Why do Weebs have such low standard for anime as an medium of film?
I often see Weebs referring to Your Name as a masterpiece of film and filmmaking, the best animated film of all time surpassing the works of Miyazaki, Kon, Takahata. That Shinkai is a genius that at his age has even surpassed where Miyazaki was at his age (hilariously bullshit as Miyazaki released Lupin at the same age).
When I watched Your Name though I was like "Okay this is above average for your typical generic anime and some of the jokes have good timing, but this is still a pretty fucking bog standard generic LN/YA story with largely mediocre plodding direction and writing" yet to Weebs it's the greatest thing fucking ever.
It's not only Your Name though, it's any mainstream anime that is anything above just watchable. Konasuba is the greatest comedy TV show because unlike most anime, it actually has at least one joke that is actually well done per episode, Fate/Zero is the greatest action show of all time because it's filled with edgy psuedo-intellectual patronising bullshit etc etc.
Why in fuck don't Weebs have respect for anime as a medium and artform like film buffs do for film? If Your Name was live action, it would be considered an overly mediocre teen YA romance film, yet because it's anime, even critics are calling it one of the best animated films of all time.
It's sad because another anime film I just viewed, Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome which was released to little fanfare has 1000x better writing and more creative writing in it than any anime released in the past few years combined, yet because it's a indie anime film that doesn't play to generic weeb tropes, it's completely ignored.
Why do Weebs have such low standard for anime as an medium of film?
Everyone says this about movies that are widely marketed.
I saw it last year and I honestly have no idea how anyone could think it's a masterpiece.
>stupid average anime plot BUT OMG WHAT A TWIST
>full of plot holes and Deus Ex Machinas
>full of dumb tropes for otakus
On the plus side, the animation was gorgeous but Jesus, the rest is so average it hurts.
most people don't have objective discernment
I have noticed this as well. If anime "masterpieces" like Death Note were perfectly adapted as live action, they would be considered simplistic edgelord shit.
Not gonna read more than a couple sentences of this longass post, but the movie is really pretty.
Neither of your criticisms articulate anything about the film. You should figure out why people like it before deciding they have poorer taste.
>On the plus side, the animation was gorgeous
One of the common things you will see with Kimi No Na Wa reviews from weebs is "filled with plot holes, characters meh, didn't buy the romance, story is a mess, but it's fucking beautiful 9/10, an absolute masterpiece"
Its weird as fuck.
post anime that is actually kino. i’ll start
>weebs
Where do you think you are, dumb normalfag?
that's the only one. Literally everything else is shit
Why I posted this on Sup Forums and not .Sup Forums where Sup Forums will think any show is a masterpiece if it has good waifu designs.
Haven't seen any that isn't Ghibli
>m-moot said Sup Forums is for weebs
Your effete overlord isn't here anymore, piss off.
so normiecore it fucking hurts
>WAHHH da childwen DIIIIIED
>IT MADE ME SAD SO IT'S GOOOOOD
Anything by Satoshi Kon, anything by Isao Takahata, most of Yuasa's works are miles above the rest of the formulaic trash that makes up 99.9% of anime and manga as well.
>forgetting about Miyazaki
I watched it a few years ago with my younger sister (she was 8 at the time, I was 20). She had no reaction at the ending bit and I was fucking crying rivers. That shit affected me.
>it made me sad so its good
>it evoked emotions
You mean to say it was an effective drama?
>it's a indie anime film that doesn't play to generic weeb tropes, it's completely ignored.
Had no marketing, has a very weird artstyle and is a more adult oriented romantic comedy based on a TV anime that nobody watched (The Tatami Galaxy)
Not something 14 year olds and nerds are going to watch.
was falling for obvious b8 part of your plan?
You think every movie that makes you feel sad is kino? Seriously?
Why is it that only Japan, France and Ireland can make comfykino?
Outside Chef, I can't even remember a single comfy English-speaking film of the last 5 years.
Excellent taste my Sup Forumsros, these moeshit-loving plebs will never know what true anime is.
Theres a reason you don't show this film to kids, and it's not just the eyeballs melting from peoples skulls. It's because they're too fucking stupid to grasp what's going on.
>for anime as an medium of film
What the fuck does this even mean? Anime and film are both media. Are you retarded?
>why are weebs retarded
Duh fucking uh.
No intelligent person that watches anime takes Shinkai seriously.
That is obviously a pasta but I'll respond anyway.
>Hating moe
>While posting YKK
Kill yourself
Academy Award never.
Weebs don't give a shit about anything that doesn't look like typical generic anime filled with waifus or mecha (and even mecha isn't even that popular anymore).
The same as most Comic book readers don't give a shit about anything that isn't Capeshit. People don't view their respective mediums as art, they view it as products for consumption.
miyazaki sucks , fuck you
Academy Award for Animation is only handed out to anything else aside from Disney or Pixar when Dis/Pix didn't have a major release that year.
Night is Young, Walk On Girl has no chance though it's absolutely fantastic, it's going to Coco.
This.
Miyazaki was the one responsible for moeshit and shonenshit with Future Boy Conan and My Neighbor Totoro.
