The article goes over problems in the industry from the perspective of some folks who work in it. Some takes they had about their experience in the industry:
>“primarily guys who would get known for being great storytellers” women do color and design >"aggressively masculine behavior" >Pixar has a “drinking culture”and a “culture of bros"
Were these real problems or is it being overblown? Are there any real issues with gender inequality in animation? Have there been any improvements in animation since 2015.
female artist have zero to no interest in animation.
go to any art school and you will see like maybe one or two chicks in animation out of a class of like 30
things like photography is more interesting to girls
Luke Rodriguez
There is literally nothing wrong with masculinity.
Jack Howard
What is wrong with a culture of bros? That shit keeps your people loyal and friendly.
Noah Bell
I didn't read OP so I'm not sure what this thread is about but I wanted to chime in and say women's lib was a drastic misstep for humanity and will lead to the downfall of civilization
Dominic Morales
There is no such thing as gender equality. The truth is that a lot of women are getting into the healthcare industry so they can commute and work close to home. There's plenty of hospitals, the hours and benefits are good, and the safe work environment appeals to them. The animation industry isn't really going to get more women in position unless they overhaul the work hours, and the work culture to suit women's needs. Plus more animation studios need to pop up so the commute is short, instead of a hour or 2 long slog thru a congested city.
Brody Reed
These. Have any of you been in a class that was female dominated? "Feminine" behavior is fucking ridiculous. Classtime got shifted an hour because the instructor was late, so we were sitting there for an hour with nothing to do. Landwhale and other girls next to me start chatting, spend about 15 minutes criticizing my physique, and 45 minute doing nothing but talking about how they like pumpkin spice lattes until I felt my brain oozing out my ears.
Dylan Perry
>pumpkin spice lattes
I never understood what the fuck was up with this shit. It's not really THAT good.
Mason Torres
Can we send all the feminists to Africa or the middle east where they are actually needed? They are grasping for anything here in the west
Oliver Gutierrez
>Were these real problems or is it being overblown?
How would i know, i'm not an insider in the animation industry. Most if not all people here aren't.
James Brooks
i'm sure some people have dealt with the industry. plenty of people here on Sup Forums are a part of the industry, in some way.
Gavin Cruz
Porn games do not count.
Charles Johnson
Why does every industry have to be 50/50? There are male-dominated industries. There are female dominated industries. And that's ok, because men and women don't make the same career choices.
Eli Hernandez
What does that have to do with anything?
They're not demanding more women. They're complaining about the shit treatment to those that get in.
Tyler Walker
That's some nazi talk right there.
James Long
>shit treatment >it's just men behaving like men
Justin Bell
>men behaving like men
Rapists and sexual offenders are not normal, user.
Liam Price
Men are the ones who invented animation and still continue to pioneer it. Most women in the industry are lazy fans of tv who want to insert their characters and gay shipping into shows. They can fuck off.
Cameron Robinson
Has there ever been real evidence that sexism is preventing any woman from getting any job here in America?
Juan Jenkins
you know, I want to gender equality in oil rigs, submarine welding, frame carpentry and lumberjacking. For some reason gender equality only applies in office jobs.
Really makes you think.
Nathan White
>woman creates an office where woman can only apply >office shuts down because everyone was being a bitch to each other instead of working
Joshua Carter
God damn why doesn't Sup Forums have to deal with Diversity shit threads every day, it's not fair.
Carson Parker
Your idea of a what a man is kind of shit.
Actually open the fucking link.
Easton Watson
Because Japan in general doesn't give a shit about it, so Sup Forums material remains pure.
Adam Taylor
Man Ralph was kind of an asshole.
Carter Cooper
It doesn't really make me think much. Most feminists live in urban settings and those jobs listed aren't as advertised or available in urban neighborhoods.
However, sure let's get some gender diversity there. If women feel capable and welcome in those areas, they will apply.
Aaron Peterson
>They're complaining about the shit treatment to those that get in. They always say that before they start demanding for quotas.
Jace Ortiz
Doesn't have to be 50/50 desu. All it really has to do is be an environment that is conducive for different genders to reach their maximum potential without stigma. For instance, if there's like 1 female engineer in a pool of 50 (because she's the only woman who tried to be an engineer), then all that's really desired here is that she's treated with equal amounts of respect and has equal opportunity to succeed.
