Moon e Antarctica best album

i like modest mouse a lot ok

Keep it to yourself my man. Nobody here ever bothers to have a good MM discussion.

Isaac is a massively underrated guitarist desu

lets try and make one

do you guys think their next album will be their last? i think cd copies of strangers said something like "the golden casket volume 1" so ti would only make sense for that to mean these next two albums are their casket, or their last

part of me has had enough... they're on a downward slope

youtube.com/watch?v=_JAzZYxHvEg

link unrelated btw just a classic

honestly, as someone who considers modest mouse their absolute favorite band, i think it'd be fitting to see them hang it up. i've heard on this tour isaac has seemed not too interested, and i wouldn't blame him, he's been doing this for a long ass time.

What do you think is the best guitar work you've heard from him in a song?

listen to this then get out son

youtube.com/watch?v=755VHYTEROc&index=13&list=PLNKnNwQ3xNGPgRakdGyqEQMOa1wjpJydM

Nah, probably not as Isaac has been very open that Modest Mouse is basically his job now. I think he just likes the imagery of "The Golden Casket"
Not like they can't make good music anymore either. See: youtube.com/watch?v=tUXhBw7nL2o, was made and released in 2015 for the Ugly Casanova reissue. I hope the next album is something like it, Jeremiah said it'll be "weirder"

I saw them open for The Flaming Lips and they were fucking awful

This. He mostly gets praise for vocals, songwriting and lyrics, but he's also an amazing guitarist

Edit The Sad Parts. That guitar after one minute and around the 3:30 mark is absolutely breathtaking

>likes the flaming lips
>calls modest mouse awful

Lounge (Closing Time)
Maybe not technically the best, but I'm a sucker for rhythmic guitars

If they put out an entire album at this quality then I'd maybe be sold, but Strangers isn't there, and either way Isaac's voice is missing a lot of the soul he once had.

very interesting choice. I can't pick a favorite but the guitar in Styrofoam Boats/Nice on Ice is the perfect way to end Lonesome Crowded West

youtube.com/watch?v=li30NxCsJ7w

That's one of the best from that album. I love me some Shit in Your Cut, Sugar Boats, and The Best Room too. Might be my favorite album of the post-Moon and Antarctica era desu.

I remember when I was a teenager I listened to Modest Mouse a lot and my stepdad would always make fun of Isaac's lisp, it really pissed me off for some reason
desu I like his lisp

Terrible taste

Ok user. I really think they should've called it quits after Good News etc. Or they could've kept on making more dance like music like The View. Their last two albums were totally underwhelming.
He's ok, the best work he did was when he was only using octave chords for most of their early songs. Sad Sappy Sucker is way underrated to be honest members of my family tree. Second best to This is a long etc.

Is it bad I have not heard a single Modest Mouse album?

No, I'd prefer you keep it that way desu

Yeah, that needs to change tripfag
youtube.com/watch?v=vzz35a6BREs

just dont reply to him please

youtube.com/watch?v=igQhmh5H6WE remember when Isaac was an absolute madman?

I dunno man it depends what you wanna do if you wanna sit round quietly, a lil melancholy, that old stuff is good: the gentle feel of the earlier albums is irreplaceable for sure, but if you wanna busy your head or move around a bit or just go 'fuck yeah!' this new album is fine. I wont go on too much but the mysticism and imagery in Isaacs writing is far more pronounced than it has been - some of it is kind of mind blowing.

Teeth Like God's Shoeshine is one of my faves. That's such a weird fucking riff at the beginning, and the harmonics at the end give me goosebumps. Doin' the Cockroach has such great chicken-scratching in the middle of the song that's fun as hell to play too.

Its not going to happen

OK, where should I start

It took me a while to think about it, it's either Lounge or Teeth Like God's Shoeshine

youtube.com/watch?v=x3Jt4F4qQ5A
Dude was on meth
youtube.com/watch?v=Nirolc_X_nY
He still kind of is a madman

The Moon and Antarctica

If you want something rawer, everything before it

If you want something poppier, everything after it

montie as much as i dislike you my advice for modest mouse is this

start from the beginning: most fans agree their good shit is here, the later stuff is up for debate with people (i personally like it all)

or

go to popular: listen to good news and the albums forward and then listen to whatever after

any one of their first 3 albums desu
If you want maximum feels, This Is a Long Drive
If you want something slightly post-hardcoreish, The Lonesome Crowded West
If you want straight up indie rock, The Moon and Antarctica

Why? They put on a great show, even if you don't like the music. ever seen them?

My girlfriend and I saw them after Brand New in Maryland, they put on a really good show. I'd like to get more into them.
Most songs they played were from We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank I think, which I think is polarizing here. Should I listen to The Lonesome Crowded West?

