Luv is the biggest perpetrator of dishonesty in Blade Runner 2049. Denis framed the character as the anti-thesis to Star Wars’ Captain Phasma in order to capitalize on the various aspects of disappointment surrounding that character. Luv’s arc is full of nonsensical plot points that reach their pinnacle when she’s able to infliltrate a futuristic police station not once, but twice. Her first escapade left an officer brutally victimized and the ramifications of that murder are nonexistent. She wanders into the police station yet again and murders the police captain to no avail, no opponents to greet her before or after the deed. In this narrative choice Denis has made the world of Blade Runner 2049 feel clautosphobic, closed out in an almost dreamlike state reminiscent of the nightmares as a child you used to have where you’re attempting to catch something but you just can’t, only to ultimately be bombarded with utter dishonesty.
Luv’s narrative shortcomings are masked by Villeneuve’s preemptive decision to create a subtle romantic dynamic between Luv and K, the latter serving as a self-insert for the male audience, whom will undoubtedly find the idea of a killer robot secretly harboring a misguided obsession with them endearing. Denis is a master at appealing to the IMDb-core crowd and he’s just getting started, Dune destined to become the peak of this endeavor. Quite frankly, you should be disgusted.

To accept Villeneuve as a quality director is to garb yourself in a coat of hot pockets and video games and then writhe around on the ground in a supermarket while screeching and slapping yourself on the sides of your head.
