Is it good? Should I watch it?

Yes
Don't really care if you do or not.

is it wire level or more like treme? (sorry I really didn't like treme)

the wire>the deuce>treme

Ok then, I'll give it a chance.

David Simon is a hack

watch it with the antisemitism

It's shit.

why

wow quality review

The premise is garbage and the show itselfe is boring.

one of the best pleb filters this year

This. It's worth watching. Several cast members from The Wire are in it.

the premise is gr8 tho and calling it garbage is the same thing as calling it shit

why is it a pleb filter? It looks like the typical HBO show with lots of sex scenes to draw the normies in.

you just confirmed what i said

Just watch one fucking episode and decide for yourself. Or ask better questions. Jesus fucking christ I hate people like you.

>the premise is garbage
It's based on actual people you fucking moron.

Ok, I'll ask better questions: what themes does it explore? Degeneracy, sex, fetishes? Are the characters and their arcs good? I hope it isn't another Master of Sex (boring and shitty)

It has a decent premise but falls apart for a couple of reasons:

1. James Franco should not be playing twins. It's a gimmick that really hurt the series, especially since they don't even try and make it so you could tell them apart ala Ewan McGregor in Fargo.

2. The series itself is poorly written in that there is no overall plot and it's just random shit happening. The closest to an overall arc would be Maggie Gyllenhaal going from independent contractor hooker to porn star to porn director. But even that was loosely done and felt like a bunch of random shit happening.

And season two will probably be just as bad if not worse, if the rumors about there being a five-six year time skip are true

no it's shit just like treme was

it's just some boring half assed character drama filled with uninteresting characters

Much better than Masters of Sex.
Yes, I think the characters have good arcs, and the acting is very good.
I wouldn't say it really explores fetish as a theme, unless you count porn and prostitution as fetishes. It's really more about the beginnings of an industry, and the road to the legitimization of pornography in the early 70s in New York City. It's based on true events and real people.

I enjoy it

>James Franco should not be playing twins.
If you can't tell them apart based on their mannerisms and personalities (and hair, and clothes) then you are mentally retarded.

ok then, thanks. I literally don't know anything about how the porn industry started, should be interesting.

>especially since they don't even try and make it so you could tell them

you are retarded. There is no easy way to say this.
>what themes does it explore?

main theme of the show is misogyny, and it is explored in a wide and complex way

it's a great show if you like ugly boobs.

The main theme of the show is NOT misogyny, you fucking moron. Holy fucking shit why would anyone make a tv show about misogyny?

then you are an idiot who didn't get it because it's obvious.

No I'm just not some fucking stupid brainwashed dipshit who majored in gender studies.

What's half-assed about it? Why do you find the characters are uninteresting?

Imagine getting this triggered by someone mentioning misogyny

>main theme of the show is misogyny
Hahaha, no.

back to infowars, retard.

wait,
this is too critical to let slip by...
why would you major in gender studies? aren't u aware of the liberal bias in academia?

it good

>it's a thread about a good show devolves into political shitflinging epsiode

How can something this obvious go over your head? It's thematically more complex than just "misogyny" but did you fall asleep any time there was an exploration of the dynamics of power between pimp and prostitute and the objectification of women?

It's hardly a gimmick when the story is based off real-life twins. I can understand problems with casting Franco I guess, but it's relevant to the true aspects of the story and the characters have completely different personalities. You really don't need visual differences to tell them apart.

I'm really impressed with Maggie Gyllenhaal in this. Her facial expressions usually say it all.

Even if i majored in gender studies, this show is still about misogyny.

another idiot

bump
where are all you fucks who constantly fellate The Wire?

it's pure unadulterated kino

Most Wire fans didn't like The Deuce.

If anyone is interested in more about the show, the Rialto Report did a whole episode talking about the history of the characters and talking to one of the show's creators. The people at Rialto Report also worked as technical advisors on the show.

therialtoreport.com/2017/09/03/the-deuce-3/

>For the last 25 years, we have interviewed hundreds of people who were connected to the birth of the pornographic film industry in New York – from film directors to actors, theater owners and distributors, and a fair number of cops and politicians too.

>We wanted to make sure that the real story of the era was preserved – not just by journalists, academics, filmmakers or fans, but by the people who actually lived and worked in this era. People who took risks. People who did things they were proud of, or may have regretted later. Who were they, what made them get involved, and what happened to them afterwards? Four years ago, we started to share these interviews in a series of podcasts and articles published on The Rialto Report website.

