I just saw it again for the second time and I think the biggest issue is that so much of the movie just feels pointless, and also buildup from TFA also feels pointless.
There's a difference between using a red herring and pulling the rug out of your viewers feet just because. Snoke wasn't shown at all in physical form in TFA for a reason, they used plagieus music from episode III with him too.
Also what was the point of Rey going in the dark side pit on the island? Literally nothing happened, you could cut that shit out and nothing would change. How is Snoke just nobody? A man doesn't just be that old, that fucking powerful, and important, and his story not matter. If you are an emperor you were born to be emperor and you are a special individual who did special things. Casting snoke aside to pull the rug out under the viewers feet was fucking horrible decision.
Also I'm tired of fanboys and literal Disney shills trying to damage control and brush aside every criticism of the movie. Constant damage control and how everyone is just wrong, but most feel similarly.

How come there was so little Reylo screen time?
Carson Phillips
>Also what was the point of Rey going in the dark side pit on the island? I guess letting her lose hope that Luke will actually help her, so that she gets tempted by Kylo If I'm wrong, sorry I'm drunk

the movie has a lot of good ideas, and chunks of the movie are good, but when it's looked at as a whole, it suffers and when you consider that it's a starwars movie it is made further worse when the plot tears apart star wars lore, science, and themes.

This is probably the most coherent and level headed post I have ever seen on this god forsaken board

Johnson deliberately devalued or threw out literally everything Abrams setup for the sake of cheap shock value. He also borrows quite a bit from TESB while completely disregarding the rules of the universe and completes the destruction of whatever was left of the Original Trilogy. Maybe it would be forgivable if there were an actual reason for this and he contributed something of value to replace what he destroyed, though he literally leaves nothing left to explore minus a villain that was already defanged in the first installment of this horribly misguided trilogy. And with Abrams back we're also guaranteed some retcons and a retread of Return of the Jedi (aka basically another TFA).

This should have been done like 33 from battlestar. Jump after jump, they're always shortly behind. Leaves room for battles in different locales, interesting planetary systems and what not. Cut Rose, send Finn, with 3PO as a translator, on some sidequest but make it actually worth a shit.
Charles Thomas
you are ok :)

Totally agree, user. It really felt like a whole lot of nothing was going on. Every subplot felt like it belonged in a different movie or didn't affect the other ones at all. And then of course there's the brushing aside of all the characters and plots people were excited for (Snoke, Rey's parents, Knights of Ren) for a pointless romance, casino shenanigans, and a bitchy admiral bickering with a pilot instead. What was the point of this crap?

As Rich Evans said, it's sporadically interesting. It had somewhat high highs and very low lows. I think the most frustrating thing about it is how it almost goes in interesting directions and then chickens out. Like:
1. Finn sacrificing himself to stop the death star laser would have been a perfect end for the character. The part where he's flying into the beam and his ship is literally melting away around him was the only time in the film I emotionally connected with a character outside of Rey and Kylo. The coward becoming so brave he dies for the cause is perfect and I believe it was the original plan for Han Solo, who Finn mirrors.
2. The idea that rich war profiteers are the real villains should have been dug into more.
3. Rey should have worked with Kylo and he shouldn't have had that stupid "We'll be together, but first I kill all of your friends" line. It would be the tightest shit if these two superhumans just commanded both sides to stand down and the next movie was them building a new order without Jedi or Sith, completely free of the Empire and the Republic.

But mommy when are they gonna have space battles and laser sword fights?
Rich Evans was right, this would be too smart for Star Wars

That's another thing, thank you for pointing it out. Where the fuck were the knights of ren?

