]?

It's true, he is.

This is one of my favorite bits, especially that bottom left panel.

...

...

...

...

The barbed wire was bad enough, but here comes real trouble.

...

...

That damn wall though.

Centaur stealth technology!

...

...

...

Arschgeige means literally "ass violin." As in a guy who plays the violin with his ass.

...

Damn, but Stinz is one stand-up guy.

And yet he still knows how to get Kirschen's goat.

Move, dumbass!

...

Oops, skipped a page.

...

...

...

And the second half of the letters column finishes out issue #3.

I hope somebody out there likes these.

Courtesy bump. This is such a strange premise for a comic.

It gets even stranger later on, the end of the war causes some seriously crazy things. (Sadly, I'm missing some parts of the series here and there -- it got bounced around between a bunch of different publishers over the twenty years or so that Barr was writing it)
I'll do issue 4 in just a bit.

Here we go, issue #4 of the Fantagraphics run, in which Stinz gets promoted, and receives a surprising letter from home.

...

It seems our old friend Unruh is still a smart-mouthed pain in the ass.

...

...

...

That's showin 'em who's boss!

...

Hah, Kirschen's going through the confiscated mail.

Don't imply, Kirschen, it's bad for your health.

...

...

...

...

...

...

I love that she translates the dog, too.

Oh man, it's on.

...

That fuckin' dog, man, he kills me.

Damn, what a mess.

...

...

...

...

D'awww. Stinz, you big cornball.

And the letters page rounds this one out. There's one Fantagraphics issue left. I might have time to storytime it in a bit; if not I'll do it up tomorrow.

Bump

Donna Barr had an… unusual interest in men in German uniform. Be so kind as to tell the children here about Desert Peach.

>Donna Barr had an… unusual interest in men in German uniform

Definitely. She served in the military for a while herself, and seems to have developed a liking for snappy uniforms. And the Germans definitely have the snappiest.

>Desert Peach

Sadly, I don't have it, but it's supposed to be great. All about Erwin "The Desert Fox" Rommel's flamboyantly gay brother, I hear it's pretty funny, kind of like something Mel Brooks might have done in the 70s.

Issue 5 of Stinz coming up in a few minutes.

Closing out the Fantagraphics run, here's Stinz #5, featuring Stinz' wedding to Brüna.

That's right, this was under Brave New Words, not Fantagraphics.

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

Hoo boy, here we go.

...

...

...

...

There's that crazy dog again.

...

>Safe!

That's what you think, bub.

...

Hey, not the tail, lady!

Damn dude, you just barely escaped one ass-kicking, don't go back in for another!

...

...

...

Ha, ha, subtle.

...

And soon the war arrives.

Oh hey, I forgot about the bonus feature in this issue.

...

...

...

And that's the end of that issue, apart from some ads.
Tomorrow I'll be sharing the first issue of volume 2.