>In 2015, we were approached by the producers of an HBO series that was being developed, called The Deuce, and we had a small role working with the show’s writers and researchers.

No
Sure, why not. Maybe you want to see Saggy Gyllenhaal's tits.

Did you post about that podcast in an older Deuce thread? I just listened to it yesterday and really liked that the producer went as far as to track down what movies would have been playing at the time so that the theater marquees would be accurate.

Holy shit! To your point, I thought they just went on hiatus. Season 1 is over?! That's it?

I don't remember anything of substance happening or changing. It's truly a show that's just... there.

>I don't remember anything of substance happening or changing. It's truly a show that's just... there.
I don't understand the people saying this. In eight episodes you see the entire landscape of prostitution changing in which the pimps are being left behind for organized "massage parlors", the revolution of legalized hardcore pornography, citywide issues of corruption, and the individual character developments of people like Vince and Frankie shacking up with the mafia, Candy's rise through pornography, etc. There's like a dozen concurrent plots evolving through each episode.

Yeah I wind up posting it in a lot of Deuce threads. If you enjoyed the episode (their editing is a bit weird, I find) some others to check out would be Jamie Gillis, Paul Thomas, the ep about Barbara Broadcast and Kay Parker. Actually most of the episodes are very interesting.

I think the problem in a lot of cases is most of us watch shows while "multitasking" (which usually just means browsing Sup Forums or playing vidya) and people miss things if there isn't an explosion or something to make them look at the screen and pay attention.

I ended up also listening to the Deep Throat and Dark Brothers episodes, but I especially had the Jamie Gillis ones in mind. Not sure if you're familiar with that book Pure Filth that collects transcripts of the dialogue from some of his films, but I read it last year and it sparked my interest in him.

>I think the problem in a lot of cases is most of us watch shows while "multitasking" (which usually just means browsing Sup Forums or playing vidya)
Speak up, Sup Forums. If any of you do this I'm going to find you and slap the shit out of you.

>I think the problem in a lot of cases is most of us watch shows while "multitasking" (which usually just means browsing Sup Forums or playing vidya)
there are people who are that retarded?

It's just the reddit tourists

>not using at least two screens for kino
You're a pleb.

I've got a fixation with 42nd St. Times Square, New York of the mid-to-late 1970's. For me that place and time was Valhalla. My three favorite books on the subject are Tales of Times Square by Josh Alan Friedman, Ghosts of 42nd Street by Anthony Bianco and Sleazoid Express by Bill Landis and Michelle Clifford. The Other Hollywood by Legs McNeila and Jennifer Osborne is also a great book about the porn industry that touches upon that era.

Was disappointed that Franco got cast but, you know what, he's not being a douchebag meme actor in it but giving a genuine performance. Plus he looks right for the part. Art direction, costumes and cinematography are all solid. I watched the first episode and enjoy that it's more a slice of life show rather than trying to be flashy. Really sells the grit and sleaze of Times Square. Think more Robert Altman/Sidney Lumet rather than Scorcese/DePalma.

I'll be picking this up on Bluray if they make sure there's plenty of supplements on the shows production and the history of 42nd Street.

As for the shows future. I've read the plan to make this three seasons and I think that's a great idea. First season takes place at the beginning of the porn era just when Depp Throat was about to hit. Second season should take place during the Deuce's height/nadir in the late 70's while the third season should be at the beginning of the end when AIDS and crack started to kill Times Square. I don't have a problem with characters not returning for other seasons but I'd like a little bit of info as to what happened to these people at the end if this is the last we see of them.

Anywho, glad 42nd St. is getting some love!!!FACT!!!

Here is how it is.
Sup Forums doesn't even mention the deuce the same way they don't ever have the wire appreciations threads.
Bot the wire and deuce are unmemeable by those """""Sup Forums""""" soyboy retarded kiddies so that is a sign that you should watch it.
Also it is far fron the level of the wire but Simon does a really, really good job.
And I think that show will become much better in s02.

going to rewatch the show with half a dozen monitors streaming vintage porn now.

Nice. I'm going to rewatch it while re-reading this comment over and over again on my laptop.

>Also it is far fron the level of the wire but Simon does a really, really good job.
I think it was probably unfair to expect something on the level of The Wire in the first place just because of the degree of separation that exists in The Deuce compared to The Wire. They did their research and I think pulled off an excellent job of evoking the era, but the firsthand experience with the kind of stories that inspired The Wire is what really makes it shine.
