Jackson's trilogy butchered LoTR including removing important and interesting scenes(like bombadil and wolf attacks near moria in fellowship) and ruining the proper motivations and personalities of the main and side characters.
Will we ever get a full and faithful depiction of the books?
How many hours do you think will be required to include 99% of the dialogues and scenes?

No one cares nerd. LotR fucking rules.

Fuck you. As a fan of the books who considers LOTR to be a modern epic myth, the transmission of the story to the visual medium was damn-near perfect. Books and movies are two completely different worlds, and you can't just take the book and put the same scenes on screen in the same order, because dramatic visual storytelling has completely different timings and constraints.

Love the books for what they are, and love the movies for what they are.

Counterpoint: The books are boring as fuck, and the movies are actually entertaining to watch.

Why do you think they call it an adaptation?

No one wants to watch a carbon copy of the book.

you know what op you're right! come on amazon! make the trilogy in a multi-cultural tv show format!

So you didnt mind how Théoden was made into a cowered pussy?
and how it didnt make any sense?
First he was under the spell of saruman so he was passive and cowedrly but then Gendalf came in to remove the spell and Theoden returned to himself so the audiance expects him to now be kingly and bravbe and ready for war..
Instead in the film he remains a cowerd making his people run to the fortress.
In the books he wants to go fight but Gendalf is the one who persuades him to go hide in the fortress instead.
And in the fortress it is theoden who tells Aragorn to go ride out with him not other way around.

Saruman is also ruined because in the books saruman wanted the ring to himself to become the strongest lord and offered gendalf to join him and rule middle earth. He did not become Sauron's brainwashed servant unlik in the movie...
Boromir was ruined.
Faramir was ruined.
Aragorn was made into a whinney little bitch who did not want to be king.
I wont even mention how Elrond managed to teleport to Aragorn in the third movie to give him his sword...
The the books the sword is redone and given to aragorn before the fellowship leaves..

He nailed it 2bh

But many things were translated badly..there was no need to change the characters.
Why did they ruin aragorn for example? In the books aragorn is brave and determined to become king not some whinney cowardly fag.
Why was theoden ruined and made into a shitter? Why was Denethor made into some insane person?
Why the fuck did they add a love traingle?
Literally all of these things feel strange and make no sense when you watch the movies. The seem out of place not because they were different in the book but because they are added in and feel out of place and resolved in strange ways that feel off because they were never an integral part of the story.

OP you are talking to millenials. 99% of them never read the books and if they will try they will think they are boring cause there is too much talking and descriptions and not enough action.
They are dumb star wars watching infantiles.

People who didnt read the books will never understand.
LOTR is in fact very cinematic and most of it suits cinema perfectly.
Its just that when the movie was made different actors decided and were allowed to reinterpret the characters.
Thats as far as chaning the different characters slightly.
Now Gimli, who was ruined fully and completely..Well here i think its jsut a matter of shooting a series of movies for what was it, 7 years? that you kinda get bored and become less serious abotu the subject matter.

If a contemporary series would have been made it would suit LoTR better since writers are kings in series and actors and directors do not have such a stranglehold over the script.

They should have included the part where Galadriel gives Gimli a footjob.

>made gimli a quip machine and ruined him as a character.
Yeah, great stuff. Please go on and tell me how the medium change forced this to happen.

You're a terrible person. I'm gonna answer each of your questions because you need to see the light. Part 1

>Why did they ruin aragorn for example? In the books aragorn is brave and determined to become king not some whinney cowardly fag.
Because the movie is immensely shorter than the book, so they needed to give him an arc that would have him start as a ranger and end as a king. So they made him be an exile who doesn't know if he wants to accept his fate or not, but after Gandalf dies, Aragorn starts to become a leader. Then when Boromir dies, Aragorn promises him that he will not let their people fail, and Boromir names him his captain and king. This makes Aragorn accept his fate, and begins his ascension into the throne of Gondor.

>Why was theoden ruined and made into a shitter?
Theoden is shown as being corrupted and weak when introduced, and also very bitter about Gondor's abandonment of Rohan. He feels betrayed, and very lost, as the first thing that he attends to after being released from Saruman, is the funeral of his only son and heir. So his arc is the reclaiming of his warrior spirit, and remembering what it means to be a king. Also, fuck you again, because Theoden is by far the best secondary character in the movies.

>Why was Denethor made into some insane person?
Establishing the palantir and Denethor's character would have taken way too much time away from the rest of the story, so they make him become a despairing steward who sees the destruction of his kingdom and gives in to the forces of evil. Thus, in the movie he serves as a foil to Aragorn and Theoden, who decide to fight in the face of insurmountable odds and express the best qualities of a leader.

Part 2

>Why the fuck did they add a love traingle?
There is no love triangle. Eowyn tries to love Aragorn, but her love is unrequited, because Aragorn's heart will always be with Arwen. This is a more visual representation of Eowyn's destiny to live in Gondor with Faramir, and Eowyn's musical theme actually incorporates motifs from Gondor's theme, instead of Rohan.