LCW is their best imo

>Should I listen to The Lonesome Crowded West?
Yes but start with Trailer Trash and Heart Cooks Brain

It's their best album really

Built to Spill and Modest Mouse should collab
it would be GOAT

What are your favorite lyrics, guys? No matter how much their style changes, I don't think Isaac will ever stop writing quality lyrics.
>There's one thing to know about this town
>It's 5 hundred miles underground and that's OK
>There's one thing to know about this Earth
>We're put here just to make more dirt and that's OK
>There's one thing to know about this globe
>It's bound and it's willing to explode and that's OK

>start with Trailer Trash and Heart Cooks Brain

>Implying TLGS isn't a damned good start
>Implying HCB is even a good song and not just a good poem with shitty music

>everything that keeps me together is falling apart
>i got this thing i consider my only art
>of fucking people over

i really got into the moon and antarctica during a weird time of my life and those words hit me too hard

Truly two of the best bands ever

>I'm going nowhere but I'm guaranteed to be late
>Short love with a long divorce
>I know that I miss you and I'm sorry if I dissed you
>All the people you knew were the actors
>The moths beat themselves to death against the lights, adding their breeze to the summer nights

Trailer Trash and HCB are by far the most accessible songs, which doesn't apply to TLGS, especially if you've never really heard an early Modest Mouse song

We Were Dead is actually pretty good, if you liked those songs there's no reason not to listen to it. I think it's main problem is just really uninspired filler tracks, the core is great.

There's a video on youtube of them jamming at a live show in, like, 1999. I think at some point there were plans to do an album where they covered each others songs.

>our hearts don't change
>from pups to dust
>couldn't see clearly but i had a sense of what right and wrong was
>honest to god
>i was honest as hell
>i don't lie very often but i lie very well

>And I claim I'm not excited with my life any more
>So I blame this town, this job, these friends
>The truth is it's myself
I got into Modest Mouse when I was going through some kind of depressive mental breakdown that I won't explain because no one wants to hear that shit

I want to, user

It's not like Montie only listens to pop music. Teeth honestly isn't that un-accessible, only the first minute or so is.

I did as well desu. Modest Mouse was truly the first band I got into that accurately described my depression in their lyrics. I lost count of how many times I listened to Long Drive while lying in bed not wanting to do anything.

>Well that is that and this is this.
>Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
>when the ocean met the sky.
>You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
>When the earth folded in on itself.
>And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath."
>You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?
>You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

It's cool pouring the bible into a ADHD thought factory

I just think it's not the most accessible song if you listen to (early) Modest Mouse for the first time ever

Oh shit I thought you were replying to Montie, sorry dude

>or they could've kept on making more dance like music like The View
Is that not exactly what they did on WWD?

Yeah it's a good point. Maybe I'm just the type that likes to dive into weird music headfirst, instead of starting out with accessible stuff.

No problem m8

each to his own I guess

Does 'Good News' get a bad rep generally?

Literally Satin in a Coffin and Bukowski

those intros god damn

Yeah WWD is the danciest album they've ever made, and the Ground Walks from STO was pretty dancey too. They haven't completely shed that element from their music.

One Chance is one of the most underrated Modest Mouse songs

I've been listening to LCW for 2 years now, it's become one of my favorite albums ever and I'm really not a fan of rock either. The thing is I've never bothered even checking out their other projects because of how much I listen to LCW. What album should I listen to from them now?

It's a good album, but it's probably my least favorite from them. It's the poppiest thing they've made but there's still some great songs on there like Bukowski, The World At Large, Blame it on the Tetons, etc.

This Is A Long Drive, Building Nothing Out of Something, The Moon and Antarctica, also don't forget to check out their great EPs

hell yea

Long Drive definitely if you want a less-angry version of the LCW style. Building Nothing out of Something is similar as well. Everything after builiding nothing is pretty different from the LCW style.

>I'v seen so many ships sail in
>Just to head back out again, and go off sinking

What's their most underrated song? And why is it Guilty Cocker Spaniels?
youtube.com/watch?v=igXIB2ArH8c

isaac is a buddy of a mine. he's basically a mix of david byrne and the white indie james brown. such an amazingly, charming fellow. so much heart. love you brother. keep it up.

the lonesome crowded west, building something out of nothing and moon y antartica are top albums. the way he hypes a crowd and leads his band (when he's in the mood) are so spectacular. he really did it.

And Whale Song. Waiting...waiting for that kick in ...oh..oh...ye...der ya go..aaaah

>be 16 year old me
>already have severe depression
>be occasionally verbally abused by stepdad, but when it does happen it's usually severe and makes me feel like shit, even though if it's usually after I do something stupid
>be with gf for a year that my parents hate to the point they literally ban me from talking to her, take away my cell phone permanently, and if they catch me they'll sell my consoles, guitar, etc.
>Still talk to her since I've been into her since 8th grade and just can't seem to get over her
>They catch me emailing her
>close out internet browser before they can see the conversations since there's nudes, etc.
>they demand me give them the password
>just sit there silent for 2 hours
>I try to get out of the house
>Mom blocks me
>lose control of myself and shove my Mom and punch my stepdad in the face 3 times (this is completely unlike me and I feel terrible about this)
>get sent to a mental hospital for 7 days for this
>come back home, no privileges, go back to school and talk to her there
>Christmas Break comes
>gf lends me her old cell phone so we can talk over there
>literally get caught the day before Christmas
>Lock myself in the bathroom
>tie a bag tightly around my head
>only take it off and open the door because the threatened to use a crowbar to open
>get sent to mental hospital again and after I'm done with that one the send me to a longterm one (3 months) since I was on Suicide Prevention for the majority of my stay at the one before that
>Elliott Smith, Brand New, Slint, Modest Mouse, and American Football were basically all I listened to in that period.
>after I got home I had to spend the rest of high school online and banned from contact with ANY of my friend
I'm 19 now and still with gf and out of my parents house, so things are okay I guess

Custom Concern

Also: As I said , Novocain Stain, Grey Ice Water, Truckers Atlas, Head South

>isaac is a buddy of a mine
Cool. Let him know they sounded like shit on the Unlimited Sunshine Tour.

