We got a bigger chapter out this week. It's all about Marco's backstory (some of it anyway).
Should be a good time, enjoy!
Bentley Taylor
How do I tastefully insert memes into my comic?
Owen Howard
if a casual reader can understand the story without knowing the meme, you should be fine
Jose Peterson
>What kind of audience do you want reading your comic? People who draw a shit ton of fanart I need my ego fed
Aiden Roberts
>What kind of audience do you want reading your comic? Uhhhhh, I sort of want the people who would make a lot fanart, but unfortunately since some of my characters have an easy to reproduce template, I'm worried I'll get those people who make persona characters. Like SU, MLP, Furries, etc, the ghost characters in my comic are easy enough to alter and create OCs. I'd like to avoid a toxic and cancerous fandom.
Case in point, here's Marco's ghostsona. Took me like, a minute. It breaks some of MY rules of drawing ghosts, but this is just to prove a point.
I draw it in microsoft paint. The main characters are fruit
Asher Peterson
are you making fun of me? lol
also lets get into this debate. so far ive only shown mushroom and leaf people. or rather herbs and vegetables. allow me to argue my proof real quick...
mushrooms are a vegetable much like potatoes and carats. but tomatoes although accepted as vegetables are actually a fruit., i would also argue that corn is a fruit, anything that holds juice or water is a fruit in my opinion. if you bite into it and its juicy its a fruit.
foliage like lettuce leaves are also considered to be vegetables. BUT i would argue lettuce, marijuana, oregano, tea leaves are all herbs. not vegetables.
fight me on this user!
Dominic Turner
i forgot to mention the reason im claiming mushrooms are a vegetable like a potato or a carrot is, is because both are seedless and can grow and multiply in your pantry if gone unchecked.
Nathan Brooks
Furries who don't draw porn and give money because they are billionaires aka people who don't exist. BWAHAHAHA!
John Ross
I really don't know what you mean, and really don't want to get into it online. You're free to believe what you want it helps you sleep at night.
Btw, is the artwork in the post yours? It looks really good.
I might post my comic later, and I'm prepared for anons to call it shit and tell me to kms. All apart of the Sup Forums cesspool I guess. I know its not good. It just makes me feel good to share my thoughts in comic form
Anthony Roberts
>Thread Question: What kind of audience do you want reading your comic? people who like violent seinen-y action but also enjoy the lighter parts of life like friendship and comedy.
Mushrooms are neat in the context of being nigh-universal decomposers an model neural networks.
But they aren't vegetables. Vegetables is a culinary rather than taxonomic term so imprecision is to be expected (a tomato is a berry for instance but is often considered a vegetable) but no one ever classes herbs, spices, fungi, or cereals as vegies.
So bones, when are your mushroom aliens going to (tip hood).
Aiden Miller
Well we love it, it looks cute. Thanks dude.
Alexander White
>(tip hood).
HOLY SHIT!
am... am i really that fucking predictable???????????
wtf??????
on the very next page actually.... the story board is already done and ready to be drawn... thats... exactly what happens on the next page... along with the reveal that they are not really aliens but fairy folk... its a big revelation accompanied by the tips fedora meme but now im not sure if i should put the meme in there because i dont want to be that predictable or easily seen through... fuck...
the u.f.o's and grey alien masks where all part of the deception to keep the realm of the fairies and fairy folk a secret from the humans... damn i cant believe you predicted the next page like that, wtf? lol
Ayden Garcia
You're falling apart. You could've been great but you settled for mediocrity
Parker Sanchez
man why is everyone giving them such a hard time.. Lotta feels in this one
Samuel Johnson
Make them want to know what the hell that means and be happy when they find out Shit, you want sum fanart? I dunno why you dislike persona fandom shit, even if it is a bit silly, but..
Thomas Ramirez
Any suggestions on where to even begin, or the process of making the comic, step by step or suggestions?
>Do I write out a script or a full story then draw? >Do I need really elaborate endless reference sheets of my characters?
I don't even know where to begin.
William Hughes
Surface level stuff is okay with me. They make an OC that loosely connects to the world of the comic, but still would fit. That's fine and I could even get behind them doing fan fic with that OC. Stuff like that is done with the spirit of the world they want to inhabit in mind.