Unfortunate, but Gimli has genuine moments that I think overshadow his comedic ones.
>His first scenes in the White Council
>His mourning of the death of Balin
>I asked for a single hair from her golden head... she gave me three
>Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an Elf. "And how about side by side with a friend?" Ay, I could do that.
>etc etc

There you go. The books read with soundscapes and music from the films.

sure guy

>gives rationalizations
Are you retarded? I know what the rationalizations are but they suck ass and feel bad when watching.
THE ONLY readon why so much material was left out is because they decided to fit it into 3 movies.
Was the Tom Bombadil segment not worthy of making? Was the wolf attacks when gendalf first showed his strength not worth showing? It was and amazing scene which would have translated perfectly into the movies.

They needed at least 1 more movie's length.
Yes they had issues with timing and where to end each segment but i dont care about excuses or limitations. I dont want to chop jackson's head off but a fact is a fact. They butchered a lot of the material and made some segments unwatchable. Like the cringe love triangle. Like how obnoxious aragorn is. He is literally a post modern character...
How they shifted theoden into being just garbage before the spell on him was removed and after.
It makes no fucking sense even within the contrived "hollywoodian character arc" because after he is unfrozen he still remains a passive shitter even though the events demand him to now be the opposite of what he was when under Sauron's spell.

>apparently Sup Forums is still sucking on jackson's cock
This is the same as Sup Forums and the witcher 3.
People are starved for X and when someone gives them a really bad version of X they still clap just because it resembles X at least a bit.
Jackson's rendition of LOTR is very very lacking.

Tom Bombadil is a meme character. Even Tolkien himself regretted putting him in.

Okay, the movie as an independent entity is a masterpiece and is among the greatest movies ever made. What the fuck do you want, dude?

You need to separate the two things in your mind. The books are some of the best literature ever written. But the book is not the movie, and the movie is not the book. You wouldn't hate your second son because he isn't your first, would you?

>stupid analogies are stupid
The movies are only passable, especially from the mid second to the end of the third.
The books are great all the way through and are uncompromising.

>this thread and this OP
is this what autism is like?

>swept the fucking Oscars and made history as the first and only fantasy movie to ever even win a single one
>passable

I'm sorry man, but you're lost. The books are become your Ring, your precious, and your blinding admiration for it and only it has tainted your perception of everything else. Let it go, Bilbo.

>legolas skateboards off some stairs

>gimli quips

there is treatment against autism and medication

Try real hard, and just imagine seeing Tom fucking Bombadil dance his midget ass across the screen. That hippy singing retard plopping his massive boots all over the place talking nonsense. Fuck that.

Also, we DID get Bombadil in the movies. He was called Treebeard. It also highlights how the two were pretty much the same character in the books too.

Bombadil is a shit character anyway, and raises more questions than he answers. People not familiar with the books would wonder why the fuck this all powerful being doesn't help in the war that will kill them all, and his motivations for why he does it in the book was clearly an appeal the his kids that he wrote it for. If the movie was to ever be taken seriously as epic fantasy, he simply could not be a part of it.

>"hollywoodian character arc"
Not to mention that, in screenwriters' minds, the only way to resolve any personal issues is with a crisis. For example, Treebeard deciding not to help until he sees the desolation of Isengard, or Faramir being all ready to hand over the hobbits to his crazy dad until he sees the sacking of Osgiliath.

Please, I love the movies but they are absolutely not good adaptations of the books.

>Bombadil juxtaposed with important

I will say that it would have been more important to see how large the Shire was, to include the Barrow Downs, and to have the Scouring of the Shire. They could have done without Bombadil, even though there's no reason to not include him (they have to escape the Barrows somehow)

serious question: did you even watch the movies?

>aragorn
Ruined(made into a sniveling nu male)
>gimli
Ruined(made into a joke)
>theoden
Ruined(Turned him into a cowerd)
>Denethor
Ruined(turned him into a mental case)
>Aragorn Arwen and elornd's segments
Ruined(turnd elrond into some jeleous father trying to prevent his daughter from being with aragorn despite the fact she was already engaged to him and elrond loved Aragorn)
>Saruman
Ruined. (was made to be Under the spell of Sauron instea of simply deciding to put things into order using the enemy's tools because thye have not been successful at stopping evil for thousands of years now).
>Legolas
Retarded skateboarding scene

Serious answer: watched the regular and extended versions.

Why do you even ask? You dont even need to read the books to notice that spomething about how theoden was written in the script was retarded. Nor do you need to read the books to see that gimli's character was completely off in terms of tone.

Lmao if theoden was originally going go go out and fight against sarumans orcs after his lands were ravaged during 'illness', then hes a fuckin idiot. Smart king protects his people and moves to the fortress.
But lemme guess thats not macho retard brave enough? Would it help if he drove a ford f150 into battle with a 6pack of bud light while jerking it to fake blonde women with DD tits and no ass

>skateboarding
wrong movies retard

Rewatch two towers moron

The point is that in the books gendalf advised him to retreat to the fortress and theoden agreed but in the movies he is shown to be weak. All the "good" characters are sort of meh at him for going to that fortress.
I would have had less issues if when he said he is gonna go to the fortress gendalf and aragorn would have said how wise a choice that was or something.
Jackson and friends simply decided to wreck theoden and use him as a way to bolester Aragorn because his actor decided to make him a post modern nu male instead of a medieval knight.