Noburo Ishiguro was the true master of anime.
Correction, Miyazaki peaked with Mononoke quickly fell off a cliff (Spirited Away is still fantastic, but Howls and Wind Rises are both shit, Ponyo is a great kids film but nobody aside from like 5-10 year olds are going to get anything from it).
Nothing Shinkai does comes close to say Porco Rosso, Mononoke, Kiki.
should I watch The Tatami Galaxy before watching NIY,WOG?
Who the fuck were you talking to, people on other websites?
The general consensus on Sup Forums is that Your Name is the usual Shinkai tripe. Good movie but nowhere near the best. A nice success though, the daily Koe no Katachi vs. Kimi no na wa threads were awful.
I would love to hear your response to this, bro. :)
...
>kino
Typical Sup Forumseddit mobile app posting cancer
Not necessary but has reoccurring characters from Tatami.
It's set in the same world but isn't a direct sequel.
Yes. It's not necessary but I think it would improve the experience.
>Everyone I knew dropped The Tatami Galaxy because "The subs were hard to read"
Take my Reddit Gold for this epic post, gentlesir!
Recommend me some anime series or films please. The absolute best of the genre.
It's Sup Forums, there is no critical thought here beyond surface level superficial details and their vocabulary doesn't allow for anything beyond that anyway.
what do you think of nausicaa? i always liked that one
The best part? You wouldn't be posting on Sup Forums today if it wasn't for your reddit ancestors crying on /q/ to make it more accessible for people that shared their mindset
Still the most overrated anime film of all time.
The Manga is overrated as well.
It's still good.
Wanna watch an anime that is thought provoking? Watch Tenshi no Tamago (Angel's Egg).
Death Note writing could use some polishing for a live action adaptation but that's part of the different medium, for the larger part. I still agree it's bullshit on certain occasions but I love it none the less.
Kek.
And someone fell for it.
>I watched 20 animeS
>nobody watches Yuasa anime
You don't really believe this, right? Everyone on Sup Forums that actually watches anime knows who he is and has watched his works.
>the majority of people are stupid
And water is wet.
Ping Pong
Mind Game
Anime is a medium, not a genre.
Watch "The Tatami Galaxy" and "The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl" so that you will have some context for some of this thread's discussions.
Here's episode #1:
youtube.com
>Wanna watch an anime that is thought provoking? Watch Tenshi no Tamago (Angel's Egg).
God you videogame players that don't know a thing about cinema are embarrassing. Thank god /film/ is being opened in the new year
Thank you for saying you love Death Note so I didn't have to waste my time on your suggestion.
Manga >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Film.
The Manga is legit one of the best adventure/fantasy stories ever written.
Already downloading.
Ok, thanks.
>video game players
Not him but why use this as an insult? I play video games but films/shows are my number 1 hobby.
>We will never again get a high fantasy anime that isn't just JRPG tropes, Jesus kun and Harem tropes.
Upvoted!
I didn't like it, especially the twist in the end it was just a dream and he was just fucking a turtle the entire time.
If you faggots love Ghibli so much you should at least watch the best Miyazaki work, On Your Mark.
>anime
>genre
Yes, you can call it "xhe".
Which one are you, a pleb or a troll?
If you're plebs then check out Tenshi no Tamago because it really deserves to be watched, if anything for the incredible art, much better than that Your Name digital crap.
>a literal record of a D&D campaign is not rpg tropes
What did he mean by this?
This list is hit or miss, but the good stuff on it is the most creative stuff you will find in anime.
Arguably the best anime film director ever was Satoshi Kon, so check out his works as well, his works have been loosely adapted into successful western films, Black Swan was a loose adaption of Perfect Blue and Inception was a loose adaption of Paprika.
Beyond that, Miyazaki up to Spirited Away, Isao Takahata's works especially Only Yesterday and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
Yuasa's works if you want really wacky creative stuff.
In terms of series, if you've never watched anime before and you're a westerner, Cowboy Bebop and Stand Alone Complex are the obvious suggestions for great entry level anime. Both are very well direction, have very good scripts by anime standards and have fantastic episodes all round.
Neon Genesis Evangelion along with EOE is a must watch just because of the impact it had on the industry, ignore Rebuild films though.
>What did he mean by this?
Specifically JRPG I meant, Record of the Lodoss War is a very classically WESTERN fantasy story with western fantasy tropes and basically as you said, is a DnD campaign come to life (Slayers was based on a campaign as well).
Most fantasy anime though is based heavily on JRPGs like Dragon Quest and Korean/Japanese MMOs and are filled much more heavily with JRPG tropes and systems.
I watched anime before (4-5 years ago) but gave up entirely because I was tired of the same old tropes and dumb plot points in every single series that my friends reccommended to me.
>most anime is shit!
Could the same not be said for live action films, or even television?
Of all hollywood movies released, think of how many are actually good and not a reboot, sequel, capeshit, romantic comedy, or star wars flick
If you like romcoms but can't stand the usual highscool anime I suggest KareKano, His and Her Circumstances, it's written and directed very well.
