How would you "fix" prisons

It baffles me that prisons are such a shit show. I can't comprehend ever acting the way inmates do in prison.

If you really want to fix prisons, bring back prison colonies.
Put the prisoners to work doing agricultural work for 10 hours a day. If my taxes are going to feed and house them, they should be producing something.

Many prisoners have IQs below 70.
For comparison, great apes trained by researchers have been tested to have IQs in the 75-80 range.

I would replace all prisons with mental health institutions and all gaurds with mental health professonals. Criminals arent evil they are simply mentally ill. Also mental health institutions are much better at stopping suicides which is the biggest prison problem

Do you not realize that it's in the prison's best interest to keep inmates divided as possible?
Keeping inmates segregated by race/gang affiliation/etc. is intentional and desired. The divide and conquer strategy is literally the only thing that keeps the prison system running smoothly. It's far better to have the inmates fight each other than to unite against the correction officers running the place. If it was just inmates vs guards then there would be absolute chaos.

Constantly rotate prisoners into different cells. Doesn't allow them to make strong social bonds with other prisoners. If they were already gang members before, force them to accept a new identity in a new place (((South Dakota)))

Unban cigarettes and marijuana. Allow prisoners to smoke in designated areas at certain times of the day. Everyone using hard drugs will be isolated in detox and forced to complete a 12 step program or spend their sentence locked in a dark closet.

People are always going to fight in prison and prison rape is a meme. No one gets raped in jail, there's niggas in there giving it away.

Trustees can work civilian jobs for half of that employer's starting pay. Half goes to the prison, half goes to their commissary. This would also help to keep them in line because they want to keep their jobs so they can afford soda and cigarettes and phone calls. Some prisons do this and call it work release.
t. almost did a year in jail for getting in a fight with my brother, ended up getting the case thrown out as self defense. Spent about a month in the county.
Don't believe in imprisonment. If they pose such a risk to the community that it warrants being locked up, just kill them. Anything else, just beat the shit out of them and let them go.
It's not that hard to design a structure that is nearly impossible to escape regardless of prisoner cooperation.

Make them non-profit. In fact, make them anti-profit. If no one makes money off of putting people in prison, then we'd be more likely to come up with a better, more creative way of dealing with the dregs of society.

Inmates should be used to perform any manual or low skilled labor paid for by taxpayer money

It has less to do with escape and more to do with guard safety.

I think the most humane thing to do is maroon felons in a walled off island. Located in the tropic or subtropic so they can live outside and eat the plentiful root vegetables year round.
