Peter Alan David (PAD)

What is it that makes him one of the best writers?

Nothing, he's terrible.

He understands most of the characters he writes, and he does it very well.

Even Ben Reilly? No.

The fact that the other writers are just THAT bad?

His hatred of gypsies

I enjoyed his latest X-Factor run, which sold wonderful in trades but not in floppies. Other than his Hulk stuff I am not a diehard faggot of his work. He is talented, but not the best. His Aquaman was shit.

He cares about continuity, is usually careful and respectful when other peoples' characters make appearances in his books, writes actual jokes as opposed to quips, is good at finding the interesting facet of even terrible characters.

Not that he's perfect (I mean he wrote that whole awful furfag pregnancy storyline) but next to Bendis I'd give him carte blanche over the X-books any day,

>furfag pregnancy storyline
Wut

The fact he made Shatterstar gay which pissed off Liefeld is more than enough to make me a fan.

The part of his brain that should be focused on his own finances is devoted to writing.

Hey he got that from Slott. He needs to write a good paced return to form.

You know that shitty style that 95% of Marvel books are written in right now? This is the guy they're trying to emulate, only they do it all wrong.

He's got the mutant power to make people give a shit about characters that fans and editorial had written off years earlier.

X-Factor, second half of the second run.

Gypsy curse

>which sold wonderful in trades but not in floppies
It sold 23k when they cancelled it and it was stable there. Captain Marvel is selling 17k right now and dropping. I'll never forgive Marvel for cancelling All-New X-Factor. That shit was great.

This might be the case.
If you have a D-List character, PAD will make a sitcom-esque epic starring them.

He'd be great on D-Man, Namor, Adam Warlock, or any other character Marvel can't make work.

Hell, just give him a Hank Pym book.

There is no return to form for this new Scarlet Spider character. He's not the Ben Reilly we lost in the 90s. He's a supervillain, and currently a less interesting version of Deadpool.

He's not perfect, but in generally he's quite good.
My favorite are his Hulk (90s) and his Spider-man 2999. One of the best spider men I've ever read. One thing that I appreciate a lot, PAD knows continuity and respects it, often by highlighting the stories made by those who preceded him.

Didn't Kyle/Yost set that up though? Why the fuck did they do that anyway?

How are his taxes coming along?

Do you mean this?

>Yeah, I wrote an issue ofX-Factorinvolving the concept that pregnant women could determine whether or not their child was going to be a mutant, and, if so, terminate the pregnancy. The whole story was about, you know, was basically a choice or no choice proposition. After I had written the script, which Marvel absolutely loved, they then came back to me and said, “No, sorry, we can’t do it. We can’t do anything controversial anymore.” They wound up gutting the story. I quit the book shortly after that.

>The part of his brain that should be focused on his own finances is devoted to writing.
Seriously though, are you going to pay his taxes?
Please respond.

Today, his story about AIDS would be rejected, though there is nothing outrageous in it. Fucking stupid times.

I was thinking of the Wolfsbane pregnancy story-line, where she shacked up with a wolf-god.

Marvel has a higher standard for x-books.
The AIDS story wouldn't even work today because in the US you can live a long, full life with medication.

Agreed. Was fresh and interesting, made Gambit likable again as well.

I didn't realize writing above mediocre capeshit made someone one of the best.

Which one user? He wrote three in Hulk.

What's everyone's favorite issue he's written?

>Marvel has a higher standard for x-books.
I'm sure Polaris, Danger, Warlock and Cipher were in hot fucking demand. Gambit, also. He didn't appear in anything for years after if I remember correctly.
I know they needed Quicksilver to write the blockbuster story of how the cow lied to have movie synergy and to shit on Fox.

Still didn't need to cancel the fucking book.

The book even had good art for fucking once. PAD usually gets smitten with the shittiest artists. I couldn't even read 2099 anymore.

>He didn't appear in anything for years after if I remember correctly.
PAD himself noted that the failure of All New X-Factor and the Gambit solo series that directly preceded it was all the proof Marvel needed that he was no longer the draw they thought he was.

While I agree on the solo, I just never knew Marvel would consider a book the breaks 20,000 buys a failure. Especially considering the sales of some of their books they force down our throats. Given that with how well the TPB sold and how well it was received I really think X-Factor getting canceled was a mistake.

He doesn't write like he's embarrassed to be writing comics. He may be a bit old fashioned now in that his stuff isn't about leading up to some 'big revelation that will change the character FOREVER' but he's comfy & who the hell is left at Marvel who writes like that?