Then you have the "OC BY ME" that would not make sense at all and usually followed with a list of likes and dislikes, a thousand colors splashed on them and perhaps a huge backstory to sound cool, but they'd never do anything with the concept. At the bottom is the self insert which usually is the person's alter ego and they don't bother hiding it. Bonus: it's also a powerfantasy.
I've seen those communities and they can get toxic. I just don't want to be a part of that again.
What's worse, is that I'm actually going to ask people if they want me to insert a ghostsona in a future chapter (soon too) since I'm going to be introducing the rest of the ghosts in the cave city. It's not like I don't already have a few dozen designs on hand already, but I think having some people take part in the comic could be fun.
>inb4 shits on persona fandoms, but then immediately encourages in the next sentence.
Caleb Murphy
>Do I write out a script or a full story then draw? If you're writing a story drived webcomic, abso-fucking-lutely. I have seen dozens of webcomics that all completely fell apart because the artist obviously didn't really have a clear plan in mind and just ended up writing themselves into dozens of brand new sideplots that they had absolutely no hope of hell navigating out of, after which they'll often just spend years doing filler or just fuck off without a word and never come back. You should at the very least have a flow chart or something of your story before you jump into it, a fully written out plot is ideal.
Adrian Richardson
My comic has the potential for basically any character design you can possibly think of, but I imagine if there is some sort of fandom it'll end up like Cuphead, where despite the potential for literally anything, every single OC is an objecthead.
Sebastian Perez
Now I'm curious. Got a link or a pic?
Dylan Johnson
I haven't uploaded it anywhere besides updating here yet because of crippling laziness but basically there's humans and like, 3 different levels of non-humans that range from "Dude with a weird skin color" to "That's a fucking goblin" to "Furries and Eldritch Terrors and everything else inbetween"
The reason for this is mostly because I like drawing weird shit and can't keep a consistent character design aesthetic.
Easton Turner
Don't worry, you'll find out before the end of this arc.
I'm glad you could feel the "feels" in this one. We were really trying to get you emotionally invested.
Benjamin Sanders
Finished this page!
So many characters on this page!
I'm debating weather or not tabitha should be a permanent team member... I'll probably have a straw poll by the end of this chapter.
James Edwards
You must be new here that's bones. don't talk to bones.
Julian Rogers
This panel is taking me longer than I anticipated
Jacob Parker
That's okay, that was definitely the right answer
Alexander Flores
>bones is getting interviewed >dewd has made thousands of his art I used to look down on them, but looks like they're gonna go further than me. Just goes to show, don't judge or whatever. Mother fate keeps throwing lessons at me
Michael Sanders
>bones is getting interviewed Yes, because he asked for an interview from two randos online. >dewd has made thousands of his art Over the course of a month or so, translating to around the same wages someone would make flipping burgers for the same amount of time.
Charles Collins
Late night bump
Brandon Green
More general silliness, plan on introducing new characters this year.
Noah Brown
I'm not sure what to think. It looks pretty nice to me. Is that uncharacteristic of her? Also whoa, missing eye. It has just occurred to me that if I ever lose an eye, fuck eyepatches or glass eyes, I'm just restyling my hair haha nah i'd make some kind of bionic eye and put an LED in it
Jayden Moore
Yep, she's know for more darker themed paintings and drawings, so her drawing an innocent picture like that just ain't right. And about the missing eye, there is something there, but it wont show itself yet.
Brody Sullivan
it's shit, this might pass as cute girls doing cute things but your art is ugly
Caleb Flores
That's a good gag then. It was hard to tell because she seems like a jolly person overall. I'd expect that kind of character to be stereotypically grim and gothy and be all deadpan "how do you like my painting" and its jolliness is creepy because of the contrast. But I'm sure if I read this (you're up to 40 pages, you must have a site. link it?) I'd get the right feeling
Jose Cruz
Ugly is the only negative thing about this art you can't say. Amateur, overly simplistic, inconsistent, without construction, but if you think this is ugly I'd hate to see what you think is cute. It makes me think of Paper Mario kind of.
Gavin Scott
Thanks user, my art is something I wanna keep improving on. Here ya go; tapas.io/series/TLTM. I did want to avoid her being stereotypical, so her smiling is something you'll see, she just has a darker look on things, something that I wanna expand on as I continue this silly thing. Paper Mario you say? Well I am a fan of the games, thanks user..
