Star Wars isn't just a thing for socially alienated white men/boys anymore. It's grown beyond that little niche, and it also needs to lose the baggage associated with whiteness/maleness to reach a larger audience and have more influence.
Lots of the lessons and teachings embodied by Luke Skywalker are white, masculine and western in character. They've been done to death. The monomyth, Joseph Campbellian structure is dated and stale, and it can't keep running on those fumes forever.
I sympathize with lots of the grumbling white male neckbeards are doing. Star Wars was their thing and they don't want to share their beloved toys. And they're obviously gonna hate The Last Jedi because, in essence, it's about how Luke's legend really was flawed and limited in its scope.
The Jedi philosophy, just like the phallocentric white male western patriarchy, was bogged down in its own dogma. There's something beautiful and touching about the sentiment of "passing the torch" in TLJ. The white western male, long held as the only source of heroism and power in the canon, gracefully steps aside not only for his own good, but for the good of the universe.
In more diverse and progressive hands, there's no telling what this universe, and the force along with it, might become. It's an exciting prospect, to say the least, for those who aren't embittered neckbeards living in their parents' basements.
TLJ is going to be a watershed moment in sci-fi and genre films generally. It's all about letting go, letting your creation grow beyond you. And Star Wars, like civilization itself, has evolved beyond its parochial and patriarchal past.

How would you make Sana an interesting character?

I liked The Last Jedi. It was not perfect, but I liked it.

Jayden Turner
Same. I have problems with it, but the Luke/Rey/Kylo side of it gave it a stronger (if still flawed) core. It somewhat makes up for the weakness of the whole Poe/Finn/Rose/Holdo/Hux B plot, which needed another revision or two.

Snoke looked different to me in TLJ and I can't place why. It's not even just the wardrobe change, something about his face felt different.

Honestly its a tough one. Im not opposed to her existing, but at least make her fun or interesting or something goddamn.
Sana and Aphra both feel very much like Marvel said "Yo Kathleen, the OT is looking too white and male, can we add some extra characters" - But Gillen actually put effort into Aphra to make her fun enough to carry her own little adventures.
Sana is just... there. She is "black woman who was always a part of the OT crew, you just didn't know it until now!" but with no actual interesting stories or personality or anything.
Just... DO SOMETHING WITH HER, ANYTHING, holy shit. She is from the criminal underworld, so have her get into trouble with old rivals and bounty hunters. Or have her be more brutal and cause some contention and drama with Leia. I mean she's gotta get kicked out of the crew eventually right. Hera being at Hoth is one thing, but Sana is literally flying around on the Falcon, you can't just pretend she was offscreen during ESB.

Luke being so grumpy never did sit right with me, but it was okay. Just okay. I would be okay with some grumpiness and unwillingness, but I felt they swung him just a bit too far in that direction. Other than that, I agree.

This is kind of how I feel. The B plot is what dragged the movie down for me, it felt like Rian had a solid idea of what he wanted to do with the Force-wielders but didn't really know what to do with the rest of the cast and came up with an awkward side plot that doesn't really come together and doesn't really help develop any of its characters.

>Nothing in the story has changed The whole thing would have to change though. If Obi Wan had a personality close to Qui-Gon's, the entire story changes. Qui-Gon would never be put on the council. Remember that movie Obi thinks Qui-Gon wastes too much time fucking around with "pathetic lifeforms" like Jar Jar and Anakin.

Holy shit, I love both cartoons, can we stop?
It's gotten to the point where instead of "X looks better than Y", you're saying "Y looks worse than X" which is petty bullshit - Both shows look fantastic and there are picturesque examples of flawless use of both artstyles. And both shows can also be cherrypicked to look unflattering too.
TCW has a higher budget and thus more potential for busier frames and smaller details, but Rebel's simpler artstyle works in the shows favor too, especially with the tone and relevancy of the setting and era.
Now get over it and enjoy both shows like a proper /swco/ gentlemen.
Jack Lopez
How can you say that when the TCW characters are literal wooden blocks? I mean even if you look at the Rebels models, they have objectively higher polycounts and higher res textures than any TCW model, no matter how good.
Joseph Phillips
>But Gillen actually put effort into Aphra to make her fun enough to carry her own little adventures. >Just... DO SOMETHING WITH HER, ANYTHING I feel the same way. Aphra at least has a distinguishable character that makes for some fun interactions when she joins up with the main cast. Sana really doesn't. What exactly does she bring to the Luke-Leia-Han dynamic that justifies a fairly big place in the mainline comic? I wonder if they're building to something or are they just freewheeling.
Daniel Hill

Luke not getting a cool action scene is fucking terrible, Luke losing to Rey is fucking terrible, Luke not having a son is fucking terrible, Luke not establishing a New Jedi Order is fucking terrible, The Last Jedi is ok.

Why bother remaking them when you can import them and slightly change them? It's like you want to waste money making new assets from scratch for every single thing.

turning Luke into a parricidal coward who can't face what he did, doesn't try to correct his mistakes, and leaves Han and Leia to die, might be the worst fucking thing ever in Star Wars.

I’m not totally sure, but it seems like they made him slightly less pale. It’s hard to tell what color he was in the first due to lighting. I kind of like that they gave him a much lighter color palette than most darksiders.
