They were obviously trying to rehash the "some men just want to watch the world burn" scene from TDK, while completely missing the point about the scene, in the sense that Alfred never reveals the Joker's origin or motivation. He just offers the audience a glean in on his nature. There's a big difference. One works and makes the character more frightening, the other completely kills all mystery and ambiguity of the character. TDKR was full of this expository garbage. It's remarkable how seemingly incompetent the end result is.
