Netflix's The Punisher Receives Mixed Critical Reaction

>Netflix released all 13 episodes to critics, and despite strong performances from Bernthal, Walcott and Moss-Bachrach (Micro), it was a slog to reach the end. I found myself thinking back to Person of Interest, which did a better job with similar material. Its main characters were an ex-CIA vigilante and his hacker partner, battling shadowy enemies in the military-industrial complex. Even in the framework of a formulaic CBS crime show, it was more satisfying than Marvel’s attempt at serious long-form drama.

>As a narrative about veterans trying to find their place in the world, “The Punisher” has something to say. But it could have been so much shorter, and its placement in the Marvel universe feels tangential at best.

>The Punisher’s first episode is sleepy and repetitive; nothing in it is anything we didn’t see in the second season of Daredevil. Along those same lines, The fifth and sixth episodes already drag more than the others, an indication of the usual mid-season Netflix slump.

Sounds like it'll be /ourshow/

If it didn't have the Marvel branding nobody would be excited for this generic crime tv show

>netflix didn't have the balls to go full frank
Not surprised. I'm going to watch it because I'm a filthy neckbeard but I'm not hopeful.

The Punisher isn't Jason Bourne.

I'd be a lot more concerned if it were receiving unanimous praise for how breezy and "fun" and "funny" it is.

>Punished under 6ft

DROPPED

>polygon review can't help but bring politics ino it

They fucked it with the muh government conspiracy

It worked when Garth Ennis did it. Valley Forge, Valley Forge was top tier.

pretty much this

It all depends on how much the conspiracy shit impacts his origin. 'Family killed by criminals in random encounter' is a totally different story from 'family killed by shadow government to conceal secrects.' It's changes the whole character.

Art is inherently political and to deny such makes you an anti-intellectual pleb, and a coward incidentally.

But the reviews aren't surprising. Netflix Marvel has been trending downward in quality hard after JJ, and another show that's too many episodes long? What a surprise. When will they stop that shit?

How can they screw that up? All they needed to do is no holds barred revenge porn.

Keep presuming Netflix would fucking learn that its most popular shows suffer from their length. Sat though so much unnecessary side plots that take away from the pace of what could have been 4 amazing series. The Defenders was an absolute let down. Even though it was shorter, the story was weak, the villains posed next to no actual threat, and it felt maybe to early to bring these character together. This feels like its going to have everything that was good about DD S2 but again padded out with forgettable characters, weak plots and few payoffs. Still going to have to sit though hours of it to get maybe 8 eps worth of a good series.

13 episodes.
They should do less.

I'm not even sure if pure episode count is the issue, since Defenders was 8 episodes and it was still padded and boring as shit

why did they add the shitty secretary from Daredevil? Literally network tv tier type of shit. Looks fucking awful

Maybe you shouldn't read it if it offends you.

I love The Punisher so much. I would go as fast as to say it might my favorite fictional character/story of all-time. Watching Netflix and Marvel trot out Frank for normies is like watching your high school sweetheart get gang raped by nu-males.

I swear to Christ if I have to read faggots looking for Good Boy Points chimping out about Frank for the next several months....

Yeah I also WTFed at that in the trailer. Punisher is always a big intimidating motherfucker in the comic. But he was a manlet in the trailer? Dropped.

>have a chance to do a cool 80's/90's B action movie homage type of show where Punisher goes fucks shit up of criminals and gangsters in over the top gruesome ways (like he did in the first episodes in S2 of DD)
>instead do a generic le evil CIA government conspiracy shit that everyone's already seen 100 times before

These shows should be 6-8 tops. Probably 5.

Castlevania should've been much longer.

If you expected it to be good might aswell leave this board and fuck off back to readdit

I agree. Punisher is one-dimension character who best works in environment where he has to kill specific target. I guess you could add 'Nam PTSD or flashback scenes. Why did they fuck up such a simple concept?

I watched Person of Interest until it turned into a Gay Grrl Power show.

>its placement in the Marvel universe feels tangential at best.