He made Marlo do a porno flick, that whole scene involving the Bachelor party is classic.

>His Aquaman was shit.
That was all on editor Kevin Dooley giving him conflicting directives on a month to month basis.

>He didn't appear in anything for years after if I remember correctly.

Other than his own miniseries.

The way just saying his name triggers scans_daily.

>approve of a storyline that would turn Aquaman into a water elemental
>build up to it over a long period of time, including guest spots from the other elementals, Swampy and Buddy
>cancel it at the last minute, have the last issue rewritten so the conflict resolves and everything's back to status quo
>hire one of the writer's known enemies (Erik Larsen) as a replacement and let him shit all over the previous run
Classic DC.

>hire one of the writer's known enemies (Erik Larsen) as a replacement and let him shit all over the previous run

Ya know whats weird? I heard they buried the hatchet over who they were both burned by DC over Aquaman.

I never got the appeal of Larsen's work personally (as a writer). His art seems a bit lazy as well. Good for him for making a shit ton of money but his stuff on Aquaman, Wolverine and even Nova was just not well done.

He knows the truth about gypsies.

Which is?

The issue of X-Factor ( 90's run) where everyone goes to therapy.

Peter David writes the best Quicksilver

This is why Magneto being Quicksilver's father should still be canon.

He pointed out Romani culture treat homosexuals horribly, which was true. He also wrote a blog about how some Romani gypsies broke the legs of their children so they heal poorly and makes more of an impact when they beg for change. Which again, is true. People just want something to bitch about at the end of the day regardless of facts. His only crime using gross generalization and blanket statements instead of saying 'some' or 'a few'. That was it.

I'm still salty about that. scans_daily was good back then.

>The book even had good art for fucking once. PAD usually gets smitten with the shittiest artists. I couldn't even read 2099 anymore.
Shit-talking Sliney, whilst calling Giando's puke/grey-colored-3d-models art good? Fuck off, man.

That was an ongoing.

He actually tells stories rather than SJW agendas.

IIRC after it got nuked scans_daily's creator said "fuck it" and new people, some who came from girl-wonder.org and were ultra crazy proto-SJW and Stephanie Brown fans came in and re-established it in dreamwidth and pretty much drove away most of the original members and brought some crazy assholes.

Also their ethos was confusing and shit. I got a warning for saying "Fucking Bendis" there but a white woman mod could school a black guy about racial politics, or a transwoman could scream and shit on Gail Simone and be nasty towards her but because Gail didn't back down from her stance the transwoman rage quit and Gail was banned for it.

I miss his Young Justice

Also, he doesn't try to be bombastic. Not every story has to be the end of the world

He's the next stop on the DC apology tour.

>Peter David Hank Pym book

I fucking wish.

hes one of the last real Marvel veterans left, besides him and Conway, who else is left

I think that's it.

he'd make a compelling storyline for hank to keep beating janet

I am the only Danger fan in the planet

She/It has been missing in action for a long time, even though she was a high council member of Cyclop's Utopia, is pretty powerful, and could have been useful against the Inhumans.
But then, X-Man and many many characters have been MIA for years.

Danger's all right, especially PAD's slut Danger who made sexual advances on everybody.

He was the best American capeshit writer in the 90s along with Ostrander. If you need to reinvent a B or C lister to popularity, he was the man. He wrote the only good Aquaman and Hulk runs, and at a time when both were struggling to have anything good. DC and Marvel should hand him Cyborg and Captain Marvel to revitalize them.

It really was.
I used to hang out at the original scans_daily. They were always up-front about it being originally created by female fans with an interest in slash and their rules were basically 'we've got lots of female members who like it when dudes fuck, don't be a dick to them'. Good threads had hundreds of responses, with lots of interesting debate and arguments and disagreements. As long as you weren't a creeper or a massive douche, you were welcome and could say pretty much anything to anyone.

After the community moved to dreamwidth, it went to shit fast and just hemorrhaged members. I stopped going there a long time ago, but I went back shortly after the US election just to take a look around. The old scans_daily had threads with hundreds of replies. This one has maybe 30 responses in the biggest threads. All they've done is strangle discussion and drive away hundreds of supporters.

As says, they even ran off comic creators. To elaborate a little, Simone was driven off because she had the temerity to defend herself from being called out (one of their new rules was if one member 'called you out' for problematic behaviour, you were not allowed to defend yourself). That's significant, because Simone used to love scans_daily on LJ and visited it frequently.
