Will there ever be a competitor to Youtube that caters mostly to animators? I really don't even know how popular pic related is anymore.

Ah, newgrounds, I knew him once.
It's been great many years. Those were the good days, more innocent, more carefree.

The question is if a competitor to YouTube will ever exist.

WOW this game looked a lot better in my memories.

All flash animation looks better through your mind's eye.

>over a decade later
>still haven't gotten good in this

Time to hang myself I guess.

>Orgasm Girl

The newgrounds flash game that was Dark Sould before Dark Souls/Demon Souls ever existed yes?

Newgrounds still exists as *the* viable platform for online animation, the big thing is that the names in online animation aren't teenagers with tons of free time to dump into cartoons anymore, and its difficult to turn a profit off of a cartoon when you need to dump so much time into making it.

The other side of that is that creating cartoons isn't the most straightforward and easy form of video entertainment online anymore. For a time, youtube was a place of 240p webcam videos, and Newgrounds was still flourishing. Today everyone has a phone they can make videos with, the concept of the Lets Play exists. Youtube video content is zero effort. Drawing and animating is, if nothing else, time consuming in comparison. Kids growing up now, who've essentially always had an iphone with a video camera, are less likely to discover the world of online animation. They're less likely to pirate Flash onto their family's computer in the living room- if their family even has one. It's the shift of the online landscape to accommodate phoneposters.

Newgrounds is still there, perfectly filling the niche it created 20 years ago.

Apparently Amazon is looking to compete with Youtube, which if goes through could create the largest company war since Disney/Warner Brothers and Coke/Pepsi.

What about vimeo?

I thought that was Facebook.

>The most famous newgrounds animation is a still image of the letter B

>Create a YouTube-eqsue platform for Animators?
That is completely possible and as long as you could figure out a half-decent way to monetize it, and you only cater SPECIFICALLY to animators then yes its possible. The name of the game is to keep storage costs/bandwidth costs as low as possible.

>Create a YouTube competitor?
Fuck no. YouTube doesn't make any money whatsoever and they've been bleeding for years now. The only reason why it is alive is because it is the worlds 2nd largest search engine, and Alphabet is highly vested in YouTube's dominance. If it were to get shitcanned in the next 5 years I would not surprised whatsoever. The only company that could create a YouTube platform and get away with it is Amazon (they could cover the storage costs).

People need to start showing niche websites more love. It would make the internet feel less claustrophobic and "cramped" in a sense. I don't like how I only go to 4 major websites now. Back in 2010, I had 20 websites that fufilled their own roles and made the experience of surfing the web feel a little more diverse.

Normalfags only care about making the next epic meme rather than making content for fun, so they'll stick to twitter and facebook rather than making their own blog or website which is actually very cheap to do

Them too, Google's response has been to piss off as many of their creators as possible

>Normalfags only care about making the next epic meme rather than making content for fun
This is the shit that has been killing my YouTube experience. I don't hate memes, I really don't. But I don't like YouTubers that pimpout a new meme in order to more views because it is a rising search term. Ugandan Knuckles was the first meme that I've seen people go from people loving it, to hating it in less than a week.

Memes are dead.
We've gone from memes that lasted for years here on Sup Forums, to these 1-week memes that are over before they even begin.

How could this be made in the modern days?
Would it work as a movie?
Would it have a shitstorm behind it?
Would it be considered "SJW garbage?

There She Is works because neither Cats nor Bunnys are good analogues to any group today. Neither seems to be second class citizens in their society, they ride trains together and shit and seem to be perfect equals. They get along swell, they just aren't generally allowed to do bedsheet judo with each other. It's forbidden love without any societal prejudice. Like Romeo and Juliet, except their families aren't feuding beyond not wanting their kids to bang, so more of a Pizza My Heart kind of scenario.

you just know some retard out there will see it some other way, and start a witch hunt for nothing

That game was rigged, man.