>the transmission of the story to the visual medium was damn-near perfect
very funny. we all know the reality is the books are great and the movies are trash
no, and a ten episode season for each of the 6 books.

You just described the problems of film as a medium. Adapting literature to film is like adapting movies to videogames; can't be done. Movies are ultimately a plebeian form of entertainment.

Bookfags really are a blight

>All these fucking plebs circlejerking some linguists prose he used to fill space between poems written in his made up autist languages.

IT IS ALREADY A 3 HOUR MOVIE

the movies are an adaptation of the books, not exact copies, that would be pointless.

What a joke. Fact is 99% of lotr fans would want a more true to book depiction with all the dialogues and events.

Bombadil is pure nonsense, and obviously completely superfluous

Why? You already have the books for that, These movies reach a bigger public. it was made for the normal people who didn't even know what LOTR was.

watched Fellowship yesterday after many years, amazing piece of filmmaking, holds up incredibly well

Why didn't gimli try hit it again

Who's the bigger autist:
>Lotr hater samefaging this thread desperate for attention
or
>guys actually debating him thinking they are going to change his mind with their long elaborate replies

But for example not ruining theoden as a character would in no way diminish even your supposed purpose.

Did jackson even include any of the songs? Some songs are simple and meant to be that way but some are great and touching..

Anything that was even a bit complex and challenging about the characterization or plot or atmosphere was simplified or removed.

The books were quite flawed to be honest. The story is offcourse legendary but most dialoges were bad and stiff. Bombadill would have been fun though

Really what the books need is just an animated version. Meaning the book is read and you see pictures and animations and you get a good narration and music/sounds.

>most dialoges were bad and stiff
Are you actually serious?

Yes and I though that was common knowledge. Maybe not most but there were a lot of strange parts if I remember correctly and the books had many side plots that didn't contribute anything to the main story. And in TFOTR they basicly walked around the shire and helped Frodo move for nothing like half the book

>So you didnt mind how Théoden was made into a cowered pussy?

Now silently the host of Rohan moved forward into the field of Gondor, pouring in slowly but steadily....

After a while the king led his men away somewhat eastward, to come between the fires of the siege and the outer fields. Still they were unchallenged, and still Théoden gave no signal.... A smell of burning was in the air and a very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him.... They were too late! Too late was worse than never!....

Then suddenly Merry felt it at last, beyond doubt: a change. Wind was in his face! Light was glimmering....

But at that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white, its topmost tower like a glittering needle: and then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great boom.

At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before

How about you read the fucking book and then talk instead of the wiki? Theoden, like all men, had self doubts. But when push came to shove he was /ourguy/

Well its about the feeling of time. Its the same when you contrast the books and the movie. In the movie they teleport half the map in a few minutes but in the books you feel the time and the shire was a needed exposition to get you acquainted with the hobbits and set up the contrast that is to follow.
If you compare it ot games then you can have an open world rpg or a linear one. I would say that LOTR is very much like a linear RPG with a few small side quests that grant you rewards in the form of more knowledge and atmosphere.

>thread literally full of people whos first and only exposure to lotr was through the films.
sad.

>made into a joke
Only agreeable point
>made to be Under the spell of Sauron
I don't remember this happening in the movies. Didn't he tell Gandalf his motivations while they were in Isengard in Fellowship?

If you only agree with that rewatch the movies and reread the books.
Saruman in the books told gendalf that he wants to be the ruler and with gendalf even if they support sauron they can slowly shift events according to their desires or if they can get the ring they will rule middle earth themselves and get rid of sauron.

what's wrong with Witcher 3? don't get me wrong, sure it's not a 100% perfect game but still leagues better than other similar games.

>based on absolute garbage tier literature
>horrific combat system
>very limited rpg system
>handholding with markers and other normie underage crap and turning it off doesnt work since the game was not built with no markers in mind

if you're going to make TLOTR in under 10 hours, Bombadil HAS to go, there's just no way around it. the Fellowship in the book already takes forever to even get to Bree, and the whole Bombadil part, as nice as it is, just brings the whole story to a grinding halt and doesn't add anything to the rest of the story.

How would modern Sup Forums react to this scene?

Right user, I read your post again and I have to say your Denethor/Elrond points make sense. Somehow missed the Legolas one, too.
The Theoden one I'm on the fence about, but it's been a while since I've read the books

>Bombadil
>not a complete waste of time
come on now stop your messing

>Sameness: Resistance to change
This is literal autism

>flawed adaption of a great book is still one of the best movies ever made
So are movies confirmed to be the plebeian medium? The one thing that I really like about the movies is the soundtrack, otherwise I would take the books any day of the week.