Look at this and tell me it doesn't make you wanna watch Angel's Egg.
>Could the same not be said for live action films, or even television?
Difference is I've found with both weebs and comicfags is that they will hold up absolute mediocre shit as masterpieces of film.
I think most people understand say, Capeshit Marvel crap films are at best just good popcorn flicks, but they're not fucking KINO films, where Anime and Comicbook fags will hold up anything that is above just watchable as some masterwork of human culture.
Go on /r/anime and Myanimelist and you see in general people have absolutely no fucking standards when it comes to anime beyond "is it boring".
honestly the source material is pretty forgettable, it's really just all the creative being fresh off of eva and ready to experiment more that elevated it
worth checking out though for sure
wow I love the animation in that, thanks for the rec
>Anime and Comicbook fags will hold up anything that is above just watchable as some masterwork of human culture.
Examples?
Cowboy Bebop for anime and anything by Grant Morrison for comics.
Good, but undeservedly receiving praise as the best shit ever.
check the OP
what was up with 20 close ups of doors sliding open and close? Are sliding doors just another obscure fetish in Japan?
And that spit sake was fucking nasty
don't worry, jj abrams is gonna fix this one with a remake with black male/white female
I can just imagine it
>Stacy and Jamal swap
>Stacy is now in Jamals body
>goes to the restroom
>sits
>looks down
>she gasps
>"so its true..."
>normalfags overpraise something
Who would've thought.
>A teenage boy and girl embark on a quest to meet each other for the first time after they magically swap bodies.
Sounds stupid. Why would anyone want to watch this?
I watch Angel eggs, it's just nonsense after nonsense and the director made it because he read too much Nietzsche or something and turned into an atheist
why are all weaboo babbys and normie connoisseurs so fucking gaga about this shit cartoon? It was hamfisted as fuck and the story was retarded - the brother let his sister slowly starve to death instead of just going to the bank, withdrawing his dad's money, and buying food
>normalfags watching anime and reading comic books
Really? No, I'm talking about actual nerds who are genuinely into their hobbies but never broadened their horizons and have only explored really small niches.
and they have to cramp in "time traveling", a "comet god", plus family drama,
Wanna know how I can tell you've never actually met someone into anime?
>the story was retarded - the brother let his sister slowly starve to death instead of just going to the bank, withdrawing his dad's money, and buying food
That's the point. The tradition and culture of Japanese pride and honor were a mistake. He can't surrender and seek proper help just like Japan can't surrender without a fucking act of God.
It gets worse.
Because you have strange standards about what it means to be "into" anime. You're not satisfied with someone merely watching and enjoying anime, but rather they can only be "into" anime in your judgment if they're into the _right_ anime.
More like anyone who's seen more than a hundred titles can give you masterpieces other than Cowboy Bebop. You've only been describing people whose only experience with anime has been what they saw on Toonami.
Whoop, there it is. A person who watches and enjoys anime isn't actually "into" anime unless they've seen what Anonymous Post #91019690 has seen.
He spent the whole time begging for food from everyone. How is that prideful? When he was in the hospital and the doctor said his sister is dying from malnutrition he asked the doctor "Where do I get food?" That's not being prideful. That's being fucking retarded.
Your name is like the ultimate normie bait my friend. I think Shinkai finally realized how big of a hack he has been so he went all out this time, adding all sort of cliches, tropes etc that could attract your average brainlet teenagers and oh boy did it work.
For example he dumb down everything including the characters, easier for the mass to related duh. One is a farm girl who had issues with her dad, oh and she want to dump her boring town and travel to the big city. The other lead is a city boy that love... I don't know, beautiful women I guess, basically this fucker has no personality and his suppose "daily life problems" are what you could saw in "teenager angst, text book 101" How can you get more generic than that????
Like that, everything is dumb down, even the romance is dumb down since all the necessary "developments" during the body swapping period were in a 3 minutes montage with another generic J-pop as background music. Because the mass fucking love pop music and they don't need to know better. Fuck the bonding between characters alrighty?
Dumb it down, except for the convoluted plot because again, people fucking love shit like love with boundary and time traveling lolololo
>someone has only watched about twenty titles in his entire life
>why isn't he considered into anime???
Considered by who? What makes you the final arbiter on this?
This. Your Name is basically Marvelshit and judging all of anime based on that is fucking retarded.
yeah, I has been awhile since I watched that movie but I sill don't get why didn't the little fuck just use his daddy money bank to buy some food?
can someone explain to me why that guy in the restaurant slashed the manager's skirt after she comped him free dinner despite his obvious bullshit toothpick story?
Cowboy Bebop was on toonami, normalfags watch television.
It's better for his ego to beg strangers than to go crawling back to his aunt (or whoever she was).
Well, it's going to be funny when anime takes over.
Is it also better to beg strangers than just going to the bank and taking the money out?
I guess that's the case. Like this stranger didn't know me personal so it doesn't matter.
BUT MUH AUNT? She gonna brag till the end of time.
I imagine that the aunt might be in possession of that money.
some people are dick, just like real life :^)