*friends

I dunno would go with but I do know Dramamine is one of the most fairly rated songs of all time.

wow your parents are absolute shitbags, glad that you managed to move out and not live at home anymore. Hope you can enjoy your life now

>Standing in the tall grass
>Thinking nothing
>You know we need oxygen to breath
>Everytime you think you're walking you're just moving the ground
>Everytime you think you're talking you're just moving your mouth
>Everytime you're looking you're just looking down
Man I just love cowboy Dan so much, and I always found that part amazing

>tfw you shave ya mom

Shit man, sounds like your stepdad deserved it. You shouldn't feel bad

I don't like Novocain Stain (though the ending is excellent), but Grey Ice Water and Truckers Atlas are both at least top 10 easily. Head South is nice as well. I think Interstate 8 is underrated as fuck.

I love that small peaceful part, showing that cowboy dan still has some humanity left in him. The only thing that can calm him down from the city moving into his land is standing among nature and being zen with the world. But then he realizes no matter how much he clings to it, he can never stop the influx of industrialization. That's how I see it anyways.

Mom was cool, she just did what my stepdad wanted because if she didn't he'd get all pissy and have like a 3 hour conversation about it
I was pretty shitty too, but after that 3 month thing I pretty much got my shit together since it was mostly an aggressive unit and I was the only one there for depression
It feels weird to say it but at least I had Sup Forums once I got back, it was the closest thing I had to contact with other people
and guitar lessons since my mom convinced my stepdad not to sell my guitar

to be fair I screwed him over quite a few times before that
*shove

We will always be there for you user

:(

*hugs*

I can't decide whether I prefer Long Drive or Lonesome Crowded West. Every time I listen to Long Drive, I'm sure that it is the best. It's varied; it's noisy; it captures that isolated feeling of a long, solitary drive so well. But then I listen to LCW, and it's crazy how many tracks on it are among my absolute favorites of '90s guitar bands. The unifying western motif is also incredible, and it has some of the best closing jams of all time on numerous songs.

>I don't feel and I feel great
>I sold my atlas by the freight stairs
>I do lines and I crossed roads
>I crossed the lines of all the great state roads

Mainly the first line and the way Isaac says it. Easily my fav Modest Mouse track.

Wow wtf is wrong with you?

I love Long Drive, but I wouldn't call it varied, especially compared to their other albums.

How do you feel about Tundra/Desert? It had the line
>I don't feel and that feels fine

Honestly, it might be one of my favorite Modest Mouse tunes.

Nice analysis friend that's prey good.

Such a quotable line. That whole song is so damn fun, like one little light of escapism in the void of depression that is LCW. Lounge Closing Time is the same way.

>tfw this was literally the last song I sent her before that happened just in case something went wrong
youtube.com/watch?v=e9uiugG20MU
not Modest Mouse related in any context besides that MAYBE a few of their earlier songs could be considered emo
On a cool note, I literally got a nu-metal fan (Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park, were just a few among the shitty bands he liked) into Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth

My ex got me to finally give Modest Mouse a chance. We used to sit in my room and drink shitty gin and listen to Modest Mouse albums every Friday night. It puts the band in this weird space in my mind of wanting to listen to all the time, but being kind of painful to listen to.

Lots
>depression
>bipolar type II
>anxiety
>attachment problems

avclub.com/article/modest-mouses-isaac-brock-fell-asleep-wheel-and-ca-240628

This could have been a eulogy thread. Mofo fell asleep at the wheel and drove into a truck. Like 3 weeks ago.

obviously he should have taken his meth.

>Sometimes all I really want to feel is loved
>Sometimes I'm angry that I feel too angry
>Sometimes my feelings get in the way
>Of what I really feel I needed to say

Too many feels.

You realize you won't keep her, right?

Yes that's exactly why I love it so much, you first see Cowboy Dan as a really angry person but in that part you actually understand why he is

That's a fair point. I do think it varies things a lot, but less obviously. There's no Styrofoam Boots or Wild Pack of Family Dogs, but the songs manage to all bring something different within a pretty similar framework. For instance, there's no glaring reused ideas like Heart Cooks Brain and Out Of Gas.

I don't know man
It's been like 4 years and if all that shit didn't fuck it up I don't know what will

Both are probably my two all time favorite albums, couldn't say which one I like more

I have depression and anxiety. Sucks desu