Just saw the movie. It was decent-good. Not as good as the critics claim it to be. I like it better than the first one.
Negatives: - First 1/3rd is trash. Shitty Marvel humor, uninteresting flight choreography, bad simple dialogue - That Leia scene in outer space was horrendous. - General Hux is a useless waste of space. A villain needs to be threatening. - Snoke is wasted potential. Why build him up to just kill him off? Whatever, his character design was bad. Kylo killing him is okay but it should've been done in the 3rd movie. - Shitty Marvel humor. Examples: I'm from Jakku. Hurrr, that is in the middle of the nowhere. Dusting off his coat like a moron after the beam barrage. It already looked impressive, why ruin the moment with that shitty audience wink? - Holdo, the character, is alright but bad character design. Purple-haired spook. - The ending scene with the boy is so on-the-nose. Blah. Yeayea, new generation, zzz. - The Finn/Rose kiss scene was so awkward.
Positives: - Movie stands on its own and brings forth new things instead of being a copypaste like the previous movie - I like how they handled Rey & Kylo's characters, and to a lesser degree Luke. He left the series on a graceful note. Content, peaceful and determined, as a protector of hope. Rey is less Mary Sue-ish, gaining character flaws, clinging to parent figures. Her feats weren't overwhelming and she didn't steal the spotlight from Luke. - Glad they addressed and killed off Brienne's character. That awful subplot is out of the way. - Humor that worked: Rey reaching out for the Force, slashing the stone that fell downwards. Fitted the scene. - Boyega's acting improved - Rose was a nice character surprisingly. Hair looks stupid. Sad her actress is ugly/frumpy. - Hacker character was a nice character too.
Jose Butler
I agree that a team-up would be better, if only because it would make for more complex characters and morality. It even seemed to head into that direction, they had a connection. But I guess the writers want their final showdown or something.
Logan Cox
They could have the war profiteers using droid armies to try to agitate and get the war going again and Luke fighting Rey and Kylo because he's so dead set on the light side/dark side dichotomy. There are ways to introduce action into the story.
Owen Hill

always good to start off your argument with a tautology
Liam Peterson
The only time I felt a decent amount of emotion was in the scene at the end where they played the immolation theme track from 3 as the Empire was charging the beam. And it was only because it was the track from 3, I believe it was that track correct me if I am wrong.

Ironically enough, marvels next avengers will be twice the movie this was. And have an actual villain.

This. Rey had NO reason to turn down Kylo's offer to join sides. I'd type a paragraph about this, but I'm on my phone.

>Rose was a nice character surprisingly. Hair looks stupid. Sad her actress is ugly/frumpy.
>have an entire sub-plot taking place on a casino planet, basically grinding the entire movie to a complete stop, just so she could have a moment to make a speech about 'evil rich people' and how animal cruelty is wrong >have her "free the animals" by letting them go on a rampage throughout the city, causing an absurd amount of damage, potentially even getting people injured/killed >acts as if pissing off an entire city full of rich people was a good idea, in a universe where it has already been established that bounty hunters and crime lords with a whole network of people exist >has one cheesy fucking line of "now it's all been worth it" before fleeing the planet, while all the alien horses she thinks she just "saved" are actually still stranded on the planet somewhere, just a few miles outside from the city they just wrecked, easily to be caught and put back into their cages in a matter of days >and surely the same pissed off rich people are gonna go easy on the animals now, with all the damage/injury they just caused them, right? >pretty much everything she does from this point until the end of the movie goes wrong and/or puts everyone around her into even more danger than they were in before
I mean, not even going into how she looks and acts like she got lost on her way to the set of 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World', rather than being a intentional choice for a Star Wars movie, in what way was she a 'nice' character?
Chase Cooper
This could actually have salvaged the garbage fire, right at the end, and leave something to look forward to for the next one.

Is gembutts any good?

who thought having the entire rebellion (hahah) on a few ships slowly being chased by a few other ships was a worthwhile plot for star wars movie??
Rey on Luke World was fine and her stuff was Kylo was fine everything...toss out and start over. if anything Rian should have done a time skip and say it was a few months since events of Force Awakens.
Hudson Clark
no it won't .

I'm still trying to wrap my head around that statement. Is this how the universe breaks.....
