As other anons have said: he's vain. Very self-conscious about his appearance, and he his an approach to keeping it the way he's comfortable with it, and thinks other people will be.

This is a good thing. Vanity is a sin, but it's a very small vice. Vanity at least seeks the approval of others. Pride, on the other hand, seeks approval from no one.
