I actually watched that film this morning (Rashomon is next) and yeah, there's definitely some elements in common. There's another story that follows the situation of Yojimbo closer with the two gamblers, but Usagi teams up with Gen instead of handling it alone.

Something I noticed was the lead was played by a man named Mifune, like Usagi's lord. I wonder if that was intentional

The two big influences on Sakai's fascination with Japanese culture were samurai films and movies and folklore about youkai. I doubt his name is a coincidence.
