We still had a good laugh, but it was mostly laughing at the terrible, terrible dub than the episodes themselves. How anyone in France can support those terrible high pitch unfitting voices for more than an episode or two is beyond me. And it's not like I usually dislike France French voice overs, I've watched and enjoyed plenty of France cartoons with their original voices, it really is just their Simpsons dub that is beyond putrid tier for some godforsaken reason.

our dub isn't that good (did they really have to change new york for fucking lac-st-jean), but it has a really nostalgic quality

Yeah, if I recall it was Bart the General and another episode. But I caught a more recent episode later on on a trip to France (like, from season 10+) and it was still terrible. Especially Homer.
I actually don't mind our dub trying to localize some of the jokes, especially because a kid watching here would have no idea what an Albany or Utica is. Though sometimes they change references to American TV stars to TQS stars from the time and watching the episode years later, you have absolutely zero idea who they're talking about because that person hasn't been relevant for over a decade.