Josiah Gomez
>inequality now means women are angry men aren't women welp this is going well, totally normal, healthy adults are talking there.
Ryan Clark
Fuck feeling welcome, do you think every man in the world would feel welcome at an oil rig? Would some pasty faced manlet with noodles for arms feel welcome at any of those jobs?
Feeling welcome if just a weaselly way to say the feelings of one person outside of the group mean more than the feelings of everyone that's already in the group.
Daniel Morgan
nice try, woman.
Jonathan Martin
Do you have a link to that article?
Cameron Roberts
Japan has plenty of female animators, creatives, workers, etc and does it right and it has an even bigger masculine culture and drinking culture.
The problem is you, not the culture or the business. Adapt, form a new studio or leave.
Xavier Sullivan
Thing is, and no doubt am I going to come off as sexist or whatever, men and women have fundamentally different conceptions of what 'respect' means, and by extension what it means to be 'offensive'. It's like dogs and cats, or a metric-user and an imperial-user. They are always going to clash and act as if their group's worldview is universal. It's inevitable.
Carson Watson
yeah, those jobs in oil rigs are fucking insane, most of the time you work one month and rest for one or two weeks.
The pays is good but it's fucking tiring. Also the probability to die from some unexpected (and sometimes hilarious) work accident is high.
Jeremiah Jackson
in my country I saw one woman being a mason worker. ONE. She was lesbian though.
Jason Harris
can men and boys not have anything anymore?
Brandon Lee
>Also the probability to die from some unexpected (and sometimes hilarious) work accident is high. At least you'll always live on as a webm posted on Sup Forums.
Chase Brooks
At the animation workshop like 60% of their animation students are women, and that's a much more technically driven school than most in America. Gobelins is mostly female too iiirc
might just be the california inbreeding
Evan Wood
Masculinity is evil, user. It's something to be cured and written off history books, not just controlled.
Lincoln Thomas
How do you take an article discussing a real problem and proceed to dive into one not being discussed?
Did you open the article?
Mason Carter
There is definitely more interest in becoming animators coming from women than from men. A quick look at tumblr and deviantart will show you that.
Male artists, meanwhile, seem to prefer becoming freelance graphic designers and concept artists while doing commissions on the side.
Gabriel Foster
>Meanwhile in the shit that actually requires masculine traits
Jose Cruz
pastebin or alternatives. fuck your links
Logan Bailey
This.
Men are enginered to be sexual deviants and war mongers. Nothing more, nothing less.
John King
>Why can't men have an entire industry to themselves?
I'm not necessarily agreeing with the article, user, but it's pretty fucking ridiculous to want that.
Juan Rogers
Tranny prostitution?
Lincoln Rivera
So why didn't you lead with that question instead of saying shit anyone who read the article would be able to mock you for?
Justin Gray
There's really only two problems as I see it on this particular topic:
1) While you're on the job, act like a fucking professional. You're there to work, it's not a dating service or a place to test out your pickup lines.
2) You don't get more women into certain lines of work by whining at industries and insisting they hire more women (even if they're unqualified), you get more women into certain lines of work by making them fully aware of the breadth of their available career options at a very young age and let them make their own choices when they grow up. If even at that point there is still a gender disparity, then that is not a problem of the patriarchy, it's just a reflection of natural differences between the sexes.
Robert Phillips
>folks When did this word become a signal for muh oppression?
In my country women are the majority in any kind of artistic schools in all classes but graduates tend to get balanced out especially in animation. Because the few men that do go to art schools tend to be very autistic and often stay in school late at night to do their own projects. Theres women like that too, but majority of the class sits on facebook all day, draws tumblr yaoi fanart on their sketchbook and flunks out or switches to Graphic Design once they realize just how much work animation requires.
Because animation is so work-intensive its the most "sweatshop" of all forms of art and media, its not as cool and romantic as being a painter in some elite circle where you just fart paint on the canvas and give it a pretentious name, animation is more of you and all your coworkers having their noses stuck in front of a screen or a paper 8-16 hours a day. And once new art students come to realize this when it takes them a week to get their yaoi boys or fursonas to wave towards the camera, most people quit.