Best news yet.

Basic criticism is the 13 eps length which everyone here was already saying was too long.
8 eps should be the maximum. Have a fatter final ep if needing a big finish.

>13 episodes
What? No way I'm watching this trash, these are shit shows made to be binge watched, I guarantee most people won't get past the first 5 eps

So they did the government conspiracy thing so Frank can kill faceless mercenaries instead of shitty criminals, correct? It seems like a needless move. If you’re gonna make the Punisher not some criminal killing nutbar, why even bother doing a Punisher series?

t. SJW who would have died by now if they'd avoided exposing themselves to anything that offended them.

I'm assuming they've made it part of the deal in the beginning for these shows that they would be 13 episodes long, there's no way they can't see that pacing/filler were the biggest issues with luke cage, jessica jones and iron first.

well pretty much everything went wrong with iron fist.

there's no reason for them to be 13 eps still, especially being on a platform like netflix without having to please advertisers, there should be more flexibility in the length of shows, and individual episodes if they need to be longer/shorter.

Come ON that trailer was insane with the perfect use of Metallica if that was from a Death Wish reboot people would still be hyped man.

So it's like some shitty CBS crime show? Fuck, worst fear confirmed

>Art is inherently political and to deny such makes you an anti-intellectual pleb, and a coward incidentally.

Post Modernism/Frankfurt School/Critical Theory/Cultural Marxism at work, folks.

mixed means positive so we win

Will Marvel stop making this shit on Netflix now that Disney is going to have its own streaming service?

>Let me throw in my buzzwords I just learned

>Art is inherently political
Nigga what?

Also:
>Capeshit Netflix show
>Art

Learn to read

Has it been leaked somewhere yet?

Yes.

But Freeform is also getting Marvel shows now

Do Netflix shows ever get leaked?

I don't even think this show releases for another week or so.

So the criticism is that it has nothing to do with marvel unvierse (thank fucking god) and that it's 12 episodes long ?

It's friday

DD S1 was great with the 13 episode format

what? OP says it reminds the person of some shitty CBS show and that the CBS show did the same material better. The Punisher is a bust.

Who cares what a bunch of bloggers think?

>reading reviews written by numales

numales are the critics now and they have hold shit like this hostage now.

Eh, I enjoyed iron fist for what it was so I'll probably like this . Same with like cage. Hated jj tho.

>caring about what comicbookmovie.com critics think and what the show remind them off

>can't even create an interesting show with all the source material available
>resort to copying CBS' 957th generic cop show in row
can't wait for the endless scenes of law enforcement standing around going durrr who Punisher? DA and mayor on ass

>battling shadowy enemies in the military-industrial complex
wow very punisher

no criminals, just a man fighting the system! THE REAL CRIMINALS

fucksake

That sentence is about the series Person of Interest, not about the Punisher.

>reading comprehension

>kill faceless mercenaries instead of shitty criminals, correct? It seems like a needless move
not very PC, pontetially very "racist" otherwise

same people who did irish mafia in 2016 when thinking of a criminal menace

in comparison with that we'll see Castle doing, ie battling shadowy enemies in the military-industrial complex

i mean, at least pull a ennis and connect cia drug trafficking shit (either Nam or Afghanistan) with local crime

How is doing Irish mafia more PC than italian mafia you fucking retard

italian mafia would already be pretty pc nowadays since they're barely unexistent. People just use it because that's what was there during the creation of the punisher

putting the irish mafia as your go-to criminal organization today is like pulling the jewish mafia as if it was the 1920s

lol you dipshit it literally means the criminals are now paler lmao

that's what i imagine in my head when i think of brutal violent criminality that begs for a correction: gingers

Taxation is theft on a scale higher than any street thug

>t. libertarian who never leaves his house

your point is absolutely fucking pointless because nuPunisher is battling muh cia and muh gubment because it's trendy

youtube.com/watch?v=bWpK0wsnitc
fuck the current political climate, this is the best Punisher there is, just dispensing street justice and unapologetic edge
