What does Sup Forums think of the death tax? On one hand people should be free to do what they want with their money, provided that what they want to do is legal, but on the other hand having a hereditary elite isn't good for society. What should we do?

There's no logic to taxing the dead. It's not like the state is paying for your funeral. Inheritance helps break the cycle of debt.

I'm a Tory and I'm for a high death tax. I'm for taxing wealth over earnings in general, in order to promote meritocracy.

Similarly with council tax, I'd replace with a land value tax - something like the Danegeld.

There's nothing more cringey than unearned wealth and that's what inherited wealth is. You should be able to leave something - your home and a small stipend perhaps - but tax the shit out of the rest. Use the revenue to reduce/abolish taxes at the lower end.
Everything should be designed to incentivise the individual to serve a productive role in society.

Also, death tax kills small businesses because most small farms or small business have to be liquidated just to raise the cash to pay the tax. This has let to corporate farming and reduction of competition of many industries in America.

Even if I agree, why does the taxman deserve it? If my dead relative wanted to leave his money to the state, he could have do so in his will.

The first step of wealth creation in a capitalist society (for an individual, for a family, or for a nation) is savings.

When you under-consume resources, and build up savings, you form the capital necessary to make investments that increase productivity and therefore increase all of our standards of living.

If you want to destroy capital accumulation every time someone dies, you are putting a very artificial limit on capital creation, limiting to the arbitrary length of a human life.

There are many businesses that have flourished over many generations, improving their customers and employees lives all the way.

You would simply be limiting the possibilities and stunting the growth of society if you do not let people accumulate capital and simply give that capital to the person of their choice (possibly the person with the best training, etc.. most likely a son our daughter).

I worked for a family owned company called Dewey Pest Control (I won my own pest business now). Dewey is a 3rd generation family company. They made a huge push in the 80's from the son of the founder. The company would not exist today as we know it if there was a punitive death tax at that time.

YES. All unearned wealth should be taxed (and generally is). Inheritance is taxed now. Welfare is taxed in the UK. Yes, tax is deducted from your benefit payments.

No one is going to abolish inheritance tax. The only question is what's the appropriate amount to tax it at. I'd allow a tax free amount and then tax the rest at at least 60%.