Romeo and Juliet mother fuckers. Did you read it.

they did a kickstarter and are working on the sixth(?) episode

Likely whatever Amazon makes. Really the only thing that you’d need for a Youtube competitor is a site that’s slightly less shitty than Youtube with better monetization options. The content creators top-to-bottom are ready for such a move, most aren’t even supported on YT anymore but on Patreon.

I don't go to YouTube for memes; I go there to relive memories (watching cartoons and commercials from my youth) and sometimes for reviews.

With two human boys and CGI.

Motherfucker I NAMED Romeo and Juliet as a comparison.

I don't get what would be so hard about making a system with demographics based advertising.
So you sign you channel up to be from PG to 18+ or whatever the ratings are, and advertisements are done in blocks within these categories.

>A decade
It's been at least 14 years son.

>search doesn't have a oldest to newest filter
Motherfucker! Even low tier boorus have that.

Computers were of a lower quality back then compared to now, user

It's been barely hanging in there. With the right tweaks, it can easily outclass youtube seeing how it has been doubling down on censorship.

A good monetization plan is something Newgrounds needs to consider.

Honestly, youtube is doing this to themselves wiht how they treat their money makers, basically profitting off of them but not giving them any money whatsoever, and allowing it to be controlled by anti-creator networks.

They also aren't doing themselves any favors but clamping down on political videos whose ideas they don't agree with but letting their favorite side outstrip them.

They're greedy hypocritical fucks who are trying to subtley push an agenda and it's gonna bite them in the ass. I wouldn't be surprised if amazon compeltely wipes them out with whatever they're planning.

Someone posted this video in the Newgrounds thread a couple of weeks ago, leading to a small discussion of Rina-chan.
youtube.com/watch?v=HoIaHI8F3sI

I was also playing Nier: Automata at the time and ended up discovering that 2B's VA is... Rina-Chan. I guess she really did make it. Wonder if the people who wrote her ED/Know Your Meme entries know.

Yeah, and Kirbopher is on Mobster Psycho 100 and OK KO: Let's Be Heroe's and has done episodes of Pokemon when he still lived in New York.

Considering how Amazon's anime service just bit the dust I doubt they can compete with YouTube.

YouTube, for about 5/6 years now, hasn't been a viable platform for animation.
>Will there ever be a competitor to Youtube that caters mostly to animator?
I don't think there will be a competitor to YouTube. YouTube is quite possibly the Geocities of our age. It dominates the culture of our internet, but when it ultimately dies, no equivalent to it will replace it.
Video streaming, I think, will 'dissolve' into the internet. I've seen Twitter act as a very viable video hosting platform. It simply treats video 'in consort' to a conversation. I believe the same case is with Facebook.

Amazon's Anime Strike service failed entirely because they gated it behind two paywalls. But it was a relatively small gamble for them in the grand scheme of things, and won't stop them from making their own video service.

Eh, I'm not sure about that. I think content will go from pre-recorded stuff that we're used to seeing, to live content. Hell, Twitch streams and events can prove that much.

What's "Alphabet?"

>I don't like how I only go to 4 major websites now.
You've just made me realize how the majority of sites I visit are for porn.

The most usage I give to Youtube is to listen to background music.

>Ugandan Knuckles was the first meme that I've seen people go from people loving it, to hating it in less than a week
They are breeding and drying faster than ever before. I wonder if that is the result of the low attention span and hyperactivity that some psychologist attribute to our contact with the Internet from a young age.

content creators wouldn't have to move. just upload to more than one site.

Google's parent company.

Thank you!

It's the Castle Calamity stuff.

>about making a system with demographics based advertising
That's called television.

The sequel was more visually impressive

Yes.

Wait do a lot of people not have desktop or laptop computers anymore?

So why did youtube change to only giving decent money to long videos?

Huh?

>I don't like how I only go to 4 major websites now. Back in 2010, I had 20 websites that fufilled their own roles and made the experience of surfing the web feel a little more diverse.

Yeah. Everything is more centralized now. So if something happened to just one of those sites it would be a lot more devastating than it would have been a decade ago. Imagine if Youtube just upped and 404ed tomorrow and never came back. Think of all that content that would be lost.