Luke Gutierrez
>tfw want to post work but afraid of getting bullied
Jaxson Ortiz
user, ya gotta do it. Posting your work anywhere will give people the chance to ridicule it, but at the same time you might get someone to notice and like it. You gotta take that step forward.
Sebastian Bailey
Just do something embarrassing to get bullying-attraction over with, then post your art knowing no matter what you get, it was probably because of that earlier thing you did, not the art itself. plausible deniability kinda turned on its head. After all, it IS happening, no matter what. and you'll never be sure if it's something you should take to heart and improve on or not.
Christopher Cruz
I'm liking it. You definitely need to work on one thing though: stepping back and imagining how another person would see what you've drawn, and how they would interpret it. There's a lot that doesn't "read" like why the character needs help due to being bundled up, or what that thing is that scares the other into writing her will. Is it another character's big fat ass? How would we know that when everyone is made of geometric shapes and we haven't gotten fullbody views of anyone yet? Just work on your establishing and this will be funny comic strip gold someday. In the meantime I'll keep readin' it
Eli Phillips
Thanks dude, I'm gonna do my best to implement this with future pages, I'll admit I sometimes have trouble coming up with something for them to do, but it fun to get comments like this from time to time.
Lucas Jones
oh man, I remember liking this, but I completely forgot the link to your website.
Cooper Foster
how do you make people love your comic?
Ryder Ross
titties and anime
Robert White
Shove it to their faces over and over till they love it. In time man can get used to any sort of art and even start to appreciate it.
Frequent updates is the only thing you really need.
Josiah Ross
Every time I go to draw a comic I start to think I'll be like CWC and it stops me from drawing :(
Jaxson Reyes
post a page you're user so nobody will recognise you if you decide to improve
Lucas Williams
Good morning /hyw/!
Tyler Martinez
My eventual goal as a webcomic artist is to one day get my own page in the encyclopedia dramatica. You've gotta own your flaws
Alexander Hill
Owning your flaws is one thing, but if you end up with an Encyclopedia Dramatica page, they're probably more than just "flaws".
Luis Thomas
One of my biggest flaws is using hyperbole too much
Colton Rogers
I'd like an audience of people who won't get butthurt about the LGB characters and also about the lack of T characters.
So like, neither anti-sjws nor sjws.
Jeremiah Howard
Normal people?
John Harris
well, if your comic is full parade of gay (or halfgay) characters and there's nobody trans then it's going to get called out as any big gathering of LGBs tend to be specifically a LGBT space. IF there are some sporadic LGB characters that aren't connected by some gay network than lack of T characters shouldn't be an issue for anyone except tumblr
This, of course, is based on dubious belief you're going to have an audience.
Gabriel Torres
Actually working on my comic today woo woo
Nathan Carter
Yeah, I think that's what they're called.
It's the latter. Having seen what the trans crowd is capable of, I'm still concerned. I'm considering not advertising on tumblr for that reason, to be honest, even though there's a big potential audience there. Call it paranoia if you want.
Kevin Hill
Thanks, though the only website I have up so far is a dinky Smackjeeves. drbgoodlove.smackjeeves.com/ I'm planning to get the real site finished this week though.
Joshua Miller
I really like the way you shade your art. Just the right mix of fills and gradients.
Jason Garcia
First of all, worry about getting ANY audience. Second, tumblr is not going to eat you for not having T if you don't engage in political or gender activism. Third it's much more damaging to have badly written transgender character than having none (if you're cisgender yourself) Foruth, even if perfect storm happens you can still shoehorn some T as some background nobody (remember that bakery store clerk in chapter 5 page 27 panel 5? she's toootally trans) to appease the crowd.
Zeroth: Have a good comic.
Jacob King
Hey, if you want to be interviewed we can interview you.
Gavin Gutierrez
I just got lucky. I was making a joke with the alien mushroom god in Warren Ellis' Supergod (not to be confused with Grant Morrison's non-fiction book Supergods).
We're probably going to talk a lot about mushrooms in fiction on the podcast. Mantango, MTG Thallids, the DC microverse, etc.
Joshua Walker
anonymous bump~
Evan Miller
Man, slow day, huh? I put on my Sunday best and everything.