Alexander Flores
>I want No you don't. You just want a "gotcha"
Wyatt Gomez
There were some women working in the meat refinery I used to work in. The eye-opening thing is in "lower jobs" like that, equality already exists and everyone gets paid equally for the same work. This whole "unequality" shit only seems to be a problem at higher end comfy office jobs that barely qualify as jobs. One peculiar thing was how I noticed many of the female colleagues got shaped by the nature of the work itself. All of them were kinda shy and quiet at first but after a year or two chopping livestock to pieces most of them cursed like sailors, played cards and talked about their cars just like all us men did.
I bet all of those office work "misogyny" and "harassment" problems would instantly go away if we would force those workers to do say, road- and pavement work for 3 years. They dont have the time to be offended or to pinch at each others buttcheeks when the hard labor takes all the attention and time away.
Dominic Ramirez
So you're saying it's impossible to get along? That's coward talk.
Hard labour is for robots and people who deserve to be treated as robots.
Ayden Anderson
Yet every person should do it at some point in their lives, or they lack the perspective and working ethic.
Bentley Torres
Calm down wonderbread guy
Jack Powell
I'm just going to point out the confirmation bias there. More women use tumblr and deviantart. Therefor you will find more women interested in animation on there. That's not an actual metric to use when gauging 'interest' in general.
Lucas Walker
neither do webcomics, incidentally.
Adam Barnes
No, but there has been proof of Google specifically putting white and Asian men at a disadvantage when hiring.
Easton Wright
That's because they want to make something of their own and most probably started making projects way before art schools.
Austin Bell
I dunno if I'd wanna work at Sausage Fest Inc.
Charles Garcia
Who cares.
Angel Kelly
From the animators that I've seen in fact on twitter, there are women animators but it's like ehhhh they are all so shitty when it comes to picking business avenues. They think that they can just fucking work on the side, and that's not true.. it's just a fucking clusterfuck of women thinking that they have to prove themselves to us. And guys thinking they have to be an alpha bitch.
Adrian Mitchell
Who do you think represents this best from the people you follow on Twitter?
Isaac Bennett
Overblown.
I'd become an alcoholic too considering quality of detail in Pixar cartoons. Sometimes when you are stressed out you do things you don't really give a fuck about and they aren't exactly nice, but some people like to look at those things and take high horse and make them about themselves. >buncha men are drinking >didn't "invite" any women because they didn't invite anyone at all, it just happened naturally >wtf, why wasn't I invited, I can't be an outcast >hmmm, they don't have any women now that I think about it, nevermind that men and women hang out in different ways >THEY MUST HATE ALL WOMEN 10/10 logic.
Justin Cooper
Wew that hypocrisy
Jordan Williams
I thought it was another issue of >Women just did not care or attempt to go into that industry in any large number until very recently. It was not because there was some evil patriarchy involved keeping all the bitches out, just not that many women bothered to go into the field in the first place.
Noah Hughes
Not anymore, my animation class was slight majority girls at all times. Like 60-65% women. It seems in recent years lots of girls want to go into animation.
One of my professors talked about how that is a recent thing. When he was in school there was maybe one or two girls in each class in the early 90's.
Chase Ross
>HEHEHEHEHE I wanna work with women to SCORE HEHEHEHEHE
You're the exact kind of man that article is talking about.
David Davis
>They're complaining about the shit treatment to those that get in. >Pixar has a “drinking culture”and a “culture of bros"
Seems to me they aren't.
William Ross
Unit two in culver cityfag here.
Article is garbage. The shit about the historical issues are probably true, but not relevant. The key today. Animation tools are exponentially easier, but animation still requires autismo powers. Those are heavily male.
The claim that Pixar of all places is a chadsville is stupidly hilarious. It's an offshoot of tech, yes, but it's farther left, and even more full of soy latte than Google.
Submitted for evidence: There are ZERO institutional barriers for animators on youtube. If anything, woman have an advantage at patreon fundraising. What is the gender balance there? Even more imbalnced than in the industry.
Kevin Jones
When considering if something is biological or cultural you should compare America against other societies, in this case in Japan. There's loads of women working in animation there, in everything from in-betweening to series direction.
Luke Reed
>complaining that there's a "culture" of dumb shit guys like doing at a workplace that's mostly male big surprise there would also be a culture of dumb shit women like to do if the workplace were mostly women. would that also be a "problem" that needs correcting?
Gavin Harris
ANIMATORS are more male. But from my last couple years of jobs in animation here in Burbank it's pretty heavily outweighed by females in 1. Character design, 2. environment design, and 3. young storyboarders.