What's this? Looks vaguly familar.

>Pizza My Heart
What?
And I guess that makes sense.

Was this any good or did it just coast along on being gay?

Reeeeeeeeee

The average consumer sees a phone or tablet open up a browser and thinks "This is just the same as a computer" like it's different brand of milk or something, it's all the same to them.

You can shove more advertisements in long-format videos, and with let's play vids and review vids, a Youtuber can make several hours worth of content in less than a day. Meanwhil, it takes animators, creating a 5-10 minute long short, months to do it.

YouTube wants quantity, not quality.

They had an anime service?

Why buy your kid a computer they could learn to produce music, animate, draw, coding, video editing, etc. on, when they already got a phone to watch retards on youtube?

Children end up 'breaking' their pc's with virus's and lack of maintenance because their parents are also tech illiterate. (I know several people my age who let their heat sinks turn into a ball of dirt.)

>Geocities
What even was geocities? I came in just a little too late for that.

>it's all the same to them.

Given that modern browsers are all really nothing more than virtual operating systems, they're much closer to truth than you realise.

>two paywalls
Are they retarded?

Oh fuck I think I'm the same.

>Think of all that content that would be lost.
Wow. Maybe things should be more fragmented.

Today I will fucking remind you all of a great shame of the past from an era that you desperatly want to forget but alas, this song is enough to make the skeleton jump out of the closet.
youtube.com/watch?v=WWpZC1bKfX8

I just hope there will always exist an outlet for artists with a vision to share their work, even if they have to animation/write everything themselves. I know they can't make a living doing it like Twitch streamers, but Newgrounds didn't pay anyone either.

Free hosting. You couldn't just make a tumblr page, you needed somewhere to put all your shit.

My cousin, who is 12 at the time, has no trouble navigating with his tablet and looking up whatever he wants, but he can also manage fine with a computer. However, his brother, a 10 year old, needed help to create a space between words because he didn't know where the spacebar was despite the fact that he also knew how to work with a tablet.

How do you think the band must feel about their music being so iconic to a porn series.

I wonder how aria giovani feels about the lesson of passion games.

Fuck lesson of passion was good fun.

A web hosting platforming from the late 90s (and early 00s? I forget when it shut down). Lots of glorious shitty websites. There's an archive here: oocities.org/

There's also a decent tumblr that delves into it: oneterabyteofkilobyteage.tumblr.com/

It's hard to really explain without having experienced it at the time. Cursors with glitter trails, MIDI music, terrible backgrounds... Pure 90s web design.

I miss when you had to go to separate websites for contents, rather than these aggregate websites like reddit and tumblr and even Sup Forums. It was a different time.

I should clarify aria giovani is the porn star the lesson of passion games used for the main girl.

Fuck you.

I dunno. I, however, do know that I became a fan of Caro Emerald after that Bioshock Infinite fangame. I'm pretty sure her fanbase grew a lot that day.

>but Newgrounds didn't pay anyone either.
People were pess fussy about the animmation quality though so it wasn't such a time commitment.

Isn't flash getting discontinued?

But that's Edward you fuck.

Newgrounds paid me 100 usd for music.
I got 3rd place on pixel day music last year and won 30 bucks too.

Google out of 950k views in music has only amounted to about 85 google bucks.

Sprite animations looked better using actual sprites rather than Dorkly's drawingmonkey animating a bunch of unfunny expressions.

That's sad.

Personally Im trying to make an alternative too but 3 things, need money for another server for the encoding, CDN costs and the people and alot of the users that I have tried to reach to look this site if they even message me back they have said that "nah even with the way youtube is going I will stick to it" (If that persons browses here and remembers me, Hello there), love how many fucking bitch about Youtube and other alternative going 1984 on us but literally dont want to help make a change and want the actual platform to change to their will, I have stopped believing in this cunts for a long time already and the shit they supposed are preaching, even If money is their motive I told them my plan was mainly help with that, there still some networks out there that still pay relative ok taht are not that orwellian and Im planing to run my own thing, make shit more self sustainable, I did my part in kindly invite them, wont do it a second time though
legion.media

Memes died the instant companies realized they were marketable. Now people seek to create memes instead of them just happening. Social media just helps to run these forced market-researched glorified ads into the ground faster than ever.

