You know you're in for a shit time when the moon is called luna.

the earth is called terra in my language tho

>protags father is high up in the military
>the galaxy is inhabited by agressive aliens
>protag has daddy issues
>protag makes it impossible for earth to defend itself for "peace"
>all of humanity is now at risk of being genocided but at least the evil military was stopped

It makes sense for us to be called terrans if we follow our own latin taxonomy scheme. Plus it sounds cool.
Earthling sounds like the name of some gay grass eating furry people

>tfw the only true destiny for humanity is a white planet united entirely under the banner of the eternal god emperor so that we may wage unending war on a hostile alien galaxy
>mfw peace will only come with the conquering of every bit of space rock and the slaughtering of every last xenos from here to the edge of the universe

But calling Earth 'Terra' is giving credit to the Romans and they are like totally imperialistic and stuff. Cannot even right now.

Nigga, if the movie isn't in latin, then why the fuck would people do that? You never see people refer to dogs as canis lupis familiaris in these.

>sci-fi
>all the alien races are just different colored humanoids

This is basically the plot to Avatar, this also serves as your daily reminder that the humans in Avatar literally did nothing wrong.

Can we rename Earth 'Terra'? It sounds so much cooler.

>my politics aren't catered to
>something universally disliked by civilized peoples is shown as disdainful

UMA...?

Even "serious" scifi always puts so little thought into aliens. I think the only films I've seen where it really felt like they gave a shit about being believable with aliens were 2001, Solaris, and Alien.

in the real world yea, but since its a movie and the fucking souls of the world were in a fucking tree or some shit, basically god is real and hes the indian god, then its kinda fucked up

i mean fuck were talking about the afterlife, honestly seems more valuable to sell people eternal life than some ore

"Earthling" and "Earth" are meaningless in any language other than english. Each language has its own word for these (often just their own word for dirt).
If it's the interplanetary/galactic future we need to refer to ourselves as a group originating from somewhere, especially if we use that word with potential aliens. Can you imagine if each culture introduces itself to aliens with a different name? It would make sense to use a common language for something like that. And it would make sense to keep the same taxonomy we already use which is latin.

>series is set far in the future

we really should before we meet any aliens
"So what's your planet called?"
"E-earth"
no, I don't want that to happen, my great nephews and nieces deserve better

newfag trying too hard to fit in detected

>"Earth" means "shit" in their language

Earth sounds cucky to be honest, Terra sounds like the homeworld of a mighty empire.

Yes and terra also exactly means, dirt. Beyond that if we all had a universal language anyway, then this would not be an issue and we would just use the word in that language, it could be terra (people already said that in the thread) but if they are talking in english, it would just be earth. Aliens communicating with us as we are today would have far more problems than just knowing where we come from(which you can be sure they would have their own word for us as well).

How the fuck do they know what it's called?

Yes, the OP.

>the original earth has been forgotten in humanity's vast and endless expansion into the stars, millions of years in the future
>the only known earths are variations on it, such as "Earth-2"
>protagonist's quest for an artifact leads them to a mysterious unknown planet far from recorded space
>it's eventually revealed to be the original earth

I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable taking LSD there.

You're projecting user.

If they have the ability to track an item through Interstellar space then it would be a simple matter to monitor radio transmission or Internet information in order to find out what the inhabitants called their own world

Fun fact: There is no scientific name for "Earth". It's the only planet in our solar system without one.

Let's compromise then, let's call it fiat.

OP is a genius

Wouldn't a basic universal language force most civilizations to change the name of their home planet? Most will probably just call their planet some variation of "ground."

Would most likely end up being numbered and call it a day. Sort of like they do with stars and galaxies now.

>OMG LE FROG POSTER IS DUMB XD
>ANYONE POSTING A FROG IS LE REDDIT xD
Your Reddit spacing gives you away, newfag.

Maybe, more than likely one language would probably come to be the 'main' language of the species rather than a made up language like Esperanto becoming the 'universal basic'.
My guesses for the real world would be English or one of the big Chinese languages like Mandarin or Cantonese.

And Arrival

>Reddit spacing

>Don't understand that the user was just making fun of Reddit spacing

>white knighting for some random user on Sup Forums

which film had the most 'alien' aliens? none of this humanoid, comprehensible bullshit. Arrival had interesting concepts

Shit, I would. Imagine having all those people around you dressed exactly the same right when visuals start kicking in. Anyone gives you trouble just say you're overcome by god or something.

The Alien franchise has the best designed aliens I think, they are genuinely otherworldy and disturbing. Credit to H. R. Giger to be honest.

>can hit a small rodent from several yards with their pea shooter
>this equates to full out space warfare skill

Rey is a Mary Sue, I know some anons on here will try and claim she isn't but denying at this point just shows you're a Disney shill.

Either Alien or Starship Troopers. By the way, what would win between a Xenomorph and Arachnid 1 on 1?

I haven't seen this many frogs in a Sup Forums thread in a long time.

"the moon" is really a shitty name for the moon though

>sci-fi
>everyone wears spandex
>everything is way too clean

It's not called 'Moon' Earth's moon is Luna.

Well that is it's actual name

Why are video games, especially older ones have much better sci-fi setting

> Halo
> most beloved main protagonist is a spartan which is a program originally was created to successfully quell rebel factions
> Now the spartans are diverted along with the combined strength of the human race to fight much more powerful alien. They still carry that past of slaughtering their own human in their memory.

> starcraft
> space colony uses convicts as soldier
> some guy recruits these guys and lead a rebellionagainst the government
> the new guy became a dictator and is an asshole anyway
> all separated from those is a larger but much farther away earth-base human state government who said wtf is going on and tried to regain control of the colony but failed
> Everything is for survival and power overall. Plenty of shaky alliance and betrayal happen constantly

That's because it was the first moon to be named, I suppose we should really call Earth's moon 'Luna' and our sun 'Sol'.

>the moon's real name is moon

really made me think

No it is literally called 'Moon', Luna is just the Latin name for it. The scientific name for that type of body is satellite.

>he died later of a cold

Could it be because video games aren't made by Hollywood?

>sc-fi movie
>humans are the "bad guys"

This is honestly one of the better shitposts I've seen on here in a while, albeit that is a low bar these days

Would forgo that fascism could not work under such circumstances, and I'd watch it