Aiden Richardson
I'm late a little bit but I just wanted to tell the user in last that I know what grades in plamo are and what they mean. It's not the lack of knowlage that make me casual in building gunplas. It's because was fucking terrible at it. Wanna hear some gore? Also K-ON sucks.
Brody Nguyen
THIS
Julian Garcia
Man I'd accept any fanbase. We got a small following like most webcomics. Fans that draw fanart would be nice, and also people who ask a LOT of questions would be wonderful. It'd make me feel like people are engaged.
Personally I don't care if it's SJWs or cancerous people or whatever. Any fanbase is good. I'm cheap.
Liam Foster
just let it die already
Evan Campbell
Life sucks, art is pointless, whatever
Adrian Flores
>K-ON sucks
I like you, whoever you are.
Coming podcast episode features me shaming Mitch over liking some moe show about a girl that can read minds. DEATH TO MOE.
Jordan Perry
I just like high grade because it's what they had when I was a teenager and anything higher than that is going to require tweezers oh lawd did you cut yourself with the hobby knife? This jumpsuit girl is a hella cutie
Luis Anderson
Whoa, lotta character in these. Looks like a mixture of different avantgarde videogame styles. What do they get up to?
Elijah Gomez
>whoever you are. Polish user here >oh lawd did you cut yourself with the hobby knife? I mean how much I fucked up when buiding models.
Nathan Gonzalez
>Coming podcast episode features me shaming Mitch over liking some moe show about a girl that can read minds. I hate Kotoura-San though. Shit was so bad I dropped anime entirely save for a handful of shows.
Angel Morales
I have a question. Is it possible to use some kind of visual novel app to create comics? I mean, if you can't draw. I can't draw :(
Christian Reed
Ohhh, MODEL gore. That might be even worse, they don't heal.
Jose Morales
So take it or leave it?
Cameron Moore
Why not just make a VN at that point
Logan Sanders
Huh? I'm just commiserating. Please don't say "app" Yeah a VN already is essentially a comic. Plenty of comics let you click through them. I especially like the ones where word bubbles appear as you go, so you can see the complete art first
Benjamin Jackson
How fucking arrogant can you be? People more talented than you work their fingers to the bone day and night without ever coming anywhere near the divine super nova of aesthetic genius that is Chris chan.
Samuel Gomez
The easiest way to avoid becoming CWC is having fantastic art. Doesn't matter if your shit is cringeworthy if it's mesmerisingly beautiful to look at. Seriously, shitty art is what invites people to ridicule webcomics, the writing only amplifies that.
Nathaniel Richardson
I thought it might be easier to make money in comics as a noob.
Brandon Collins
>I'll be like CWC What do you mean? You think you'd be terrible or you think you'll be hounded by thousands of trolls for years?
Kevin Bailey
So it's not a passion project, you're just some greedy fuckstick who thinks you can just wake up one morning and make free money.
Dylan Howard
It is passion. But I have to eat too
Colton Allen
Then get a job. You can do both if you're that passionate about it.
David Cook
Webomics pro-tip, you aren't going to make much money when you start out especially if you're a complete amateur. Even if you have legit skill, you still probably won't make much money. Go in thinking about it like a hobby.
Charles Powell
you can't have a job, a hobby, AND a social life. Most people can't even have the first and last ones
Hunter Watson
I have all three, so you're obviously talking shit. Go ahead and gamble it all on webcomics and see where that gets you. When you're busy applying for WIC checks then maybe you'll get your head out of your ass and act like an adult and own up to having to put in extra work for what you want.
Joseph Butler
LMFAO
Holy fuck I love when young naive creators come in with shit like this. You agelets have no idea how rough this road is. You look at the stars coasting on patreon and assume it's just a few strips away. Most of the people in this thread are going years without so much as a dollar, and most of the oldfags are close to a decade in and still not able to eat off it. And you think you can come in with a half assed "can't even be bothered to draw" comic? Let me reiterate
L M F A O
Ian Nelson
I'm 40. I don't need to make big money on the first issue it is mostly to have something to show some publisher. But if I have to pay someone to draw it will be expensive and then I need to find a way to make some of the money back.
Mason Brown
>But if I have to pay someone to draw it will be expensive Then learn to draw, buddy.
Carter Reed
>40 >still trying to do comics >too lazy to learn what happened to you
Isaiah Flores
Episode 1.
In which Mitch and Otto make several long, awkward pauses.