...

What can be a good place to make your blog or website? I have a bunch of shitty content and want to dump it in one place.

> Ugandan Knuckles was the first meme that I've seen people go from people loving it, to hating it in less than a wee.
I used to feel this like you, but then I remember an arrow to the knee.

newgrounds offered cash prizes with the daily and weekly trophies once upon a time, and i know Tom used to pay artists to produce content exclusive for NG, featuring the NG logo.

They also introduced an ad revenue system either shortly before or just around the time of the 2012 redesign. I'm currently sitting on a keen $10.25 USD.

my bad, it was the top 5 movies and games of the month won $250 a pop, not the weeklies or the dailies.

Old user from back ~2006,not only money but Tom also gave away many times Tablets to upcoming content creators back in the day, also many of the big animators of today were directly funded by Tom I remember Kirbopher said in a video or a podcast I think that Tom funded him to keep making some cartoons, I also remember back in the day when I told Tom in the forums that was pondering in a new system for the audio portal and its submitions to be used in other projects outside of the website about why not introduce the at the time relative new idea that is going on the webz, this license called "Creative commons"

*Digital Graphic tablets

>lets not forget the "upload limit" and how a geocities website turned down for after too many people visited telling you it would be up again after a given amount of time, only to see the same message again.

oh yeah, I remember the wacom tablet give aways. I was a bright eyed 13 year old with dreams of grandeur back in 07, and if only I could get myself a tablet! Then my cartoons would get front paged*!

It was the first thing I bought with my first paycheque in high school. Last year I won daily 2nd and weekly 3rd. Follow your dreams.

*read: past judgement

Newgrounds shot itself in the foot with the Web 2.0 meme. Tom tried to make NG into a respectable social platform for professional artists, but it turned out that Patreon/Steam/Youtube are better platforms for making dosh and advertising, while the average person making shitty sprite movies and animations of the letter 'B' was alienated by the changes.

If NG held on to its status as another shithole of the internet like Sup Forums or ED, kept the turd of the week etc, it would, ironically, be more relevant today by virtue of still having its own unique culture, and memehead kids would probably still be attracted to Flash as a means of shitposting if nothing else.

I remember those days too when Im really wanted to shared my artistic autism with the world and got this fucker after saved some money since Wacoms were still quite premium stuff back in the day, parents hated the idea I considered something creative and wanted (read forced) to go the Science related route, either a General practitioner Doctor or at least bother try an engineer, I still have the tablet laying around my room

Had so much fun in NewGrounds. But im from a different era

- Geocities
- Lycos
- Altavista
- Rocketmail (still have the account from those days and use it)
-Netscape Navigator 3
-Irc golden days (mIRC)
-AskJeeves

Way less shit on the web, no normies, few kids.

I honestly dont know what happen to Newgrounds when I started university, after all I also left this shithole for a while and when I came back I just saw way too much changes in both sites (read: its core/initial culture dead to an extend) so I just kept messing around for a while while many kids trying to pose as oldfags and such trying to school me on stuff, if you are not old to remember at least this site was literally run on a fucking basement on a usb on fucking Macs mini dont pose as an oldfag...

Say what you will, but any joe schmo can submit absolute trash to the portal right now and be guaranteed a couple hundred views. Make a new account on youtube, upload a video, and see how long it lingers at the sub-100 view level. I'll never forget the 'Winds of Change' news post, and how venomously i reacted to it. With retrospect, I don't think it was wrong to try and make NG a viable platform for professional artists, but I think the biggest hurdle was how absolutely broken the submission system was when the 2012 redesign happened. To this day, I think the 2007 site layout was superior in user friendliness.

>Netscape Navigator
You just sent me back to the Computer Ops class back in elementary school. Goddamn.

Imagine how Pendulum feels.