I do notice more men in retake animation, editorial, and production support roles. I barely see women on prod teams...(desu all the ones I've known on prod teams fuck up and get fired or stay career PA's)
Just shitting out some stuff I notice. Another gender split thing is both men and women become episode directors or showrunners but those going up to production, line producer, or studio side of things seem to be all dudes. I've met like two female line producers ever.
Studios are going toward like liberal/progressive everything is a lovely wonderland of friendship route with most shows so guess it explains some art departments seeming to only recruit women now. (Exaggeration, but heavily favor younger women over younger men.)
Michael Hill
Meh, Both suck. I've been around an all-neck beard conservative schlub animation team and an all women story department and both were just fucking insufferable. Theres too much gender circlejerking by nerds.
Cameron Johnson
You can see that far left, far right and mid in white upper row, as well far right on the couch wants his chad dick.
Owen Turner
>why do I have to WORK at the work place, I want to be with my friends and party and joke and get paid! fuck sexism.
James Green
>or a metric-user and an imperial-user. We all know metric is the better system.
Joseph Cruz
Fucking this. As much as the word "manchild" is thrown around, nobody talks about the large percentage of women who carry that high school mentality far into adulthood and the workplace.
But by all means be an ignorant jackass. Anti-sjws wallow in denial like dogs wallow in excrement.
Die
Jonathan Mitchell
Those articles were proven false. Try again sweetie. Insha Allah you return to the kitchen soon.
Nolan Diaz
>Implying FGM,arranged marriages and honour killings arent becoming a thing in the west.
Aiden Nelson
>Have there been any improvements in animation since 2015 So, from the looks of the replies so far in this thread, the situation hasn't become worse. >b-but muh Steven Universe Well, if that's the only show you watch and constantly complain about, then so be it.
Animation wise, I'm quite content with the output of most shows. I just wish the episodes were released in reliable schedules. That's all.
Christian Green
>Spreading fake news.
Brody Kelly
How thirsty do they get around their single big guy co-worker?
Jose King
They could make a mix of Chinese workers getting mutilated or killed by the machines they operated.
Jaxon Brown
I agree, in communist Russia EVERYONE could work in factories, farms or as simple labor. Modern leftist don't realize that the type of equality communism wants is not the mental wanking they think. Also Jordan Peterson (muh internet dad) says that each work ask for a specific type of traits to be successful in that job and climb higher in their social order, if women want to be successful lumberjacks, at one point they will have to take some traits of the male lumberjacks, that's what the job ask for.
t. college faggot working for minimal wage
Nathaniel Taylor
>The one guy is a nu-male
So, no men at all.
If you need to hit some checkboxes for color and gender to make yourself feel inclusive, then you're looking at people based on their skin and sex, not their talent.
Adrian Turner
But communist Russia totally failed in everything, except shooting people into space first. That's why it's superseded by capitalist autocratic Russia today, which still sucks, but now has magical uberhaxx0rs who can hack in all American computers and websites. At least, according to the Americans and their media, be they leftist or right, whatever that means in American jargon.
Chase Cook
>except shooting people into space first. You mean, shooting a poor doggo into space and let it die up there alone.
No wonder modern leftists like Islam so much.
David Howard
>communism doesn't work that's the point, modern leftist don't know (or care) about the consequences turning they already stable, capitalist countries into modern "utopias".
This gender equality is just one more step for their means. But I don't care anymore, I am too old for this shit.
Isaiah Hill
That too. First satellite, first doggy, then first man. Then somehow, the Ameriburgers managed to coordinate and talk together, and suddenly, they had first people on the moon. Old people always think that a leftist is automatically a commie or wants to turn everything into communism. It's just as bad as having everything right be decried as being nazi. That dumb old left vs right thinking that old people have will hopefully die out. If necessary, it must die out with the old generations who still perpetuate it and want to cling to it.
Michael Miller
user, the people fostering us vs them mentality the most right now are young millennials. And it will never die out anyway; tribalism is a core element of humanity. Might as well ask humans to stop being primates.
Ian Baker
Forced cyborgification upgrades to all of mankind when? Once we're not apes anymore, but beautiful sexy robo cubes, we'll we free from the old thinking. Unless those other robo cubes have a different color, of course.
